We filmed our test in 2022 (the video went up in November 2022). We haven’t re-tested our picks since, but we re-checked all four on October 11, 2026:
- Pocket Poopers and the hydrant are still sold on their makers’ own sites, and both were in stock. Zapücci and MalsiPree are only sold through online marketplaces now, so we don’t show prices for them.
- Prices: Pocket Poopers is still $35. The hydrant dispenser went from the $4.89 in our video to $5.99, and it now comes with a 15-bag roll.
- Corrected: we updated the Pocket Poopers leather description and link, removed an outdated “US Patent Pending” claim from the hydrant, and fixed a typo at the top of this page.
Other options worth knowing about (NOT tested by us): we haven’t tested these, so they’re not in our rankings.

- Wilderdog Dog Poop Bag Holder — a fabric holder with two mini carabiners, one on each end, so it sits snug against the leash instead of dangling, and a rubber-reinforced dispensing hole. It weighs 0.9 oz and holds one standard roll (bags sold separately). $9 on Wilderdog’s site, in 5 colors.
- Ruffwear Stash Bag Mini — a soft, quiet holder with two attachment points, a zippered roll compartment, a side dispensing opening, a cinch loop for carrying a used bag and a stretch mesh pocket for a spare bag or key fob. Comes with a 15-bag roll. $24.99 on Ruffwear’s site.
Owner feedback
We searched Reddit for owners talking about poop bag holders. We didn’t find posts that name our four picks, so here’s what owners say about the main types. We left out posts that read like ads.
Hard plastic cases
- One owner said hard plastic holders eventually crack, and before that, the noise they make every time they hit the floor gets annoying (r/BuyItForLife, Aug 2025). Another had plastic holders whose clasp broke and whose bottom cap kept falling off (comment), the same weak spot we noted on the hydrant.
- On the other hand, an owner said a fire hydrant dispenser seems to be the most durable: they’ve gone through 3 in 20 years (r/Dogowners, Aug 2026).
Zippered fabric pouches
- An owner who prefers zippered cloth holders said plastic ones would randomly pop open and leave a trail of bags behind them (r/Dogowners, Aug 2026). Fabric isn’t perfect either: one owner has had fabric holders tear at the seams (r/BuyItForLife), and another said rubbery ones eventually tear, while their metal one won’t break but is hard to load when the dog is pulling (r/Dogowners).
Clips, Velcro and swinging
- Clip-on holders that swing around, catch on things or fall off were a common complaint (r/BuyItForLife). An owner walking two large dogs said anything swinging from the leash gets in the way, so they keep bags in a pocket or tied to the handle (r/Dogowners).
- Two owners had problems with Velcro straps: one replaced theirs with sturdier straps (r/Dogowners), and a dog walker called the straps on theirs “garbage” (r/RoverPetSitting, Aug 2026).
Carrying used bags
- A pet sitter uses a dispenser with a hook for the used bag on every dog’s leash (r/RoverPetSitting, Sep 2026). Another uses a hard canister that clips to the leash: it keeps hands free and contains the smell when closed, though the smell lingers inside, so they air it out after walks (comment).

How to choose a poop bag holder
Poop bags are an essential item for dog owners. Unless you are on your own property it is usually a legal requirement to pick up after your dog. Some places such as apartment complexes or neighborhoods may even DNA check your dog so those culprits who don’t handle this task can be easily pinpointed and slapped with a hefty fine. Legal requirements aside, it’s good practice to pick up dog waste as it’s one of the leading causes of pollution at dog parks, lakes, and streams where people like to walk their dogs.
How To Choose:
Consider where you’d like to have your bags. Would it be easier to have the dispenser hooked to your leash? If your dog is an energetic walker and a dangling item off his leash would get in your way or become obnoxious, consider one that can hook on or be carried in your purse, crossbody bag or on belt loop. Some owners choose to put a pack on their dog or loop their bag holder on his harness so he can carry his own supplies.
If you are walking with more than one dog, convenience will be essential as you may end up completing your task with one hand. In this case you’ll want a dispenser that you can quickly grab a bag from without too much fuss.
Our last category is for holding a poop bag after it’s been used. If you don’t want to have to carry the bag yourself these convenient holders will do the dirty work for you.

Of the more than 20 holders we tested, the Pocket Poopers leather holder from The Golden Dog Co. was our favorite: it’s handmade, stylish and clips to a leash, keys or purse, for $35. If you want something cheap with a hook for a used bag, The Original Poop Bags hydrant dispenser is $5.99 and comes with 15 bags.
What is the best poop bag dispenser for a leash?
Look for one that attaches at two points or with a snug strap, so it doesn’t swing around or slide down the leash. Of our picks, the hydrant’s soft Velcro strap stayed put best; the Zapücci flopped around even with its clip and Velcro. If you walk two big dogs, many owners skip the dispenser and keep bags in a pocket.
Is a hard case or a fabric pouch better?
Hard cases protect the roll and often have a hook for a used bag, but they can be bulky, noisy and crack over time. Fabric and leather pouches are quieter and lighter, but cheap fabric can tear at the seams. A zipper keeps the roll from falling out either way.
How do I carry a used poop bag on a walk?
Pick a dispenser with a hook or loop for a tied bag, like the hydrant we tested, or add a separate clip-on carrier or canister. A closed hard canister holds in the smell until you reach a trash can.
Are there personalized dog poop bag holders?
