Our Review

We like that Pawstruck is transparent about their ingredients and process with an exceptional guarantee with their products. Their bottle is sturdy with a good quality spray pump on it.

When compared to the other enzymatic cleaners, we found:

  • Pawstruck has the mildest fragrance of all of the products we tested in-depth for this review. You can put this down liberally knowing the smell will dissipate and what doesn’t can be wiped up with a damp cloth and water.
  • Pawstruck eliminated the surface stains on contact just as well as Rocco and Roxie did.
  • Pawstruck had the least amount of “foaming” while we were scrubbing the carpet.

Our Review

This is among our favorite pet urine removers for good reason. It has one of the most potent enzymatic formulas on the market, is formulated to work on both dog and cat urine.  Once applied, this works so quickly you can watch the urine crystals dissolve under a black light in a matter of minutes. It does have a strong spearmint smell but this dissipates quickly as the product dries. It may leave a slight residue when used on wood and certain textiles but this can be wiped off or vacuumed up easily. You don’t have to extract this with a carpet cleaner, once it breaks down it’s gone.  We love how versatile this product is, it can be used on carpet, textiles, and surfaces like wood flooring that most cleaners can’t be applied to. It can be applied liberally to surfaces and will penetrate quickly and thoroughly, even on surfaces like bathroom grout. We’ve saved some very expensive rugs and furniture using this product.

Our Review

This is a versatile and highly effective product and we love that you can get it in both unscented and scented versions. Anti-Icky-Poo even offers a product (P-Bath) to use when you’ve tried other products first to correct the pH balance before applying for optimal results! Even the scented version does dissipate as the product dries and is completely gone within a few days. This product can be used on just about any surface, including wood floors that have been saturated with urine. It does not require scrubbing, blotting, or mopping. It may sometimes leave a residue on certain materials such as leather or synthetic materials but this can easily be wiped off. We still recommend testing in an inconspicuous place. If you don’t want to buy the large 32 oz or gallon size, try a 16oz bottle first.

This is another very potent and concentrated enzymatic cleaner. 8 oz will make up to 128 oz of full strength cleaner, but it can be diluted as strong as 1 part cleaner to 4 parts water for really tough jobs. We love how fast this works and that it penetrates quickly. It’s an exceptional product for using elsewhere in your household on multiple surfaces and locations. It’s great to get rid of urine and other animal smells, such as washing urine-soaked animal bedding. It also works well to get rid of human-related smelly issues such as stinky workout clothes. It is somewhat expensive but it goes a long way.

This product is useful for cleaning but does not penetrate well. Peroxide-based cleaners usually take multiple applications to target and effectively remove urine compounds and odors and are not always effective on older stains. This product may discolor fabrics, textiles and carpet so be sure to test in an inconspicuous area. You will also need to blot or extract with a carpet cleaner if using this on carpet to remove residue.

Our Review

Trinova works fast on surface and new urine stains but takes a little longer to penetrate an older urine stain. It required multiple applications and blotting, but eventually did get up most of the fluorescence from the urine stain and addressed most of the odors. The problem for us was how much of the product we had to put down, we ended up needing to extract it with multiple rags and water.

Additionally, the straw that feeds the spray nozzle does not reach the bottom of the bottle (about 3/4″ off) and this would make it hard to use the last of the product. The spray nozzle itself was hard to use and was difficult to use for an extended period of time.Trinova smells a little less intense than Rocco and Roxie or Pawstruck, but the smell on all is pretty much gone within 72 hours after being blotted up with a damp cloth.

Our Review

This dog-specific enzymatic cleaner is effective on some stains but on others seems to struggle. We love the 1.5 gallon size with the battery-powered sprayer, after having used manual spray bottles your hands will thank you too. However, we do not like how strongly perfumed this cleaner is. This product seems to rely more on masking the odor than eliminating it, and while the manufacturer states that this is to discourage your pet from marking that area again, the smell is not worth it and it does not actually deter dogs, just humans. Other enzymatic cleaners we’ve used smelled strong but the odor dissipates. The smell of this product does not go away even if the urine smell does and we don’t like the idea of having to mask the smell of urine vs. eliminating it. After extensive testing, we also discovered this product leaves behind oily residue, which attracts dirt.

We wanted to like Simply Green because they make other products we like to use. For the price, you get a 32 oz spray bottle plus a gallon refill. Unfortunately, this product is more surfactant than actual enzymatic cleaner, as confirmed by the ingredients. This may work on cleaning new/fresh urine marks or on nonporous surfaces like a linoleum floor- but likely will not eliminate them if they’ve soaked into a surface because the product is just not potent enough. The urine on carpets, clothing, blankets, furniture, etc. will still smell.

Our Review

This is a carbon dioxide cleaner that is just that- a cleaner. It does an outstanding job at cleaning, removing stains, and helping to cut down on odors. However,  because it is not enzymatic it does not chemically break down the offensive-smelling protein. We’d recommend this cleaner for smooth surfaces but not carpets, textiles, or other porous surfaces. The instructions indicate you must use a colorfast towel to blot up stains after use, which is fine, but without extracting or otherwise (chemically) eliminating the compounds causing the odor, it may return, encouraging the cat to return.

Our Review

Nature’s Miracle is a slippery slope for pet owners and we don’t recommend it. The enzymatic cleaning properties of this product are not as strong as others on the market. To make up for this deficiency the manufacturer has added very strong cheap-smelling perfume to the product that masks urine odors and will not dissipate. The only way to really get rid of the buildup it causes after using it on the carpet is to have them professionally cleaned. Nothing says “We have a potty problem” like that lingering strong smell of Nature’s Miracle permeating your home. The perfume oil scents textiles and carpet and hangs around for a very long time. This product also contains petrochemical-based surfactants that are difficult to remove and may make carpets and other surfaces feel cleaner at first but will in time attract more dirt. The ingredients in this formula are also corrosive and can damage furniture, laminate and hardwood floors.

This is an outstanding enzymatic cleaner with a long shelf life due to its dormant bacteria formula. A little goes a long way as this product’s instructions specify to use water first on a carpet or textile surface first, then to add the product and allow it to penetrate while many other cleaners are not strong enough to penetrate on their own much less when diluted this way with water. The smell is pretty strong but it does dissipate and break down over time. You can watch the stains break down under a black light with this one- it’s that effective!

Our Review

We love using orange oil products for other cleaning purposes as the smell is pleasant when diluted properly and citrus does an amazing job. However, what it cannot do is break down the compounds in urine to eliminate the problem completely. The potency of this product certainly may clean stains and temporarily mask the smell, but after a few days, you might find the problem has returned. Additionally, the ingredients in Angry Orange are corrosive and may damage wood floors and other surfaces. Some people are sensitive to the smell of it at this concentration and it may cause irritation to skin and nasal passages- so we would proceed with caution. As a household cleaner? Not bad. For removing urine stains and odor? We don’t think it will have the desired result, especially on older stains.

Our Review

This is another top-notch enzymatic stain and odor eliminator. Stuart Pet Supply’s Odor Eliminator is highly concentrated and penetrates deeply into carpets and porous surfaces to break down the offending substances and compounds on a chemical level. We especially like that fragrance is the last ingredient in this formulation. It does have a strong fragrance but it does not hang around as long as some of the other products we’ve reviewed and there isn’t an oily residue left on upholstered surfaces and carpets. It’s a solid choice for an enzymatic cleaner.

HOW TO CHOOSE A PET URINE REMOVER:

Even after a puppy or kitten has been trained, potty problems in adult animals can arise from health conditions, anxiety, improper crate training/practices, or being left alone too long. Sometimes it just happens with no explanation or reason, especially with cats. Over time, there may be odors or staining to surfaces in your home.  It’s best to address any pet potty issues as soon as they arise to avoid lasting or permanent damage and ensure your pet is healthy. This behavior could indicate serious health issues. The circumstances may vary but once an animal has begun marking or spraying the problem will usually escalate and get worse, especially with multiple animals in the household.

The Science of Pet Urine Odor:

Cat and dog urine is composed of water; urea; uric acid; dissolved ions like sodium, potassium, and chloride; creatinine; and miscellaneous hormones, proteins, and metabolites. Cat urine has an additional amino acid, felinine, that can break down into volatile sulfur-containing compounds (even if you can’t smell them, your cat can; this is why cats urinate outdoors to mark territory). Odors result from the breakdown of urea and uric acid, along with that of proteins and amino acids unique to each species.

It is important to understand the difference between eliminating the substances that create the odor and stains versus cleaning them.

Traditional cleaner use spraying, blotting, and sometimes extraction methods. This is designed to remove the soluble components of urine, including urea and dissolved ions. The complication comes from the uric acid, which crystallizes and is highly insoluble in water, and some of the proteins present in pet urine. Many cleaners do not remove uric acid, which breaks down over time into odor-causing substances. Additionally, it may be more difficult to remove protein and amino acid components of urine, which your pet may be able to smell (and be tempted to re-mark), even if you can’t.

The Right Tools for the Job

So what to buy that will do the job? Pet products have come a long way from just concealing the problem with air fresheners and perfume, but they are still out there sold in major stores. Chances are if you are reading this, you’ve paid good money for a bottle of perfumed “cleaner” that didn’t address the problem.

Locate the problem:

First, what needs to be cleaned up and where? Start with a UV flashlight to help you find problem areas-you might be surprised! Consider where your pet has marked- has he wet on the carpet or on a hard floor? Are the stains old or fresh? Has the urine seeped into crevices such as under molding, thresholds, or into a porous surface such as grout in a bathroom?

Is it secret? Is it safe?

Certain products are unsafe to use on your home’s interior surfaces and then others are suitable for use throughout your entire home. Test the product in an inconspicuous place first if you are not sure.

Other pets and family members in the home:

Do you have other pets in the home such as birds who may become ill from the use of strong cleaning products? While many cleaners say they are “natural” and “non-toxic,” the fragrances used in them can cause adverse effects in humans and pets alike.

Cleaning Methods & Materials:

We’ve narrowed our reviews of pet urine removers into four categories. Some of the products in our review include items from the categories we do not recommend and that is because they are very popular and we wanted our readers to understand why we discourage their use.

Enzymatic Method or Microbe Method: Enzymes break down the odor-causing compounds in pet urine, eliminating the problem

  • Penetrates and chemically breaks down the urine without extraction needed
  • Can be used on most surfaces safely
  • May have strong odors

Cleaning/Deterrent Method (Not recommended): Citrus or orange-based, these cleaners are oil-based and meant to be diluted

  • Cannot be used on wood floors or furniture as it may strip surfaces, essential oils may discolor textiles
  • The odor may be very strong when used indoors
  • Will not break down the odor-causing compounds
  • May clean hard surfaces effectively and reduce stains but will require extraction when used on carpet

Detergent-based Method: Typically a detergent-based cleaner works by making organic stains more soluble in water, allowing them to be rinsed away or extracted with water.

  • May leave residue resulting in increased dirt attraction
  • May not remove the urine compounds that cause odors

Powder Method (Not recommended): Relies on a liquid and powder or powder alone to absorb stains and odors

  • While the powder vacuumed up often takes with it the moisture from fresh urine stains and any activating compound put down first, it will not always remove the odor-causing compounds
  • Time-consuming and messy
  • Will require extraction and almost always leaves a residue that will attract more dirt

“Oxide”-based: Often marketed as “natural” or mineral-based, relies on foaming or chemical reaction to bubble out stains and urine compounds

  • May discolor/bleach surfaces, fabrics, textiles and damage wood and laminate floors
  • Must be blotted up and removed/extracted
  • Peroxide compounds do act on uric acid but results may vary

Potty Pointers:

Remember to always spot-test any new product in an inconspicuous area of your flooring such as under a piece of furniture or in a dark corner.

While most minor pet potty problems can be addressed with a quick response and the appropriate product, major issues may require more powerful means such as steam or extraction cleaning or a professional team to come out and take care of the problem for you. Some homeowners have been able to resolve soaked-in pet urine issues on hardwood floors and furniture using enzymatic cleaners and others have to replace carpet and flooring (and sometimes even sub-flooring) if the problem is bad enough. We’ve seen successful odor elimination in distressed properties with urine-soaked floors where carpet and pad was removed, the subfloor, baseboards were repeatedly treated with enzyme treatment, then new carpet put in.

If the potty problem is sudden or new behavior this may also indicate serious health conditions your pet may be experiencing. Before you become too frustrated with his potty problems, be sure to take him to the veterinarian to be checked out.
