Our Review

The Miele vacuums are some of the best we’ve ever seen. Made in Germany they are built to last and loaded with tons of thoughtful features. The C1 is just the base model and it runs circles around other vacuums that are even a hundred dollars less. The attachments include the main floorhead meant for carpeting, the parquet twister floorhead for bare floors, and then a dusting brush, upholstery tool and crevice nozzle. Rounding out the line-up is the handheld mini turbo brush- this little guy is even more powerful than some of the full-size upright vacuums on the market. The parquet twister excels at picking up pet hair and most debris easily with minimal scattering.

The drawbacks for this vacuum are the cost of the bags and filters needed. It can be a little noisy on bare surfaces and the weight of it may be awkward for some pet owners to use. For the high price point these issues may be deal breakers for some.

Consider though that while bags may seem to be “old” technology they still do the best job at keeping down the dust and containing it completely.

Our Review

This vacuum cleaner strikes the right balance for us with quality and features. It has the versatility of a stick vacuum, canister or upright depending on the mode. The dual brush roller technology prevents debris scattering and polishes floors as it cleans. Pet hair is being sucked towards it before it even gets near it.

We love how easy it is to push a button and detach the canister to use the powered lift away function- to easily get underneath furniture or to use the pet multi-tool or power brush to clean stairs and upholstery. It’s almost like having one of those slim stick vacuums.

This vacuum has bright LED headlights above both the brush rollers and unlike any of the other vacuums we’ve reviewed- in the wand itself so that you will have illumination regardless of the mode you’re using the vacuum in.  You can easily switch between bare floor and carpet mode with a button right on the handle. Some users may struggle with the self-propelled function on carpeted surfaces but it makes it easy to move quickly and efficiently with maximum suction.

Some users may not like how strong the suction is when using it on rugs but we’d rather have a vacuum that is strong enough to get dirt out of carpet and have to use the attachments to clean rugs than have a vacuum with poor suction that does a mediocre job. Just be careful around things like drapery, this thing will gobble up everything in its path.

This is an ok vacuum for the price with a low profile head containing a brush roll that easily pulls up pet hair. Swivel steering allows for tight maneuvering in small spaces. You can adjust for the height of your carpet with a knob on the front bottom. The canister is generously sized and it’s not as simple to empty. We like the bristles on the sides that keep the scatter to a minimum and help address pet hair that gathers along edges and baseboards. Unfortunately, it does feel a little flimsy and we don’t know that this one will hold up well in a multi-pet household with lots of different fur types.

This vacuum has a low profile brush roll specifically designed to reduce the amount of hair that gets wrapped around it. Longer hair will still build up on it though. The knob on the top of the brush roll allows 5 settings for varying floor types from high pile carpet to bare floors. We love that it will go under more furniture and overhanging surfaces. We weren’t happy with how you have to turn off the brush manually when using wand. This vacuum has a pretty bad scatter rate on hard floors as well and does not pick up heavier debris.

Our Review

This is a very advanced design with lots of thoughtful features. Unfortunately, it does have some weak points we wanted to point out first. The latch that holds the canister closed is weak and can fall open easily. It’s large and if you are used to an upright vacuum may be difficult to maneuver around. That being said, the wand and hose are lightweight.

We like that the handle articulates a full 360 degrees so your hose will not kink up as easily. When cleaning, this did not do well with larger debris such as pet food and clumps of dirt. However, it does very well with hair and smaller particles that are resting lower in carpet or on a bare floor. And with all Dysons, keep in mind that the only places that can service or repair are Dyson facilities.

Our Review

This Dyson stick vacuum is extremely versatile. It has an easy to use quick release system for changing functions easily whether you are using it like a handheld vacuum or cleaning hard-to-reach areas of your home. We absolutely love that there are two roller heads- a soft one that engages bare floors well, pulling up debris with a polishing action to remove fine dirt and hair. The motorized brush roll is great for use on carpets or surfaces that need bristles to loosen debris or hair.
The V10 has improved on the previous models in most ways except the canister release, it causes a cloud of dust. The vacuum’s charging unit plugs into the back of the vacuum and while the first charge took the longest it takes anywhere from 2-4 hours to recharge. We noticed that suction and function began to decrease closer to 50 minutes than 60.
There are 3 versions of the V10 and while we’re reviewing the “top” Absolute model, the main differences are that this one has the fluffy cleaning head while the “Animal” and “Motorhead” do not. The Absolute model has a smaller dusting attachment and mini motorized brushroll for use on furniture and smaller spots.
A solid contender, this vacuum does well with most jobs but where it really shines is on bare, laminate or hardwood type floors. There is some scatter with bigger debris particles but with pet hair, dander, and smaller particles it does an outstanding job.

Our Review

This is a decent vacuum with some thoughtful features such as the bright LED headlights and ease at changing the suction control. However, there are some issues we didn’t like. This vacuum is cheaply built. It’s not meant for a large home as it can overheat and may not hold up well when used for longer periods of time. When the brush roller is turned off the vacuum has a much more narrow cleaning path. It seems to do well transitioning from carpet to bare floors but there is a lot of scattering with debris like kitty litter and food. The suction is weakened with the attachments and the pet hair tool is not nearly as efficient as just the wand by itself. For a household with a lot of carpet, square footage or multiple pets this one may not hold up as well.

This is a great vacuum cleaner for a household with multiple floor types. It’s a very attractive design. It has a lift-off canister function and a great selection of hand tools, features found in vacuums that cost twice as much. You can control suction easily from the handle and it automatically detects the kind of surface and height of carpet pile. This feature can be further enhanced by using the Hoover app to customize how your vacuum tackles various scenarios. The LED lighting is a great feature helping you see what’s ahead. This one does well with pet hair and the attachments help you reach every crevice and dust surfaces as well. Unfortunately, Hoover does not have the best track record with customer service in the event you have any complications with the vacuum.

This is a classic Hoover design with wind tunnel technology. It comes with an accessories clip to hold a crevice tool, dusting brush, and brush roll. It comes in under 17 lbs but barely– so it’s not a lightweight design. We like the system indicator light, the retractable cord, 8 foot long stretch hose and thoughtful attachments. Unfortunately, it does begin to lose suction with the attachments and brush rolls get clogged quickly with hair and fur. And most importantly- this one does not do well on bare floors. Even though you can adjust the settings for floor height, there is still an excessive scattering of debris with this one on bare floors. On carpets though, this one does very well as long as you clean the filter, canister and brush roll frequently.

Our Review

This vacuum is very expensive but one of the cheaper options from iRobot, believe it or not. It comes loaded with features. It can run up to 2 hours in a cleaning cycle before returning to its docking station. It works with two brush rolls that prevent scattering and maneuver the vacuum and a spinning propeller-like brush that feeds debris into the path of the rollers. It has a very sophisticated navigation system including sensors and a camera that allows it to map your home, avoid furniture and other obstacles, and drive itself back to the charger when the cleaning cycle is done. If you’re worried about it falling down stairs or into an area where it shouldn’t be, it also comes with 2 “virtual walls” that allow you to keep it out.
The app that comes with iRobot is easy to navigate and convenient- especially if you are away from home and need to tidy up in a hurry.
It does have its setbacks though. This is not a primary vacuum. It can’t do hard to reach surfaces or dust. It will need a strong wifi connection through the entire house. It has serious problems working on dark or black carpet and will avoid those areas because its sensors think it’s a cliff or precipice. To be covered under warranty your home’s floor has to be “optimized” for best results. It has a very small bin. And it does not go up or down stairs so if you have multiple levels in your home you’d need to buy several.
Overall we think it’s a great maintenance vacuum to keep up with the housework in between deep cleans but most pet owners will know that some days you just need to be able to tackle the fur and pet dander “manually” to get it all taken care of.

This Shark stick-style vacuum has the same DuoClean technology in our overall favorite vacuum that directly engages bare floors to polish them. The bright LED headlights and lights on the wand make it easy to see what you’re doing and this unit slides easily under beds and the sofa to tackle those hard to reach areas. It’s great for lighter duty cleaning but doesn’t like deep total-house cleaning as it can overheat if used too long. We love that the brush roll is not shielded with a guard so it doesn’t push debris around. While the brush roll can get clogged with hair, it’s easy to reach. This vacuum easily breaks down to a small hand-held style vacuum for smaller jobs or cleaning out a car, for example. The .91 dry quart capacity canister empties easily.

Our Review

This vacuum is one of the most popular on Amazon and for good reason. It’s mid-range as far as price points for vacuum cleaners go and loaded with great features. The lift away canister function makes cleaning hard to reach areas of your home a snap. While there’s some scattering with using the brush rollers, using the pet power brush will quickly get larger debris up. It does a remarkable job on carpet and bare floors alike and we love how easy it is to empty the canister. It gets more of the dust and hair inside the canister as proven by how the outside of it stays clean even after a deep cleaning job. It holds up well with heavy use and just keeps going even after devouring major debris such as huge chunks of husky hair. It’s lighter than many similar upright vacuums and doesn’t tip over easily. We have one that we’ve been using for 3 years in a multiple-cat, mutiple teenager household and it’s kept ticking through a major home renovation and daily, heavy use.

This vacuum does a great job on bare floors and carpets alike, with the ability to turn off the brushes if you’re worried about your bare floors. We don’t like bags, because they are expensive and an ongoing added cost to the appliance (and we like to see what we vacuumed up in a clear canister), but for some users, these are preferable to emptying a canister. The super-bright LED headlights are nice, casting a bright light on the area you are vacuuming. The front of this vacuum is very low, allowing you to nick it under furniture to get about the first 5 inches or so very clean.

Unfortunately, it is heavy and can be cumbersome. We feel like the performance on bare floors outweighs this issue, but a heavy vacuum is not for everyone. If the bulk and weight make you hesitant, the Miele Cat and Dog canister vac might be a better option to consider.

The Eufy Anker does a halfway decent job cleaning bare floors and very thin carpeted areas (think office carpet thickness). We absolutely love how thin it is (just under 3 inches on a bare floor), it went under our sofa with no problem (although the dog went looking for it long after the cleaning cycle had finished). Its cleaning cycle runs at just over an hour before it returned to its base.

This is a nice little device but it’s not as smart as some of the pricier robot models non the market, therefore you must proof your home a little in advance of its cleaning cycle- remove cables and things on the floor that might get tangled up in it. Longer pet hair and human hair seems to cause big issues with this one and might necessitate cleaning and untangling the roller. It is best for smaller homes like apartments without stairs or other hazards for it.

We like the price on this one and feel it’s a good value if you are wanting to branch out into robot technology without spending too much or knowing if your pet will attack it.

Our Review

We love being able to yell at Alexa to please clean up a mess we made on our way out the door to somewhere knowing it will be cleaned up upon our return. The reality is that too many scary internet videos of robot vacuums carefully and methodically spreading animal waste around a floor tends to make us nervous about actually running a cleaning cycle while we’re away. That being said, the convenience of a vacuum cleaning while you are at home is not bad, and this Roomba is far superior to earlier models (which 5 years ago had us fleeing for the hills, hello Shark!).  This I7 allows you to program which rooms get cleaned and when, and keep-away zones. It actually does learn very quickly and adapt to your home. Dark carpets or rugs confuse it and it may avoid them. This one has a 3.5 inch clearance, which is not as low as the Eufy model we also reviewed, so it didn’t make it under the sofa. However, it did stay away from curtains as requested.

The rollers don’t handle really long hair (especially human hair) as well and so these units are not completely maintenance-free. Replacement rubber rollers are easy to order, and these do get chewed up, especially if your home has a lot of raised transitions. You’ll need to check it periodically, especially if it starts screaming for help, the error may not actually correspond to what actually went wrong. Robot vacuums do tend to maul carpets with trims and sofas with tassels and you must never leave a phone charger cord laying around.

Roombas tend to do best on bare floors or carpets that weren’t terribly dirty to begin with. We like to consider them more of a maintenance tool, because let’s be honest here- robot vacuums are finally being made with strong suction but will never have the strength of a traditional good old upright vacuum.

Choosing a vacuum cleaner can feel as complicated as buying a new car. There are many reliable trusted brands that all make many different models. There are bells and whistles and features you didn’t even know you needed. With so much to choose from in this market, take a thorough inventory of where and how you’ll be using a vacuum before you begin shopping. First of all, think about your own needs- Do you have allergies or a sensitivity to dust? Will you need a vacuum that is lightweight or would you prefer a canister style that can be dragged along behind you? Is having everything at your fingertips on an upright vacuum better? The new stick vacuums cleaners on the market are lighter than ever and many are cordless too.

Think about your budget. Some vacuum cleaners will need ongoing purchases of filters and bags, while others are more low maintenance with no bags and reusable filters.

Next, consider your home environment- do you have hardwood floors, tile, laminate, carpet or a combination? Do you have a lot of stairs you’ll need to vacuum? If you have a lot of bare floors, it’s good to choose a vacuum meant for bare floors or that comes with attachments such as a bare-floor brush or separate roller head. Carpeting requires a powerful vacuum with enough suction to pull dirt, hair, and dander from the fibers and weave. Some vacuums require changing attachments to go from a bare floor to carpet, others can be adjusted with the flip of a switch.

Are there high ceilings, ceiling fans, ledges or other hard to reach places in your home? Many vacuums come with great tools and attachments for dusting and reaching those areas. A vacuum cleaner is an effective alternative to using a cloth or other duster that may stir up and encourage more dust to settle back down you’re done cleaning.

Cleaning and vacuuming stir up a lot of dust so most vacuum cleaners have filters built in to help remove allergens such as mites, pollen, fur, dust, and other contaminants from the air. Most vacuum cleaners today have reusable filters that can be cleaned and others will need to be replaced. Many vacuums have HEPA filters but others are equipped only with standard filters that won’t pull as much out of the air. You may breathe better with a stronger filter to keep the bad stuff out of the air but the filter will need to be changed or cleaned regularly to be effective.

Bagless vacuum cleaners are increasingly popular, but if anyone in your home is sensitive to dust, allergens or has respiratory health concerns, you may want to consider a vacuum cleaner that uses bags. These are easily discarded without releasing dust back into the air and most vacuum cleaners with bags have great guarantees about how much dust they pick up. However, the trade-off is that bags can be expensive and your vacuum cleaner will be useless without them on hand.

Bagless vacuum cleaners typically have a clear canister that sits in front of or below the filter that is emptied with a hinged door at the bottom. These are usually easy to clean with a visual indicator of how full the canister is getting. It’s highly gratifying to observe how much your vacuum cleaner is picking up close and personal through a clear canister.

Next, consider your pets. Do they have long or short hair? Some vacuums have brush rolls meant specifically for pet hair and others may not fare so well with longer pet hair or big clumps of it.

We’ve got a list of some of our favorite vacuums for removing pet hair sorted into the categories below:

Upright Vacuum: Typically a vacuum cleaner designed around a vertical shaft with a handle on the top and the motor, rotating brush and intake at the bottom with a canister or vacuum cleaner bag in between.

  • Most common variety of vacuum
  • Some models can convert to a canister mode
  • Typically the most inexpensive

Canister Vacuum: A separate canister containing the motor and canister/bag attached to a long wand by a hose.

  • Typically made by luxury or higher end brands
  • Ideal for both bare or carpeted floors
  • Depending on its size and weight may make stairs harder to clean
  • Takes up more space for storage

Stick Vacuum: Lightweight with a long stick-like handle, the canister typically just below the handle.

  • Often available in cordless models
  • May sacrifice power for size
  • Best for smaller areas and light cleanings such as a kitchen or workroom
  • Smaller canister size

Robot Vacuum: Smaller automatic vacuum cleaners (usually flat cylinder shaped) that function using a computer to move around rooms, map out your home and find their way back to a charger

  • Higher price point
  • Time-saving and convenient
  • Can be programmed to vacuum when you are at work
  • Not as convenient for multi-level homes

Making a decision can be overwhelming but once you’ve sat down to evaluate your needs versus the features out there you’ll be well on your way to making a purchase that should make your life easier and your home cleaner.
