Best Wooden Dog Crate

Wood crates are an attractive alternative to plastic and wire options to crate your dog within your home. We looked for the most popular products that were sturdy, versatile and easy to clean. The crates on the top of our list are the higher-end furniture style wood dog crates such as the BB Custom Doggie Dens that are designed for durability because cheaper crates can be easily destroyed by puppies, energetic or nervous dogs. Our reviews include some crates that we do not recommend but are popular as we wanted to research the range of popular crates.

While we liked the initial appearance of this crate,  upon closer inspection, its cheap construction and design flaws became apparent.  We’re still not sure why you would use the cheapest material (MDF) for the part that is meant to contain the dog, but this is the case with this crate. The bars are made of aluminum, and were easily bent out of the frame. The top does not affix to the sides so if your dog was able to push against the top he could easily knock it over and escape. This might work for a smaller or senior dog, but any puppy or energetic dog will jailbreak it in record time. We might use it as a fence system.

This is an attractive dog crate, and we liked the all wood construction. However, it is also weak and has a lot of design flaws that make it unsuitable for a dog or puppy that likes to chew or has anxiety. The bottom is not well reinforced, and with a few strong pushes, the hinges can be compromised and the entire thing will come apart. This may be suitable for a smaller dog but we cannot recommend it for larger or energetic dogs.

Our Review

These are some of our favorite wood dog crates.  These are heavy, well reinforced, and designed to safely contain your dog. They ship fully assembled and are more of a piece of furniture than a crate, but heavy duty as well, allowing the top of the crate to be used like a sideboard or dresser. The attractive color options should fit in with any home’s decor, and they make smaller dog crates too. These are the top-of-the-line homes for your pup.

Another budget wood dog crate,  this one is billed as being solid wood, but the wood is thin, can easily be chewed or pushed, weakening the spindles. The finish is cheap and scratches easily. If you have a dog that is not crate trained, energetic, or destructive, this is not the crate for you. It may be suitable for an older dog or dogs that are not interested in chewing or breaking out of crates.

This is one of the better budget wood dog crates on Amazon, because the wood is better quality, the front door of the kennel where dogs tend to chew the most is reinforced with Plexiglas, and the waterproof base of the kennel is attached and flush with the floor. The finish on this dog crate appears to be decent quality and the wood is a little thicker than in similar crates.

This crate has excellent design, but the materials fall far short. It appears you can have the best of both worlds, the durability of a steel cage, with the attractiveness of a wood crate that blends in with your furniture. Unfortunately the wire portion of this cage is weak, and can easily be bent even by small dogs. The powder coating wears off easily after being chewed for a short period of time. The finish on the wood portion of the cage scratches easily, and the assembly of the cage maybe simple, but it does not hold together well. The plastic tray is cheap and thin and easily cracks with light use.

This is one of our favorite wood and wire crates on Amazon. We like the design that makes it more difficult for a dog to chew up the wood. The door opens and then can be slid inside the kennel to save space. The finish is more durable than cheap stained wood dog crates. While it doesn’t have a plastic tray that slides in and out, it is easy to clean because of the finish and the base of the kennel is a little more sturdy.

This is an adorable design, and we just wish that the wood spindles weren’t as thin as dowels and easily chewed. The doors can be pushed outwards, and because the hinges are put in with such short screws, it doesn’t take much to completely push this crate apart. We like the durable finish, and the removable tray that slides out. Three doors seems a bit much though, and so many openings just weakens this crate. We give it points for being attractive and cute, but can’t recommend it for a dog being crate trained, a puppy, or an energetic dog.

These are some of the most beautiful dog crates we’ve ever seen. We love the rustic industrial hardware on them, the many finish and paint options, the chew guard option available, and the various sizes. While some of them look a little bit like an old-fashioned paddy wagon, these will blend in well with most home interiors. The lead time is not as long as some custom kennel manufacturers, but it is still something to consider. Overall an outstanding product and made in the United States by local artisans.

This is the crate that we recommend you go out and buy after your dog has destroyed a cheap one. Its attractive industrial design could pass for a really cute jail cell. The metal bars around the viewing area of the crate are not easily bent or chewed as they are sturdy and wide. The wood construction is sturdy and reinforced with a metal frame so that your clever jailbreaker can’t simply push the entire thing apart. It is a little ways off the floor, so if your dog is injured or struggles to step up, this may be a consideration for you. This is our favorite of the budget wood dog crates we’ve reviewed here.

This is a sturdier dog crate than a lot of similar wood ones but has wood spindles that can easily be chewed out by an energetic or anxious dog. While it is more complex to assemble, it does appear to have fewer weak points that can be easily blown out by a determined dog pushing against the walls or the top. We are also fans of the door hardware, as it’s much better engineered than other wooden crates with a similar design.

This super cute indoor dog house design is great for smaller dogs. Unfortunately, the wire latch on the door looks so cheap and weak that we’re certain even a small dog can easily push on this for a short period of time and break out. We wish that the top had a lid with a latch that could easily be opened, as this thing is nearly impossible to clean with just a small little door and we’re feeling like Alice in Wonderland trying to get inside of it. Because of its construction, it can easily be modified but we’d rather have all the right features out-of-the-box.

While this dog crate looks cute on the outside, its shoddy design, shortcuts with materials and overall construction make it unsuitable for any dog that actually has teeth. The “wicker” is made out of plastic which most dogs will find irresistible to chew on. Beneath the wicker the wire frame consists of large gaps that dogs could easily become trapped in while trying to escape. This crate could easily become a death trap for a dog contained inside who got caught or ensnared in any part of it. Perhaps if you were going to buy this and never put the door on it could be a cozy den but again we do not like the plastic around dogs.  The price for this product is not appropriate for the quality or safety risks this poses to a dog.

We love this design, but it looks like a mass-produced version of the B&B or kennel and crate brand custom wood dog crates. The metal bars do not look as sturdy as the rebar on the custom version of this crate, and the hardware also looks a little flimsy. We love all the colors that these are available in, and if you’re looking for a good compromise between a budget wooden dog crate and a custom wooden dog crate, these are an excellent choice. We do wish that this one came with the divider available in the custom versions of these kinds of crates.

We love this little dog cabinet. It creates a safe den for your small dog. It has a furniture grade finish, a hinge top allowing you to easily get in for cleaning and retrieval of your dog if need be. It does not have a door on the front, so it will not be suitable for crate training or containment.

How to Choose a Wood Dog Crate

For the right dog, plastic and wire kennels can be a thing of the past with an attractive wood crate. If your dog has anxiety issues or is an escape artist and can find his way out of Alcatraz, a wood crate may not be the best option for you. Most wood crates will not hold up well to anxiety, chewing or potty accidents, which can destroy cheap wood and encourage repeated bad behaviour. Wood crates are best for dogs that are already crate-trained and comfortable being confined.

For aesthetics, consider what colors/stains/designs would look best in your home. Where in your home will you have the wood dog crate, and are there any aesthetic concerns? A crate should not be associated with anxiety for your dog so you will want to place it somewhere that doesn’t feel like a punishment. That’s why there are so many attractive and stylish crates that you won’t mind having in your living room or bedroom!

Choose a crate appropriate for your dog’s adult size. The dog should be able to stand, sleep, and sit up comfortably in it. If a kennel is too large, your dog may use part of it for a toilet.

There are several major categories for wood dog crates:

Assembly-Required Mass Manufactured Dog Crates: Cheap, assemble-yourself crates.

  • These are usually easy for most dogs to blow out of if they are determined enough.
  • Most of them do not have metal reinforcement, negligible finishes that can easily be scratched up (and may be toxic to your dog).
  • These won’t hold up to much abuse.

Custom-Made Wood Dog Crates: High-end, custom crates that are as sturdy as fine furniture.

  • Typically made with dog-friendly stains/finishes
  • Sturdy enough for years of use
  • Will contain most dogs
  • Attractive designs, most offer custom stain or paint options.

Semi-Custom Dog Crates: Compromise between cheaper crates and custom

  • Based on the design and construction of custom wood dog crates
  • Shorter lead times.
  • Sturdier than mass-market crates

While we are against use of a crate as a substitute for appropriate potty training or excessive containment, we recognize the advantages of a dog being accustomed to being in a crate periodically and having a “den” to hang out in. Your dog can learn confidence in being by himself occasionally.
