Our Review

This is a great product to deliver a high count of probiotics to your cat with the addition of a prebiotic to make those probiotics more available to your cat. This probiotic offers a very good CFU count per serving. It has a range of probiotics that are likely to be beneficial for your cat.

It comes at a reasonable price compared to some other single-serve options at about 50 cents a day. Some people struggle to open the capsules, and some cats have digestive upset after consuming the probiotic, but most consumers seem to be very happy with it. It is often prescribed by veterinarians as well.

This probiotic powder offers one of the highest counts of probiotics on the market per serving, at over 17 billion CFU for each capsule. The powder capsules make it very likely that this probiotic count will make it to your cat alive since it is protected from moisture and air.

The probiotics are formulated to resist stomach acid with a vegetable cap that releases probiotics only after they have already made it through the stomach and are in the intestine. These capsules are made to an extremely high standard in the USA and also come with a solid source of prebiotics.

Expect to pay a bit more for these capsules than some of the competition. Not all cats are fond of the powder on their food or in their water.

If you want a probiotic that has a very high probability of getting to your cat’s intestine effectively and you aren’t looking for huge range or number of probiotics, this might be the one for you. More probiotics don’t necessarily means more success.

These probiotics are micro capsulated to help them reach your cat’s intestines alive. Furthermore, they are packaged very well to stay alive until your cat consumes them. The liver taste is quite appealing to most cats.

There are added vitamins and minerals as well as a prebiotic. This product comes at a fairly high cost compared to some of the competition at nearly a dollar day, and the count of CFU per serving is not nearly as impressive as some other options.

Here is a quality source of a single strain of probiotics that may help you isolate what is helpful to your cat more easily. If your cat has had digestive upset after having multiple strains of probiotics, a single strain product is a very good idea. This probiotic is packaged as a powder in single-serve packets.

Probiotics are more likely to remain viable until they get to your cat since they won’t be exposed to moisture or air. Purina packages probiotics with a microencapsulation proprietary process to help the probiotics survive until they get to your cat’s intestines more easily. Unfortunately, this product does not contain prebiotics, and it comes at a fairly high price.

  • What we Like
  • Tiny pearl is easy to give and does a good job of keeping probiotics away from moisture and air until they are consumed

This product offers something a little bit different with time-released pearls that are designed to get through your cat’s stomach acids and reach the intestine tract alive. The pearls are supposed to release probiotics slowly over 8 to 10 hours, making it much more likely that probiotics will work effectively.

In fact, the company claims that their 3 billion units of CFU per pearl is equal to 45 billion units in a competitive product. Each batch is tested to be sure that it contained the advertised probiotic count and is at high-quality standards.

Still, the probiotic will deplete by the expiration date. Some people struggle to get their cats to consume the hard pill.

This powder comes at an affordable price for a substantial amount of the product. Most cats don’t seem to mind having it sprinkled on their food at all. You can feel some confidence in a product that is USDA organic certified and made in the United States following a formula devised by a veterinarian. Three different types of prebiotics provide your cat with plenty of food for healthy probiotics in their gut.

This formula is designed for cats and dogs, but it seems to have somewhat fewer probiotics than are ideal for cats. Because the powder is in a jar open to the air, it will become less effective as you use it. It is also important to note that while this offers 5 billion CFU per scoop, half a scoop is recommended for animals from 5 to 15 lbs, so your cat will only really get 2.5 billion CFU per serving unless it is larger than 15 lb.

This is a decent powdered probiotic with a good range of probiotics for dogs and cats. It has prebiotic in the form of inulin. It is made in the US at a GMC certified facility. Every patch is expected for quality, so you can feel some confidence in making this purchase decision.

Because this is a loose powder, it may become less effective as it is exposed to the air. It is balanced for both cats and dogs, so the probiotics may not be as ideal for your cat as some other options. Finally, the CFU count per scoop isn’t great on this probiotic compared to some competitors.

If you have a lot of cats who need probiotics and you’re looking for the best possible price, this might be the right choice for you. You get a pound of probiotic powder for half the price that you typically pay for around 60 packets of a competitor’s products. However, if you can’t use all of that probiotic up quickly, you’ll likely see a reduction in the count since the powder will be exposed to the air every time you open it.

This probiotic doesn’t have as much probiotic count as some other options, but it does also include a prebiotic and it is very easy to add to your cat’s food. If you are looking for quantity over quality in an affordable probiotic, this is a good option.

This is a decent probiotic powder with some added benefits that some people will appreciate. It has added vitamins designed to support your cat’s system in multiple ways. This probiotic is designed to be safe to use along with other medications, so if your cat is undergoing treatment such as antibiotic treatments, it might be a good option. If you are looking for a treat for your cat to deliver probiotics, this may be one of the better options available. Generally, treats aren’t a good option for probiotics since moisture can cause the probiotic to come out of hibernation prematurely.

However, this probiotic utilizes a patented probiotic casing that is supposed to help the probiotic get through packaging and into your cat’s digestive system alive. It contains a good balance of prebiotics as well as probiotics.

This supplement doesn’t deliver nearly as high account of probiotics as some of the competition, and a lot of trust has to be put into the patented probiotic to be delivered alive. It also contains some grain ingredients that may irritate some cats.

If you want a balanced product that is easy to dose and contains a probiotic, enzymes, and a prebiotic, this is a decent consideration. A single probiotic makes it easier for you to isolate what is and is not effective for your pet.

However, enzymes are unlikely to be helpful for your cat, and they may even have negative effects. This product seems to come at a good price for 62 chews, but you’ll need to give your cat at least two and up to four chews per day, which may make it seem more expensive.

Despite having to give multiple chews, you won’t necessarily be giving your cat more probiotics than the competition, since there’s only 50 million CFU per treat.

If you are looking for a daily treat for your cat that contains more than just probiotics, this might be the treat for you. It has L-lysine to help your cat’s immunity and reduce herpes outbreaks. Wild Alaskan salmon oil may improve your cat’s coat, joints, and immunity. Flaxseed and rosemary extract are additional beneficial supplements.

Catnip is provided to make the treat more appealing to your cat and help them be calm. This product is made in the USA and independently lab tested for safety.

The moist formula means that it is unlikely that the probiotics will survive at their manufacturer count by the time they get to your cat. It also doesn’t have as many probiotics as some of the competition.

What You Need to Know About Probiotics for Your Cat

Do Probiotics Work for Cats?

There hasn’t been much research conducted at a large enough scale to be definitive in determining whether probiotics are beneficial to cats. However, research does seem to indicate that probiotics can have some benefits for cats.

Shelter cats who were treated with a probiotic, the Enterococcus faecium strain, had a significant reduction in stress-related diarrhea over shelter cats who were treated with a placebo. Probiotics also seem to improve symptoms in cats who suffer from chronic diarrhea. There are also indications that they had improved constipation symptoms.

Therefore, the evidence does seem clear that probiotics can be beneficial to cats. The trick is being sure that the product you’re buying really does have probiotics, that they survive until they get to your cat’s gut, and that they are of a type that is beneficial for cats.

Understanding CFU

CFU is the measure of probiotics in products produced for your pet. It stands for “Colony Forming Units.” CFU measures how many cells that will be able to colonize in your cat’s gut actually are present in a product. Expect to see CFU in the millions or billions in quality products.

Watch out for False Advertising

While probiotics may well be beneficial to your cat’s digestive system, you need to know how to purchase a product that actually has probiotics for it to work. Many of the products on the market today that advertise probiotics, such as commercial pet food, may not actually contain the probiotics they claim to.

For this reason, you have to be very careful to think critically about the products that you are considering. The probiotics that we’ve listed first have a reasonable probability of containing the probiotics that they claim too. Here are a few things that might rule out probiotics for likelihood of being effective for your cat:

Packaging and Preparing Probiotics

Here are a few important points that important for the survival of probiotics, whether they are intended for humans, dogs, or cat:

  • Cooked without heat. When probiotics are exposed to eat, they may come out of hibernation prematurely or are killed directly by the heat. Therefore, look for products that are cooked without heat and are stored in cool places.
  • Kept from moisture. Moisture can cause probiotics to come out of hibernation prematurely as well, which means they won’t arrive at your cat’s intestine intact. It may be that refrigerated liquid probiotic suspensions remain in hibernation sufficiently, but this isn’t well-supported by research at this time.
  • Air-sealed. As probiotics are exposed to the air they become less effective or die. Therefore, you want to choose products that come in capsules or packets to prevent exposure to the air unless you expect to use the product in a few sittings.

What to Look for in Probiotics

Some probiotics are present in multiple species, while others are specific to particular species. Choosing the right probiotics for cats is essential to successful treatment. More probiotics aren’t necessarily better.

Most studies examined only one strain of probiotic and found benefits. It is possible that multiple strains of bacteria could interfere with one another. That said, here are some of the probiotic strains that might be effective for your cat:

Eubacterium
Enterococcus faecium
Firmicutes
Bacteroidetes
Proteobacteria

What Else Might You Find in a Probiotic Supplement?

Prebiotics

Most of the advertisements around cat digestive aids focus on probiotics, but prebiotics are also essential for your cat to have a healthy digestive system. Prebiotics feed the probiotics that are colonizing in your pet’s gut.

For many cats, getting a healthy balance of prebiotics might be more challenging than for dogs. This is because cats tend to eat a diet that is higher in protein and lower in the grains and vegetables that offer prebiotic benefits.

Cats that are fed a very high protein diet may not be getting the prebiotics that they need. Here are a few prebiotics that might be included in your cat’s probiotic to help them develop a healthy digestive system.

  • Fructooligosaccharide. This is a naturally occurring sugar in a number of fruits, vegetables, and cereal. It makes your pet’s food more digestible and includes specific benefits in absorption of iron, calcium, and other minerals.
  • Inulin. If your cat is diabetic or otherwise doesn’t benefit from more blood sugar, this might be the right prebiotic for you. It has minimal effects on triglycerides and won’t affect your cat’s blood sugar.
  • Pumpkin. Pumpkin is a popular digestive aid for dogs and cats alike. It is often used in probiotics, but keep in mind that it might be a bit fattening for your cat
  • Beta glucan. This is a powerful prebiotic made from medicinal mushrooms. It may have beneficial effects on your cat’s immune system and even have anti-cancer qualities, making this a much more substantial ingredient than just a prebiotic.
Digestive Enzymes

Digestive enzymes can be a confusing topic when it comes to cat probiotics. Enzymes are necessary for your cat’s body to break down food. However, it isn’t clear whether supplementing with digestive enzymes will improve your cat’s digestion.

Here are the primary types of digestive enzymes naturally made in your cat’s pancreas and what they break down:

  • Proteases. meat, eggs, and other proteins
  • Amylases: carbohydrates like grain and some vegetables
  • Lipases: fat including meat and vegetable fat

Is Enzyme Supplementation Effective?

For the vast majority of cats, studies have found enzyme supplementation to be ineffective and even potentially damaging. Some cats have pancreatic damage or a disease that keeps their pancreas from producing sufficient enzymes, called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. These cats do need enzyme supplementation.

However, the condition is quite rare and marked by very distinct feces. For the most part, it would seem that supplementing your cat with enzymes isn’t beneficial and may even have some negative side effects.
