Our Review

The Embark adventure harness ia great option that really is an all-in-one package. It’s great for small and big dogs alike that offers the owners more control on walks. One of the most impressive things about this harness is the padding, which reduced chafing significantly. The neck opening is adjustable and the buckles for the back are higher up instead of directly behind the dog’s legs. There are still some stiff edges where seams were finished that could chafe, though and for the price we would have liked to see better workmanship.

The Ruffwear Front-Range harness is one of our favorites in terms of quality and adjustability. This is a perfect daily harness with 4 adjustment points and 2 leash attachment points. There is a lot of padding for comfort, well-finished edges, and buckles are not digging and chafing against the dog’s front underleg area. The interior is lined with a soft knit material and the exterior is a ripstop nylon. The back leash attachment point is a nice metal D-ring attached with nylon webbing.

We love so many things about this collar but one thing we really did not like was that the front leash attachment point is a reinforced nylon webbing loop, no hardware. This could potentially tear so honestly we wouldn’t consider it a usable leash attachment point.

We love that the D-ring on the back of this harness is connected to the portion of the harness that wraps around the dog’s waist reducing the amount of strain that would be put around the dog’s neck if the leash was tugged from this connection. This is well built, however, the plastic adjustment points can still potentially be in uncomfortable locations if the harness was completely tightened up for a more slender dog. This is a versatile harness allowing you to tether your dog safely in the car using the front D-ring and still keeping a leash attached to the ring on the back.

This is an excellent budget harness. Though this harness is bulky for smaller dogs, you have room for adjustments with this harness. The buckles sit on top of the harness vs. digging in under the leg, which we like.  The 2 different types of leash attachments offer flexibility to switch between training and casual walks. Some of the finished edges may chafe under a dog’s leg and the mesh webbing is not as well sewn together as other harnesses we’ve looked at. This is functional for casual use and training with smaller dogs, but probably not the best long-term option for an active larger dog who loves to pull.

This is one of the most secure harnesses on the market if you can adjust the harness to be a proper fit, which might take a little practice and work. The second strap on the lower midsection makes it very difficult to escape for dogs who are used to being able to back out of a harness. It’s very well padded with clean edges and seams on the inside for minimal chafing. Though it is very secure, it does not really do much to help discourage pulling, it does offer a good deal of control and support, especially for dogs with special needs or for helping a dog in rough terrain when out exploring.

We love the additional accessories that are available for purchase with this harness including a brush cover for additional belly and chest protection.

PetSafe Easy Walk harness is a true no-pull design that’s good for all shapes and sizes. The front-clip this harness sports does exactly what it should and offers a lot of control. This harness is commonly found in big-box pet stores as well as online. It features single-ply nylon straps that aren’t very securely stitched. This harness could easily come apart if tugged on hard enough. It’s not well-suited for stockier dogs or escape artists.

The JUXZH dog harness is an excellent option in the budget harness range. It has 2 leash attachments but we’d be more inclined to use the D-ring on the back instead of the round ring on the front of the harness. This harness is not well suited for smaller dogs as it is fairly bulky. This harness must be sized and adjusted properly or an escape artist will have no problem wiggling out.

This is definitely a contender for a low-budget harness for bigger dogs. It sports a reinforced stitched back-clip, metal D-ring, and a quick access handle for more control. The neck opening can also be adjusted. This harness is likely to cause chafing to your dog, especially if they like to pull, because of where the hardware is- right behind the armpit. If you need a tough harness that will last and need a handle for control, this one could work but you should be certain it fits the dog properly.

The Puppia Soft harness B design is a great step-in harness for the smaller stocky dogs out there. It’s very easy to put on and you don’t need to worry about any pressure on their neck due to the B shape design. The Pros are very similar to other Puppia harness but so are the cons….Inconsistent sizing issues are what are holding this harness back. Buyer beware but if you do get one that fits your dog perfectly, then you have an excellent harness to use for a long time.

We have concerns about the safety of this harness. It is soft- a scuba-like material with few edges to rub or chafe. Beyond that- the front closes with velcro, and this cannot be easily adjusted. It will gap open on some dogs and be ill-fitting for others. We’re thinking this one is best for very small dogs. Anything bigger could tear it apart.  The leash attachment point on this harness is barely stitched in. While it may be more difficult for a small dog to wiggle out of this harness we don’t feel that it would be safe for a dog that pulls or jerks on the leash. Additionally, this material is not going to be very comfortable in a warm or humid climate.

This harness is an excellent option for owners of smaller dogs looking for something that won’t cause any chafing. The Voyager soft harness is exactly that, soft. It’s also machine washable and comes at a fairly low price. However, this harness doesn’t offer much control and has very little room for adjusting. On the bright side, the color and material choices are cute, so if you need a harness for your dog to wear around the house, this one might work.

This is an excellent harness with a bright, pretty design designed to take the pressure off a dog’s neck. The easy-on buckle makes it easy to put this on quickly. It’s durable and made with premium material throughout. However, there are a few design flaws here. The leash attachment on the back is loosely threaded onto a nylon webbing loop, so it may not offer the precise control a dog owner needs for training.  Also, this is best for dogs that have a medium to larger build. Sizing can be tough because the chest panel is not adjustable. It can be backed out of, so owners of escape artist dogs should beware this could be an issue.

The Didog soft harness is an excellent harness for a wide range of dogs- except the ones who pull or are known escape artists. It’s an easy to put on design with excellent padding throughout the harness and a back and front metal ring for leash attachment. We were wondering why, with all the soft fleece, the buckle is still right behind the dog’s armpit. This could cause chafing. So while it’s cute and stylish, this one is better for casual walkers.

The Julius canine power harness is one of the best design harnesses on the market. It is made of some of the best materials we’ve seen including straps made out of fray-proof seatbelt style nylon webbing, ripstop nylon, and nylon edging with reflective material. The metal D-ring is securely fixed in place with this webbing. When properly adjusted the plastic buckle for this harness will not chafe and end up behind the dog’s legs. This harness is designed specifically not to constrict the dog’s throat and will allow free movement. This harness is a favorite among owners of bully breeds. We were excited when we saw all of the aftermarket custom patches that can be affixed to this harness using the convenient Velcro on each side.

The Pawtitas reflective padded harness is a standard step-in back clip harness that comes in some really pretty colors with matching (not included) collars, leashes, and other accessories. We like the neoprene padding on it but unfortunately, there is no padding on the straps that go behind the front legs, so these can dig in and chafe in the area behind and under the dog’s leg. There seem to be a few issues with sizing these properly and the neck opening is not adjustable. These work well with smaller to mid-sized dogs but we don’t feel like the harness would stand up to a larger dog or super aggressive pulling dog as there are some weak points in its design.

We are a big fan of the strong duck canvas used in Carhartt products and were excited to see this harness made out of the same material with the same edge binding for durability and comfort. However, the harness is made by Signature Products Group who licensed the Carhartt name. It is a cute harness with lots of additional matching accessories available for purchase separately, but we found some issues right away. While this harness has minimal padding, the edge binding helps with comfort. Still, where some of the seams are joined, the corners are stiff and can chafe. We love the strong metal D-rings on the top and front and heavy-duty hardware throughout.  However, the meh webbing isn’t sewn as securely as we’d have hoped and the chest panel can be chewed by some dogs while they are wearing the collar.

These are adjustable harnesses with many sizes and colors to choose from. The martingale loop on the back helps discourage from pulling but we didn’t feel like it was totally secure. The manufacturer is very proud of the “Swiss velvet” that protects the dog’s underarms and skin from chafing, but the buckles themselves lie directly in those areas, and the velvet only covers the strap attached to them, not the buckles. It will need to be readjusted frequently so the dog cannot back out of it. Overall, not a bad harness, but probably not the best made one we’ve come across or the most comfortable, Swiss velvet or not.

We were very excited about this harness, the steel components and other elements looked promising. For outdoor adventures, the front chest panel can offer a little extra protection and it’s a rugged design. However, the steel adjustment hardware can actually wear down the nylon webbing and weaken it over time. It is a fairly heavy harness as well, so smaller or older dogs may not like it as much.  There is not adequate protection for the dog in the event the steel wears through the padding as it will then chafe directly against the dog’s skin, so owners will want to check this regularly to be sure the part of the harness padding the dog’s skin is not wearing down or damaged.

This is a great product for the price. We like the metal D-ring for the leash attachment and the reflective material for safety. The colors are attractive and there’s a good choice of sizes. We think this could work with all sizes of dogs. The padding, for the most part, protects the dog from the buckles, but there are still edges that can chafe. Therefore, fit is going to be important as the chest panel may dig into your dog’s underarms.

How to Choose

Material
This is an extremely important factor in a harness. The material contributes to the quality of the harness and helps you understand its intended purpose. For example, if you and your dog go on hikes, it’s probably for the best that you know the material is tough, water resistant, and can handle whatever nature throws at it.

Design
Some harness are slip-ons, step-ins, or something in between when it comes to design. Pick one that “fits” your dog and what’s easier for you to put on them.

Leash Attachment
The type of leash attachments a harness sports could mean the difference between your dog going into sled mode or offering you a lot of control for your walks. Which is why you need to consider it when you pick a harness, because you should be walking your dog – not the other way around.

Points of Adjustment
Making sure a harness is going to fit is extremely important and knowing you can make adjustments so it fits your dog perfectly, priceless.

Color Options
Some of the harnesses out there are more practical with less color options, but some are extremely fashionable!

Body Type Matters

It’s no surprise that dogs come in all shapes and sizes. But as owners, we need to be extra sure to meet all the needs of our dogs when it comes to picking a harness that will properly fit them. Some dogs, like Dachshunds, need a little bit more support than a bigger dog. But with a bigger dog, you may need to opt-in for a harness that is tougher and helps with control.

With that said, just because a harness is excellent for 90% of all dog breeds doesn’t mean it’s good for yours. Check out some of our breed-specific harness reviews for more information:

Harness vs. Collar

Collars are an item that every dog should wear for identification purposes. However, there’s little debate within the veterinary and training community about the superiority of harnesses to collars for walking your dog.

Using just a collar for walks can lead to devastating damage to the trachea due to the constant pressure on the throat and neck. This is only magnified when owners resort to using choke or prong collars. Here’s a resource rating different types of harness compared to collars.

In order to keep safe control over your dog, harnesses are a safe and easy way to do it. But harness should be used alongside proper training. Training wins everytime. But with harness you have a lot of options to consider, especially with leash attachments.

Types of Leash Attachment

Leash attachments are where you attach your leash (shocker!) but the different types give you vastly different amounts of control.

Back-clip harnesses: This type of leash attachment is always found on the dog’s back. The beauty of this leash attachment is you don’t need to worry about them getting tangled but be warned, if you have a puller they can go full dog-sled on you.

Front-clip harnesses: Have a terrible puller and need some assistance training them to walk? Then the this type of leash attachment is perfect for your needs. It give you a lot more control because it’s located at the front of the harness. So when your dog pulls towards something, they naturally just turn themselves around, losing all their momentum! Isn’t physics great! Overall, this is perfect for the short-term until they’re trained to walk properly. Due to it being located on the front, it’s prone to getting tangled and under your dog’s legs.

The most important thing about leash attachments is you pick the one that fits your needs. You’ll find many harnesses actually have both, giving you the flexibility to decide which one to use.

Time to Suit Up

We hope that these reviews have helped you pick the perfect fit for you and your dog. There are a lot of options out there but we’re sure that you’ll be able to find one that your puppy loves. Let us know which one you decided to go with and enjoy the walks with your furry friend!
