Best Pooper Scooper for Dogs

Best Pooper Scooper for Dogs

The reality of owning a dog is that they poop a lot, with the average dog going multiple times a day. Most dog owners can agree that one of the more unpleasant tasks of caring for your four-legged family member is picking up this waste and disposing of it. Not doing so could potentially be breaking the law, particularly if you don’t own your own land. A good pooper scooper can make this task fast and easy.

In theory, this design is effective and versatile, ideal for multiple kinds of landscaping. Unfortunately, it’s all cheap plastic that wears out quickly and the screw-together handle on the bucket and rake are weak points. We like the idea of the rake functioning as either a rake or a scoop but it’s a little flimsy and can be frustrating if the dog waste rolls from one side of the rake to another. The bucket has a lip inside to hold dog waste in but makes it difficult to load the bucket and requires a little more effort to deposit the dog waste during scooping.

This product would be adequate for smaller dog breeds and smaller piles of dog waste but will not hold up well to excessive use. Its weakness is the plastic material in its construction. The handles easily become unscrewed and so does the rake at the bottom, and this can become most inconvenient while you are in the middle of scooping. We do like that this product can be used with plastic shopping bags because the manufacturer’s scented bags are stinky and expensive.

This is a functional design. The bin has a flat straight edge making it easier to collect dog waste. Unfortunately, you sacrifice durability for the lightweight construction. The handle is sturdy, but the aluminum bin and rake and the hardware used is all rather flimsy. The bin is 6.5″ wide, 6.5″ deep so it may not hold very much if you are on poop patrol cleaning multiple dog messes.

This is a standard design for a jaw-style scooper with a decent-sized scoop allowing multiple pick-ups and a decent handle with a good length.  Unfortunately, the plastic materials in its construction are its weak points.  It does not hold up well over time, especially if left outdoors or in cooler weather. The squeezing mechanism on the handle may be difficult for some users to grip. The springs on it are cheap and break easily. For the price, we’d like to see better materials.

Our Review

The metal used in this rake-and-bin style scooper is excellent and we love that it’s sturdy but there are design flaws such as weak welds holding the bin to the handle and cheap locking mechanisms on the telescoping handle. Unfortunately the bin often just snaps completely off as the loop that holds the handle in place is not affixed in place with bolts or screws, just a weak weld. The powder coating makes the metal rust resistant but unfortunately, the texture is difficult to clean when there is dried dog waste buildup on it.

We like the all-metal construction of this scooper and the generous size of the bin for collecting dog waste. The handle is longer than most, making this easier to use. The metal bin and spade are easy to keep clean. The riveted look is actually just punched/stamped metal holding the two components together rather than being bolted or screwed in place so the bin may pop off the handle. A drilled hole and a few extra pieces of hardware are recommended to reinforce it.

This is a great 3-piece rake-and-bin set made of good materials. We absolutely love that this comes with both a spade and rake. Not all poop-scooping scenarios will work with a rake or a spade and it’s nice to have both on hand. These handles go together easily but have plastic joints which may weaken over time. The steel is sturdy and solid and the rivets holding everything together are nice. Versatile, easy to use, and with handles long enough to actually spare you from having to stoop to the ground each time you need to clean up waste, this is an outstanding value.

We really wanted to like this design and for some dog owners it may be a good solution. We just don’t like the idea of a tube getting full of messy dog waste and how difficult it may be to clean it if the waste traveling through it was too soft to make it to the attached bag. You’ll spend time having to clean it after every use. This could be really smelly in a warmer climate. The idea of the bag coming loose during the process of shaking the dog waste through the tube and into the bag is a horrifying one.

We love all the thoughtful features built into this jaw-style pooper scooper such as the trigger-style mechanism (requires less squeezing than the big grip style scoopers), the onboard poop bag storage and a flashlight. The teeth on the jaws are longer but once you have the bag in place you will still have similar issues that scoopers with short teeth have when scooping in taller grass or rough surfaces like gravel. You will have to use a bag with this scooper or dog waste will fall out of the jaws so it’s not as environmentally friendly.

Our Review

This rake-and-bin style scooper is basically a circular loop or blade with a bag looped around it to catch dog waste as it passes through the loop. We recommend getting the Clean Scoop set version of this scooper (includes a spade) as it can be difficult to get poop into the bag without something to guide it in with. This is an excellent product to hold under your dog while he is squatting if you can train him to allow it. The handles are comfortable to grip but the telescoping handle may weaken over time.

These are basically a recycled paper barf bag with chopsticks that hold it open like a tent while you use a cardboard cone to push the dog waste into the bag which could hold about half of an 18 oz bottle of water. For travel, short trips, walks, smaller dogs, smaller messes and fewer clean-ups these could be an environmentally friendly solution but we don’t think they’re practical for around the yard or property. We’re not terribly fond of assembly-required poop-scooping each and every time.

This jaw-style scooper is basically an extension of your hand. You cover it with the bag and scoop the dog waste into the reservoir which expands. As long as it doesn’t get dirty this is a great solution because it is small and compact and can be hooked on the dog’s leash or harness for walks. It’s probably not very practical for larger scale poop patrol but for walks and travel it’s a great solution.

Another environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic bags and solutions that break, the classic garden shovel is always a great option for clearing your dog’s land mines from a yard or property quickly when coupled with a good sturdy waste bin. These shovels can sit out in all weather and do not require assembly or extensive set-up.They are a little heavier than the cheaper aluminum and plastic options but will likely be around for years to come.

This is an old-fashioned handmade tool that is ideal for combing through grass to pick up every last bit of dog waste. We love the design and the long handle but do wish it were stained or finished a little differently. We would probably wrap the handle. The tines are welded on, are solid and hold up well. You cannot pick up multiple piles at once with it as the forked head is 6″ across but it does help with picking up the smaller, looser waste.

How to Choose:

Dog waste can carry diseases and is one of the main sources of contamination for natural water sources such as lakes and streams. If your dog has free run of your property or yard then you know it can be a lot of work to pick up all the land mines before the lawnmower or your shoe does. Luckily, there are many options out there for just about every scenario.

Consider where and how often you will be using this tool. Do you need something compact you can take on a walk or to the dog park or is this a tool you’ll primarily be using on your own property, where portability is not a concern? Do you need a scooper that will make it easy to clean up waste without bending down or would one of the models without a long handle work for you? Some dog owners are unable to reach the ground easily due to injury or other conditions and therefore a longer handle will make it easier to scoop. Some of the jaw-style scoopers require gripping a handle or trigger to open and close the scooper and this may prove difficult for those with a limited range of motion or strength in their hands.

The cost and environmental impact of your clean-up method and materials are also considerations when choosing a good scooper. Many of the models on the market rely on the use of plastic bags to avoid contact with dog waste. Unfortunately, many of these will necessitate a bag for each pile of waste being scooped. The best scoopers that rely on bags for waste collection will allow multiple uses.

We’ve narrowed our reviews into two categories for the best pooper scoopers:

Rake & Bin style: Two-piece scooper usually including a bin/tray and rake/shovel component

  • Not as portable
  • Better for cleaning up more than one pile
  • Not as destructive to grass and landscaping

Jaw-style: A one-piece scooper usually comprised of two hinged pieces that scoop waste

  • Typically more portable than two-piece scoopers
  • Often rely on the use of bags to keep waste out of hinge mechanisms
  • May be more difficult to clean

Shovel-Style: A good old-fashioned solution to the problem that is pretty fail-safe

  • May be more difficult to use for mobility-challenged dog owners
  • Not very portable
  • Best for home use

While a pooper scooper can eliminate the need to use a bag to pick up poop with your hand, it’s important to remember that most scoopers will still need to be cleaned particularly if they malfunction or jam. The appeal for many of using pooper scoopers is that you will not use as many plastic bags, which are not always an environmentally friendly choice. However, for occasions where you would use a single bag anyway on walks or at the dog park, a scooper that relies on the use of bags merely makes it possible for you to scoop dog waste without using your hand but will not cut down on the use of bags. A rake-and-bin style scooper can be used to clean up multiple messes with one bag or without one altogether.

Rake-and-bin style scoopers may not be as portable or lightweight as the jaw-style scoopers but they are often more durable, often made with steel and wood handles, resembling garden tools. These also tend to be easier on your landscape as you have more control over how much turf or grass is being scooped up along with the dog waste.

Our favorite solution for dog poop continues to be (and has been for over a decade) the classic garden shovel. We find the trench style or a transfer style to be the best type, as these usually have a ridge or hollow area that will keep your dog’s droppings from rolling off the shovel. Cleaning up your property? Here’s how we do it: Get an outside trash bin, a contractor grade trash bag to line it with, and take it around your yard with you so it’s handy and all you have to do is shovel it right in.
