Best Indestructible Dog Toy

Dogs are born with a built-in desire to chew stemming from the pack animals they are descended from who chewed raw bones and tissue– it’s in their DNA, and they need to chew. Chewing offers mental stimulation (dogs get bored, just like people do), plus it keeps their strong jaws in shape.  Dogs that don’t have the opportunity to chew will suffer longer-term health problems and lose their teeth much earlier in life. Look at chewing as exercise – dogs feel better when they do it and are less likely to tackle your furniture and other inappropriate items. The right toy can help keep a dog’s teeth in good shape, too.

We’ve done the legwork and chosen 20 of the best chew toys for aggressive chewers so you can spend less time searching and more time playing with your dog.  Our number 1 favorite? The KONG Extreme Dog Toy. It floats, it bounces, it holds treats and it’s virtually indestructible.

Our Review

KONG set the industry standard for durable dog toys, and while no toy is completely indestructible, the KONG Extreme Dog Toy is one of the toys that approaches that standard. Its texture provides a satisfying chew experience, and stuffing it with treats extends playtime. Dogs who like to lick things will enjoy that one opening is large enough for them to lick the inside of this toy and a small hole on the other end keeps their tongue from getting stuck with suction. Freezing the treats inside extends playtime even further. This toy is recommended by vets and canine professionals worldwide. KONG toys can be found in various sizes for all stages of a dog’s life but these black ones are our favorites when it comes to durability.

Most dogs do well with the large size.

Our Review

Elk antlers are about the most durable chew toy on the market.  They’re rock solid and full of vitamins and minerals, including phosphorus, glucosamine, and chondroitin. Plus they’re a sustainable resource and require no processing other than cutting and slight sanding. Some are left whole, others are split to expose the healthy bone marrow which dogs love.  They do have an odor but it’s not quite as pungent as the water buffalo horns we also recommend (reviewed further below).

These antler pieces may splinter and we chose not to give our dogs all of the pieces included with the assortment, we threw a few away. As with all chew toys, supervision is necessary.

Our Review

Our dogs went to this bone right away. The textures are appealing to them and it’s easy for them to hang onto while chewing. The smaller size is best for dogs under 12 lbs as it really is rather small. The large size may not work for big dogs over 50 lbs. Once the ends are ground down, the toy may not be as appealing to them. While most dogs love them, and ours will happily grind away with a faraway look on her face, Nylabones this hard can be hard on a dog’s teeth if used exclusively so we like to switch it out with softer chew toys and limit usage as needed.

Our Review

Good for long chew sessions, the West Paw Zogoflex Hurley Durable Dog Bone is non-toxic, BPA- and Phthalate-free, and FDA compliant, which means it’s safe if your dog accidentally ingests a small piece. It’s available in 4 easy-to-find colors and makes a perfect fetch stick, in or out of water. It’s a great toy to take with your canine companion to the lake or the pool. When it does break down, it eventually comes apart in smaller chunks, which you won’t want your dog eating but aren’t as dangerous as splinters.

Our Review

For a dog toy, the West Paw Zogoflex Awizl Puzzle Treat Chew Toy carries a higher price tag, but with good reason: not only is it a fun chew toy for pups, but the play is enhanced by the addition of treats.  And what dog doesn’t love treats? This mentally-stimulating puzzle toy keeps pups occupied for hours trying to work your choice of treats out of it. A little peanut butter inside will hold various sizes of treats, and when play time’s over, this earth-friendly, recyclable toy can be popped in the dishwasher. We don’t recommend bully sticks though as it will encourage the dog to destroy the ends of this toy.

Our Review

Playology’s new durable chew toys for dogs are some of our favorites as they have lasted longer than most and the scent/flavor keeps our pups entertained. Our pup happily field-tested these, and the winning flavor was the peanut butter (blue). These toys do have a fairly strong odor when being worked on but it’s not intolerable, and it seems to extend the time our dogs spend chewing on them. The Playology line has several shapes but the Chew Stick was the one our dogs reached for the most. They are easy for both large and small dogs to get a grip on, carry around, and even play a game of tug with. When these chew toys do begin to break down, they come apart in chunks. However, they don’t crumble the way some toys do and getting the chunks out of a toy takes a little more work. For dogs that don’t pull chunks out, we got a good solid 3 weeks out of this one, but the dog who likes to pull tiny bits out at a time was able to make a dent in it within a week (the edges shown below are his handiwork). The company does honor their guarantee. Below is our latest Playology chew stick after about 2 months.

If your dog is getting bored with the same old toys, enter the Turkey Leg. This one doesn’t have as many weird nubs and pieces to break off, but its size, flavor and shape is appealing to most dogs. The larger end is super heavy making it easier for a dog to hold in place while chewing, but the smaller end does get down worn faster this way. Regardless, it’s a favorite with our dogs and lasts a long time. Nylabones this hard can be hard on a dog’s teeth if used exclusively so we like to switch it out with softer chew toys and limit usage as needed.  While this might be best for mid to larger-sized dogs, our small dog was intrigued with this one and steals it every chance he gets.

The Goughnut pro series is meant for the power chewer, the dog who terminates everything else. It may be just what your tough-guy junkyard dog is looking for. Marked with the yellow dot to indicate the Pro series, these come in sizes big enough even for a big Great Dane. We like that these have a safety indicator (red core) to indicate when the toy has been chewed to the point where it needs replacement. Some dogs lose interest in these. We’re not sure if it’s because they don’t have tons of nubs and things that can be torn off or no flavor, but those of us who have spent hundreds of dollars on chew toys like to think we’re entitled to a victory lap.

Our Review

Water buffalo horns are some of our dogs’ favorites. We like that they are a natural chew toy and how well they clean our dogs’ teeth without wearing them down as some hard chew toys do. Our dogs come back to these frequently and they spend a lot of time chewing them. They take much longer to wear down, even our power chewer takes about 10 days of constant use to wear them down. What we don’t like about the horn chews is the odor. The dogs don’t mind but it can be a little pungent. And lastly, we have returned/exchanged a few horns. The base/opening around where the horn is cut should be very thick (1/4 inch or more) or it may splinter quickly.

This is a good, basic stick toy that aggressive chewers enjoy. It’s not hard enough for extended chew sessions to run the risk of wearing down your dog’s teeth, but the texture is soft enough to be satisfying.  The rubber-type material is non-toxic, BPA and phthalate-free, and the soft nature allows for energetic chewing while keeping teeth and gums clean and safe. Doubles as a fetch toy.

This toy comes in a variety of shapes and flavors with one sure to please your pup. Due to the hard nature of this toy, it should not be given to breeds with pre-existing dental problems as chewing on it could cause tooth breakage. We do feel it helps with stinky breath but only as long as the dog is chewing on it. Both of the two dogs who tried this one didn’t seem to like the smell and soon lost interest.

Our Review

The Jolly Pets Romp-n-Roll Ball is a popular choice for dogs. It’s great for throwing, tossing, fetching, and tug-of-war. Dogs love to whip this one around by the rope, but owner beware if he lets go – the hard rubber can hurt if you’re caught in the crossfire. For this reason, it’s more suited to outdoor play. And the rope won’t last long with a power chewer working this toy, so while there’s play value there, if your dog immediately shreds rope this one may not be worth it. Still, this is a versatile toy. It can sustain plenty of bite marks as it doesn’t deflate when punctured.  Truly a versatile, durable toy.

Softer than a Frisbee, the Kong-Flyer is much easier on a dog’s mouth when playing catch.  It’s also easier for the pup to retrieve from the ground than the hard plastic saucers and won’t shatter into sharp pieces like a plastic one will. Made from non-toxic BPA- and Phthalate-free materials, this FDA-approved ball beats the socks off of tennis balls for robust dog play. Not too hard, not too squishy soft, the Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Diamond Plate Orbee Ball has just the right squeezability for your dog. It’s hollow, yet durable, which gives a pup’s jaws a good workout. It didn’t last long though with our power-chewer who began pulling chunks off within the  hour.

The Zogoflex Tux Interactive Treat Dispensing Dog Chew Toy has a lot of play value and can be stuffed with treats! Our dog made short work of anything inside it that wasn’t frozen in place and began immediately shredding the thinner edges between the circular elements of this toy. We love Westpaw toys because they are BPA- and Phthalate-free, non-toxic and FDA compliant. Dishwasher safe and recyclable, this is a responsible, earth-friendly pet toy that’s fun for pups and parents alike. It’s a favorite toy but once they get bored with it, they begin shredding it.

This earth-friendly “ball” was designed to bounce erratically, keeping your dog entertained while trying to catch it it mid-air. Only “mid-air” keeps changing! Veterinarian-approved, it’s made with sustainable natural rubber, giving your power chewer a gum massage and jaw workout at the same time. FDA-compliant, non-toxic and biodegradable, this stimulating chew toy is good for light chewers, but power chewers tend to make short work of it.

More durable than a tennis ball, the West Paw Zogoflex Air Boz (rhymes with “nose”) is soft enough for dogs to catch mid-flight and will stand up to many games of fetch… but not aggressive chewing sessions. This ball is perfect for water play and bounces higher than most balls for greater play value. The small size fits in standard ball throwers. These balls are air-injected for a more satisfying “squish” and are perfect for dogs with high play drives- that ridiculous bounce will send them running!

KONG is a brand known for its dog toys, and this one is no exception.  The KONG Jumbler Disk Dog Toy is a 2-in-1 ball toy which should satisfy dogs who like to fetch and dogs who like to chew squeaky toys.  There is a tennis ball in the center compartment which provides movement and visual interest for your pup. The loud squeak, plus the handles on all sides, entice rousing games of fetch.  Dogs who love squeaky toys should enjoy this one- but be warned, the tennis ball may entice your power chewer to destroy the toy to get to it. Ours easily removed the tennis ball and abandoned the actual toy.

How to “Chews” Dog-approved Toys

Dogs are not always picky about what they chew. A pair of designer shoes, the living room sofa, the tv remote control… all are fair game when the chewing instinct strikes. So it makes sense to have some chew toys on hand for your canine companion. But how do you choose?

The fact is no dog toy on earth is truly “indestructible,” but there are many toys that can last much longer than the standard 5-minute snack for aggressive chewers. Because that is how long typical discount store toys last – anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or two. After a trip to the trash can, you’ll be right back where you started.

The best toys are multipurpose. These toys satisfy the chewing instinct, but they’re also fun to play with, both with or without their humans. Dog toys that store treats inside provide mental stimulation while toys that bounce provide a fun game of chase. And if the toy floats, even better for dogs that like water.

The first thing you need to do is determine your dog’s chew and play style. Some dogs are fetchers, others are go for the gusto chewers who love nothing more than to rip their toys to shreds.

Before you start searching for toys to suit your dog’s nature…

Safety First

Safety is of the utmost importance when selecting chew toys for your precious pup. The best and longest lasting chew toys on the market are made with hard rubber. These are the toys that will prove most resistant to the beating an aggressive chewer can dish out. The last thing you want is a cheap toy coming apart and getting lodged either in your dog’s trachea or intestines.

However, if that should happen (and it can, even on the toys labeled “indestructible”), the second feature you should look for is whether the toy is non-toxic. The fact that a chew toy spends so much time in a dog’s mouth makes the toxicity of the toy much more important. And if small bits pass through the intestinal tract, it’s even more important that the pieces are non-toxic.

Another point is whether the toys contains a squeaker. If dislodged from the toy, the squeaker could pose a serious choking threat to your dog.

Rope toys can be extremely dangerous if your dog chews them unattended. We’ve seen $6,000 vet bills to remove these from digestive tracts, and even the chewed-off pieces of rope can bind up a dog’s intestines.

Plush toys are not going to be suitable for your dog’s aggressive chewing. Most dogs enjoy disemboweling anything with stuffing whether it’s a plush toy (especially if there is a squeaker inside), a dog bed, or sometimes, your couch. The stuffing in most plushies is dangerous and can cause health problems for the unlucky dog who ingests it.

Think about your dog’s chewing style. If he’s/she’s a very aggressive chewer, you want a toy with a little “give” to it to not risk breaking your pup’s teeth. It can happen when the wrong toy is matched with the wrong dog.

When a toy is damaged, or when it’s been chewed down to a size that can be swallowed, toss it and get a new one. Keep one in a safe place as a back-up.

Quality

You may experience sticker shock when shopping for chew toys for your furry friend, but there’s a reason for the expense. Better quality toys are going to cost more. Period. But on the flip side, better quality toys will last longer, too. You may be new to the struggle- spend $3 on a toy that might last 5 minutes to an hour, and then you have to buy another. And another. Or you could spend $15 on a toy that will last months. Which is the more cost-effective toy?

It makes sense to spend a little more on a toy that will last longer because these are the toys that are also safer. We recommend toys that are manufactured in the US with known standards and quality controls in place.

Durability

The most durable types of dog toys for aggressive chewers on the market are hard rubber, as mentioned earlier. These are the toys that can really take the heat when your dog’s boredom, separation anxiety or teething distress take hold.

Kong, Westpaw, Nylabone, and Playology make a wide variety of hard rubber/nylon styles to suit your dog’s chewing and play styles.
