We love this dog bed even though its austere appearance makes us think of a prison. These beds are preferred by dog shelters, boarding facilities, and veterinary clinics. The edges of the vinyl or fabric part of this bed are concealed inside the frame, making it difficult for the dog to find an edge to begin chewing on. The downside of the durability of this bed is that it is not as comfortable as a pillow, nest, or bolster bed. This is the bed to buy when you run out of patience with softer beds. If your heart softens, Kuranda does make a reversible fleece pad with straps allowing you to anchor it to this bed but it is not rated chew proof.

- What we Like
- No exposed closures such as zippers
- Channeled interior to keep bed fluffed up
- Cover can be removed and washed
- What we Dislike
- Rated chew-resistant, not chew-proof
- Bed has a seam that can be frayed
- Material is not very strong or ripstop
- Bed may go flat over time

COLOR CHOICES | 2 |
This bed has “hidden closures” that are Velcro and easily found by even a marginally curious dog. The denier fabric is easily torn, chewed, and slashed. The filling in this bed does not look safe for a dog to eat- unfortunately, a bed that can be easily destroyed should contain non-toxic fibers. While we like to the corners were little more rounded, there’s still plenty of places for a dog to get hold of and chew this bed wide open.

- What we Like
- Easy to assemble
- Keeps pets cool by allowing airflow
- Indoor/outdoor use
- What we Dislike
- May not be as comfortable as a softer bed

The Coolaroo is a classic among dog owners. We like it for a lot of reasons but for the purpose of this article, it’s a little more chew resistant than a typical upholstered stuffed bed. Dogs who shred beds tend to like to pull the stuffing out or chew a seam, and the rest is history. With these beds, there are still seams but no stuffing, and many dogs really love being a little higher off the ground or floor. In warmer temperatures, this can allow airflow beneath a dog while he’s sleeping.
Because of its tendency to sag in the middle, it may not be ideal for larger dogs over time. The mesh can fray or tear if scratched a lot, but replacement covers are available.

COLOR CHOICES | 3 |
If you’ve ever worn Carhartt workwear, you’re familiar with the tough duck cotton fabric that goes into this dog bed. It’s a tough bed with a sturdy metal zipper hidden under a flap. While no dog bed is indestructible with the right dog chewing on it, this one will stand up to the pawing and ruffling around most dogs do when settling down for a nap. The exterior shell is washable and will stand up to many cycles. The outer shell has been treated to be water-repellent with a dog-safe product. These dog beds come in medium or large.

- Hidden industrial strength zipper
- What we Dislike

- Warranty does not cover destruction of interior materials

We generally like K9 Ballistics products. It comes in great sizes and colors but has a lot of the weaknesses that other similar pillows style beds have. We would consider it more chew-resistant then chew-proof. We like the rounded corners, but it did seem a little lumpy and that might incite a dog to investigate further with his jaws. This one would be good for a dog that tends to like to ruffle or rearrange his bedding rather than for a power chewer.

- What we Like
- Mesh panel allows lots of air circulation
- Non-skid rubber feet
- Tool-free assembly
- Indoor/outdoor use
- Additional accessories such as canopy available
- What we Dislike
- Bed tends to fray and sag and come apart where the denier and mesh fabric meet
- Plastic can be chewed

COLOR CHOICES | 2 |
This is a great bed for small to medium sized dogs. It does have some weak points. The seam between the mesh and the denier fabric can fray and come apart and the bed may sag with use over time with a heavier or larger dog. While it clearly states this bed is good up to 150 pounds we would recommend a dog over hundred and 10 for use with this bed. The plastic frame can also be chewed, and the mesh and corners may snag a paw. Overall it’s a solid little bed, ideal for camping or outdoor use. We like the cooling effect of the mesh. It’s just not indestructible and a power chewer could easily take this one down.

- What we Like
- Sturdy, tough nylon fabric

- Non-toxic polyfill
- What we Dislike

This is a great bed for dogs who like to nest, scratch, and push their beds around. Like most beds with soft filling, it is irresistible to a power chewer, and this bed should not be used with a repeat offender unsupervised as it will not survive. It is not indestructible. We like that the bolster is high and the thickness of the bed is promising. It’s more likely that the bed will get chewed up than go flat. We like that K9 ballistics uses non-toxic poly fill and other materials in the event that your dog does eat the bed.

COLOR CHOICES | 3 |
We love these beds for the comfort factor, the quality materials and the upgrades to the newer style of material. While the flap that covers the zipper looks like prime chewing real estate, it looks pretty difficult for a dog to destroy. As with most pillow beds, there is always a possibility a dog will want to destroy it if it is soft and has stuffing inside of it, so it may not be considered indestructible. We think the snug fit of the cover over the matteress and filling will make it less appealing to chewers. The velvet bonding on the ripstop nylon makes this a much cozier and less noisy bed but it may not breathe as much in the summer.

- What we Like
- Cover can be removed
- Deep bolsters for dogs that like to nest
- What we Dislike
- Multiple weak points
- Recycled polyfill is not nontoxic
- Easily destroyed
- Goes flat quickly

TYPE OF BED | Bolster-style |
MATERIAL |
1200 Denier polyester recycled polyester filling |
SIZE | 19 x 26 x 8 inches |
COLOR CHOICES | 1 |
Some dogs just absolutely love these deep bolstered beds but we doubt this one would even stand up to a gently scratching nesting dog over time, and all the seams and ridges on this bed are going to be easy for a power chewer to come in and terminate this bed. No baffling or other reinforcement on the padding on the bottom of the bed, so it will likely flatten out in no time at all as the stuffing all shifts. Recycled stuffing is not safe for dogs who may end up ingesting it.

- 100 day chew proof warranty
- Will not flatten
- What we Dislike

These have to be some of the best quality dog beds on the market using triple stitch seams, and orthopedic PUR foam for our dogs who may chew open the bed and eat it. This alone is quite a bit of peace of mind, but their unconditional 125 day chew-proof guarantee really is the icing on the cake. These are easy to clean and the enclosure for the velcro closures is convenient.

- What we Like
- Base layer is orthopedic memory foam, not cheap egg crate
- Non-skid bottom

- What we Dislike
- Lots of seams, trim, and edges to chew
- Weak zippers
- Lining is not waterproof

We absolutely love this bed for dogs who are not power chewers and it’s one of the top-sellers on Amazon. Premium foam, easy to disassemble and the ability to wash items separately when needed, deep, firm bolsters… it’s a perfect bed. Unfortunately for dogs who like to dig, chew, and scratch, this bed’s days will be numbered. It is pricier so consider carefully if your dog might want to chew it up. We think that because it is well designed with the cover fitting snugly it may not be as attractive to chewers as pillow-style beds with loose filling, but supervise your dog closely to be sure.

- What we Like
- Affordable
- Exterior unzips for cleaning
- What we Dislike
- Recycled polyfill can be toxic
- Lots of edges and seams
- Weak zipper

COLOR CHOICES | 1 |
This is a very cheap pillow bed with no baffling to keep the filling in place. Recycled filling in a cheap dog bed can be dangerous. This bed also features piping which while adding a bit of flair to the human eye, is an irresistible element to chew and shred. The zipper is not hidden and also a weak point. Not a bed for chewers or scratchers.

This is another really good pillow-style bed. We love the kevlar reinforced seams but wish the piping along the edges wasn’t there as it does invite dogs who love to chew to sample it. CertiPUR foam makes this safe even if your dog is successful at chewing through the cover for peace of mind in the event it was ingested. The hypoallergenic and waterproof construction makes it easy to keep clean and less stinky.

We are reviewing the versions of this bed with the nylon cover, not the soft velvety/fleece cover. There are quite a few cover options for it. This may not be the most durable dog bed but the nylon cover won’t be as easy to chew up as the soft fleece and it can be replaced if your dog chews a corner off. The brightly colored trim may be a weak spot or a focal point that would attract a chewer and a dog who likes to ruffle and claw at his bed as he settles down for a nap may be able to tear the cover easily.
We do like that there is an inner lining to help repel accidents and stains in addition to the outside cover and that you can order replacements, but these can be expensive. Our dog loves how soft the bed is on her middle-aged doggy joints and she sleeps deeply on this one.

How to Choose an Indestructible Dog Bed
Owners of power-chewing dogs know the struggle. After the first suspenseful few seconds that it took you to realize what the stuffing all.over.the.house was, you realize your dog ate his bed- again! While exercise, mental stimulation and playtime is important to keep your dog from indulging in destructive behaviors, the reality is that some dogs just love chewing, digging and gnawing, even on their favorite things. We’ve looked at what’s on the market for these chew-happy dogs and reviewed our favorites.
Even if your dog doesn’t chew on beds for fun, some dogs just like to dig, ruffle, or claw at their bed as they settle in for a nap. This “nesting” is a natural behavior but it can be hard on a bed. Depending on how destructive your dog is, you may want to go as industrial strength as the aircraft-grade aluminum and ballistic nylon Kuranda Dog Bed, or maybe just a sturdier tougher bed such as the Tough Chew by Orvis bed may suffice. Consider if your dog needs orthopedic support when sleeping at night. You may need to purchase an indestructible dog bed cover that could help you reinforce a dog bed that offers more support. Larger and elderly dogs generally need more support and a firmer bed.
We’ve narrowed our reviews into several categories for indestructible dog beds:
Cot-Style Bed: Off the ground with a raised fabric surface to keep the dog off the ground.
- These are what you’ll often find in boarding facilities or veterinary clinics because they are meant to hold up to a lot of abuse.
- Not always the most comfortable, they do not yield to nesting dogs wanting to rearrange it.
- Typically made from metal, PVC, and nylon
Reinforced Pillow Style Bed: A tough outer material, stuffed with filling, a mat, or a layer of foam.
- Outer layer made from rip-stop nylon or similar material
- Can go flat over time
- Not all beds will have a washable outer layer but most do. The inside of these beds can harbor allergens and dirt and cannot be washed.
- Much softer than the cot style.
Bolster Style Bed: Similar to the pillow bed, but with raised edges or a nest-style
- Most dogs love the security of a bolster and will snuggle up against the walls
- More surfaces, seams, and edges for the dog to chew on
- Not all beds will have a washable outer layer but most do. The inside of these beds can harbor allergens and dirt and cannot be washed.
- Most comfortable and soothing for most dogs
Reinforced pillow and bolster-style dog beds often have removable covers (with zipper closure), square edges, decorative edging, and other weak points in their construction.
Your dog should be able to comfortably sprawl out on the dog bed. A lot of dogs will initially fall asleep curled up in a ball but like humans, and then splay their legs out when deeply asleep. Be sure the bed is big enough to accommodate your dog in all his favorite sleep positions. If you have dogs that like to curl up together consider getting a big enough bed for both to have a little wiggle room in together. Measure your dog from his head to the bottom of his bottom leg when extended. This should be the depth of the bed, and the width should be a few inches bigger than his length (snout to base of tail).
