Best Slow Feeder Dog Bowl

Slow feeder dog bowls are a great option for pups who are enthusiastic eaters. There are many shapes, sizes and types on the market, predominantly made from stainless steel, ceramic, plastic, or silicone. We’re a big fan of silicone and steel feeding solutions because they are durable, not as porous, and easiest to keep clean. When purchasing a plastic bowl you should ensure the plastic is non-toxic, phthalate-free, and BPA-free. Plastic bowls will need to be replaced more frequently as well as the plastic breaks down.

This is an excellent product for pets on the go. We love that the bowls can be folded flat for a backpack or in the car. We don’t recommend for daily use as it doesn’t look to be as durable. The rings around the top are made of plastic and could crack with repeated folding/unfolding.

This is an outstanding design as far as the orientation of the ridges and knobs in the bottom. It will very effectively slow down dogs of all sizes. Bamboo fiber composite materials are definitely better for the environment and as this material breaks down it will not be as toxic as decaying plastic would be. The downside is that it can be brittle and feel slimy and not “squeaky” clean as plastic might. Can be washed in the dishwasher. Molded from Ridges and bumps in various heights to slow down eating. Not suitable as a water dish.

These are cute bowls, in lots of cute colors and styles (the hearts!) but they are not good for bigger dogs, power chewers, or long-term use. Dishwasher safe. While the plastic may be safe (ABS Plastic construction, PBA, PVC and Phthalate free), it’s definitely on the lower-end of the quality spectrum.

Overall this is a well-made bowl, it’s pretty heavy duty, sturdy and the wide construction makes it more difficult to tip over. We like that there are so many designs and colors to choose from. Some of them though don’t seem as though they would slow a dog down who could easily gulp the food following the spiral or circular grooves. In fact, we know a certain bulldog who did just that after using the bowl twice.

This is definitely a premium-grade dog bowl. We love the bonded silicone ring on the bottom and the rolled smooth edges that should prevent the cutting and irritation some dogs experience from plastic bowls with rough or narrow ridges. The big smooth dome in the middle is not going to cause as much chafing as the dog eats, however some dogs may try to bite it, so you’d want to monitor your dog to avoid that. The small size is as big as most other dog bowls’ medium capacity so it may not slow down your little pups as they eat.

This is one of our favorites of the plastic “maze” style bowls because of the complexity of the design effectively slowing down eating. It is really sturdy plastic with a smooth feel to it. It slows down smaller to mid-sized dogs but larger dogs or dogs with a shorter snout may have a hard time eating from it without using their tongues. It’s great for wet or dry food and cleans up easily in the top rack of the dishwasher. It has not become as brittle over time as other dishes.

We thought these bowls were super cute, but they are extremely impractical. Food can be slopped into the water, and water into the food. This is a unique design among the plastic slow feed bowl options. We love the anti-slip rubber on the base and the sloped design making it more difficult to tip over during feeding time. These bowls are fairly heavy duty, with the medium weighing nearly a pound and a half. The bowl may be easy for smaller pups to gulp their food from, as the raised areas and protrusions are not as close together as on other bowls.

For dogs that may get discouraged with a slow-feed bowl, this has a lovely rounded compartment in the center that will allow them one or two big gulps to spark their interest, then they will be more motivated to forage for the rest of the food in the bowl. While the edges are rounded, they are a little squared off and the mouth and jaws of some dogs may be irritated by this. This is also a fairly lightweight bowl.

We love this dish because of its unique but thoughtful design, comprised of varying heights of plastic “blades” of grass. While initially we were concerned about it being shallow, by the time the dog pushes food out to the edge he’s usually going to be able to eat it. If you have a hard time with your dog figuring out slow feed bowls, this one might actually slow him down. It might be attractive to a power chewing dog so we do recommend supervision while using this feeder. It is well rounded and smooth.

The protrusions/stanchions in this bowl are not molded/stamped/welded as part of the bow. They are screwed on, and not watertight. Moisture, dog saliva, and bacteria can accumulate under them. It will begin to rust and is not very good quality steel. This design was promising but the execution is poor and we cannot recommend this dog bowl. The metal on the stanchions is thin and can be crushed by a dog, creating an extremely dangerous hazard.

This  bowl is poorly designed. We are not confident that it would work efficiently and slow down any size or breed of dog. The high arches around the base of the bowl make it easy for any dog to flip the bowl over.

This is an outstanding product with a lot of potential but not on its own. We’d recommend using this with a standard stainless steel bowl to keep food contained. When feeding a dog with this, it’s more like feeding off of a mat. There is no lip or ridge to keep the food contained, and your dog will end up eating most of his food off the floor. So while we are a big fan of silicone and how stable and safe it is to use with your dog, we’d recommend you only use this with a bowl.

This is a thoughtful design for dogs who may struggle to eat from a bowl closer to the ground. It can be raised from floor level to 6 inches to 10 inches off the ground. While it’s a good idea, the execution needs a lot of improvement. The legs are poor quality, difficult to adjust and keep in place. They often give way and are cheaply made, which is unfortunate because the bowl itself is not that bad. Don’t spend the extra money on this one.

The shaft that the top “bone rotation obstacle” attaches to uses a snap-together fitting that looks as though it could snap off. The hole at the base of the dish could harbor bacteria or leak unless constantly cleaned and the seal ring that keeps the entire thing watertight looks like something we’d lose the moment we set it down somewhere. We are not sure we’d even use this one for a 15 year old cat.

How to Choose a Slow Feeding Dog Bowl

What kind of food do you feed your dog? Most of these work well with wet food or dry kibble, but some may be better suited to a specific kind of food. What is the size of your dog in relation to the bowl? The length of his snout will play a big role in how effective these bowls are.

Consider the following about materials when choosing a bowl:

Ceramic bowls should be lead-free, smooth and free of any surface imperfections, chips or cracks

  • Will need to be checked on an ongoing basis for chips and cracks in ceramic, because the material underneath the glaze is porous and can harbor bacteria.
  • If bowl cracks or flakes, loose pieces of glaze or ceramic are dangerous if ingested by dog

Silicone feeders are typically mats or flat feeders, so if your dog is messy consider adding a stainless steel bowl or other tray to contain food.

  • An excellent material for dog bowls, as it is an extremely stable compound and will not break down the way that plastic does.

Stainless Steel: Look for a bowl that does not have loose rubber components or powder coating.

  • Non-porous, much more durable, not as attractive to chewers, Easy to clean and sanitize
  • Corrosion and rust resistant
  • Some dogs do not like metal bowls and they can be noisy

Plastic bowls should be high-quality, heavy-duty plastic listed as phthalate, BPA free. Cheaper plastic bowls may leach harmful chemicals and be more porous. These should be replaced more often.

Not every bowl will be right for every dog and it may be a trial and error process to find the right solution. You want to be sure that your dog is challenged and slowed down by the protrusions and obstructions in the design of the bowl, but that his skin is not irritated, he is not panting too hard or growing too frustrated where he either loses interest in his food or becomes destructive towards the bowl.

For this reason, we recommend either the stainless steel bowl, a silicone feeder (which can also be paired with a stainless bowl for containment), or a ceramic bowl. Plastic or ceramic bowls may be more suitable if you are seeking durability and the stainless bowls do not slow down your dog’s eating.
