Our Review

The Snuggle Safe Microwave Heating Pad may be small, but it holds heat remarkably well. A single turn in your microwave can provide your dog or cat with up to 10 hours of cozy rest. Since there are no electrical circuits or cords, it’s safe for dogs who like to chew and won’t overheat after long periods of use. As long as you pay attention to the microwave guidelines, overheating should not be an issue for most. The reason Snuggle Safe is our favorite is that it continually gets warmer the more your pet uses it. You can use it for cats, dogs, smaller animals, and even to warm your own hands and feet! If for any reason, the pad does overheat, the thermapol compound is non-toxic and is rarely warm enough to burn your hands.

Our Review

The FurHaven ThermaNAP Self-Warming Pet Mat comes in six colors, including bold leopard print and some neutral options. The mat is extremely soft and holds pets up to 20 pounds comfortably. It also comes in six different sizes with increasing weight limits, so there is an option for all of your pets. The mat is self-warming, which means you don’t have to heat it with electricity or your microwave. Your pet’s body heat helps this mat maintain warmth the entire time they’re using it. The one drawback is that the mat crinkles when your pet steps on it, probably due to the thermal layer inside. While this may not be an issue for most pets, some pets are extremely sensitive to the sound and may not use the mat as a result. Thankfully you won’t have to worry about electricity and other hazards while using this mat.

Colder weather is hard on your outside pets, especially those that are older or have arthritis. Thankfully, K&H Pet Products makes this Lectro-Soft Outdoor Heating Pad so that your outdoor pets can be warm in the winter, too. This mat comes in three different sizes, so even your largest dogs can use it. The electric coils are wrapped in soft Orthopedic foam so that even your oldest dogs are comfortable and warm. While this mat has temperature controls, they are mostly passive, and you cannot adjust the temperature externally. That said, the coils help warm the mat to your pets’ temperature and keep it there with a low wattage internal thermostat. This can help reduce overheating. This is a great option for your dogs that like to chew because the cord is wrapped in steel. They won’t be able to get through it.

Our Review

This heating pad by Petnf comes in three sizes (medium, large, and extra-large). It’s an electric pad that has an in-line temperature regulator that can be adjusted to six different levels. This makes sure that your pet is only getting the heat you want them to. It works well with the timer, which will shut off the heating element after a certain amount of time. You can use this heating pad by itself or as part of a pet bed. However, this pad may not get warm enough. Your dog or cat’s body temperature is higher than ours, so you’d expect that you’d need a higher temperature to keep them warm. This bed has an average high temperature of about 90 degrees, which still keeps your pet warm without the chance of overheating.

The K&H Pet Products Thermo-Kitty Mat may be the right size for your adult cat, but it can also work for small dogs. This mat includes a plush cover that is reversible and easy to wash once the heating pad is removed. The heating element is inside the comfortable layers and works to warm the entire surface. An internal thermostat helps regulate the temperature of the pad and only heats to your pet’s normal body temperature. However, the heating pad inside the cover is much smaller than the size of the cover itself. The mat is just thick enough that the heat doesn’t radiate, meaning there is a warm spot in the middle of the mat that doesn’t spread to the edges. Your cats may prefer this, however. Even your smaller dogs can enjoy the heat provided by the Thermo-Kitty Mat!

This electric heating pad by Lightter includes several safety features to help protect your pet. Seven adjustable temperature levels are displayed in degrees rather than with vague numbers, so it’s easier to see the temperature the pad is warming up to. Note that the temperature control is in Celsius rather than Fahrenheit, so you may need to do some quick math to find the perfect temperature. One major drawback to this electric heating pad is the size. The small circular pad may not be big enough for a large adult cat, let alone your dogs. However, small pets (kittens, puppies, and bunnies) will have no problem finding a comfortable spot to sleep with this mat. The cord is chew-resistant to keep your pet from injuring themselves, and there is an overheating protector to make sure that the mat doesn’t get too warm.

Even your larger kennel dogs deserve to be warm during the colder months. This K&H Pet Products Deluxe Lectro-Kennel Pad is large enough for big breeds and works well in your home or your dog’s kennel. This powerful pad is made of ABS plastic with a comfortable fleece cover that is designed to keep your pet comfy while they warm up. The temperature control is easy to access on the surface of the pad. There are smaller versions available for cats and medium breeds as well. It’s easy to clean both parts of this pad, from the mat itself to the soft fleece cover (which is machine washable). The cord is wrapped in steel to keep your dog from chewing through it, so you don’t have to worry about them getting electrocuted.

This 7-layer pet heating pad from RIOGOO has a lot of amazing safety features to keep your pets safe. Dogs, cats, and rabbits will be comfortable on this thick heating pad, and you can adjust it to each of your animals. The included timer will turn off after a length of time that you decide, anywhere from 1 hour to 8 hours, depending on your preference. Even when it turns for 12 hours, the mat includes an overheat protection sensor so that your dogs, cats, and rabbits never get too warm.

You can set the temperature on this heating pad between 80 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit, so even the coldest days will be comfortable for your pet. Some units may have quality control issues, however. It works best for medium-sized dogs and cats.

Our Review

The Paws & Pals Self-Warming Pet Heating Pad offers a comfortable quilted surface with a non-slip bottom. It will stay put as your dog uses it rather than sliding across your floors. The microfleece cover makes a comfortable bed, and the internal layer helps reflect your dog’s heat back to them. This means your dog is warm as they use it, but never so warm that it’s dangerous or uncomfortable for your pet. The large size of this mat is nice, but it is extremely easy to shed. While it isn’t meant for aggressive chewers, dogs with normal chewing behaviors can easily tear this pad apart in just a few minutes. It isn’t durable enough to stand up to abuse. If your dog chews at all, this isn’t the heating pad for them.

This heating pad by Rest-Eazzzy offers a unique patterned cover with a 7-layer heating pad inside. The cord is bite-proof (though not steel-wrapped). Your dog shouldn’t be able to chew through if they aren’t an aggressive chewer. There are 7 temperature settings and 3 timer settings (3 hours, 6 hours, and 12 hours). The cover is removable and machine washable so it’s easy to clean when it gets dirty. There is only one size available, but the cord is 76 inches long so you can put it wherever your dog likes to sleep. There are only three timer settings, but they are spread evenly enough that there is a setting for everyone. The heat settings are just right for all types of ailments and circumstances.

Our Review

This self-heating pad from K&H Pet Products contains a layer of reflective Mylar film to help amplify and increase your pet’s body heat. There won’t be a huge temperature difference, but it’s enough to keep your pet cozy while they rest. There is only one size so it’s only effective for your smaller dogs and cats, but there are two reversible color options. The pad is made of a soft microfleece that is comfortable and machine washable, though it may begin to pill after it’s washed. This pad is perfect for keeping your pet warm inside but is not effective outdoors during harsh weather. Unlike other self-heating pads, this one doesn’t make a crinkly sound when stepped on. It’s great for pets up to 25 pounds.

Pet Magasin’s Thermal Self-Heated Beds are thin mats that help reflect your pet’s body heat. They are only available in 2-packs, so you get two pads with each purchase (either one large or one small, or two medium-sized mats). The core of the mat is an insulating material that helps it retain heat so your cats and small dogs stay warm. The top of the mat is a smooth, comfortable velvet that your pet will love to lay on. Be aware that the insulating material inside this mat crinkles when walked on. Pet Magasin also states that this mat isn’t machine washable but must be spot-cleaned to ensure that it works as intended. On the plus side, the non-skid backing will ensure that it stays in place.

The K&H Pet Products Extreme Weather Kitty Pad is different from most other pads on our list. It’s made of ABS plastic and includes a free fleece cover to keep your cat comfortable. Instead of an adjustable temperature, this pad uses an internal thermostat to keep the surface temperature consistent. The fleece cover is removable and washable, and you can even add extra padding in the form of blankets or towels. If you have barn cats, feral cats, or small dog kennels, this is the perfect product to keep them warm in extreme weather. It can hold up to the wear and tear of outdoor use, but can also be used for elderly indoor cats and dogs. The max temperature of this pad is 102 degrees Fahrenheit – comfortable enough that your cats will never want to leave!

How to Choose a Pet Heating Pad

A pet heating pad can help your pet recover from surgery, help them stay warm in colder weather, or keep them comfy when their arthritis is acting up. With so many different applications, it can be hard to find the right heating pad for your pet.

Here, we’ll take a look at why you might need one, the different types you can find, and other things you want to be on the lookout for as you shop for a pet heating pad.

Why Do You Need a Pet Heating Pad?

There are multiple reasons why you might need a pet heating pad. Whether your dog is older and suffers from arthritis, is recovering from surgery, or needs some heat for the winter months, pet heating pads can help keep your pets comfortable.

The warmth from heating pads can help your older pets feel more uncomfortable, especially if they have joint problems. The heat improves circulation and reduces stiffness and pain associated with arthritis.

During colder months, dogs who are naturally colder (or with shorter fur) can benefit from heating pads, especially if your home is drafty or your floors are often cold. Heating pads can help reduce shivering and give your pets a cozy place to rest.

Heat therapy is also sometimes required after your pet undergoes surgery. Heat can also be recommended by your vet for certain chronic conditions and health problems. If you are choosing a heating pad for a health condition, make sure to run your choice by your vet before you make a purchase.

Types of Pet Heating Pads

You may think of a heating pad as an electrical device that delivers warmth through heating coils. While this is true for pet heating pads as well, it isn’t the only type. There are 3 different types of heating pads that we’re going to be looking at today, so let’s explain the difference between them in greater detail.

  • An electric pet heating pad most closely resembles one that we would use. Usually, this means that there are metal coils between layers of wool and cloth. When plugged in, these coils radiate heat to warm the surface of the pad and keep your pet warm. As you can imagine, the electric heating pad is the most dangerous type. It is also the most effective at delivering quick heat. Many electric heating pads suffer from overheating issues and have a greater risk of hurting your pet than any other type.
  • Self-heating pads, on the other hand, use your pet’s body heat. It does this by using a layer of reflective film or Mylar material to reflect and amplify your pet’s body heat. This type of heating pad is slower but safer. It uses no electricity or exterior heating source so it’s much less likely to overheat and injure your pet. The drawback is that it might not get very hot at all and it definitely won’t deliver fast heat.
  • The third type of heating pad on our list includes a microwavable component. This type of heating pad is placed in your microwave for a few minutes, warming up a center material so it can deliver and retain heat. Some microwavable heating pads can last for hours without needing to be reheated. This type of heating pad is fast, but it doesn’t deliver consistent heat. There’s always a chance that the thermo material in the middle of the pad will become too hot if it is heated incorrectly. Since it must fit inside your microwave to heat this type of pad, it tends to be smaller as well.

Choose the type that is safest for your pet and puts your mind at ease, but also delivers the amount of heat that your pet requires.

Pet Heating Pad Safety

Many pet owners may be reluctant to try a pet heating pad because of safety risks. Different types of pads may overheat, have electrical shortages, and more. Companies who make pet heating pads have taken this into account and may include several safety features in their products.

Here are just some of the safety features that you should be looking for while shopping for your pet’s heating pad.

  • Auto Shut-Offs. Some heating pads will have a sensor that allows the pad to shut off after a certain amount of time. Alternatively, they might shut off after reaching a certain temperature. Either way, having an automatic shut-off feature can keep the heating pad from overheating and becoming dangerous.
  • Temperature Regulation. Some heating pads have internal thermostats that help regulate temperature. Pads that use this type of safety measure usually read your pet’s body temperature and increase or decrease the temperature of the pad in response. This can keep the pad from burning your pet but may not work in instances where your pet needs warmer temperatures for therapy.
  • Timers. A timer can shut off the heating pad after it has been running for a certain amount of time to prevent overheating and excessive energy use. The timer can also help prevent the bed from overheating when used at smaller time intervals.
  • Steel Cords. One of the major drawbacks to heating pads for your pets to using heating pads for your pets is chewing. If your dog chews through the cord while the pad is in use, they will get electrocuted. It may even cause a fire. A steel-wrapped cord prevents dogs from chewing through it and electrocuting themselves.

There are other alternatives, as well. If you don’t feel comfortable using a heating pad that uses electricity, there are other types of pads. We’ll explore some of these different types below. Remember that non-electric pet beds can still be cozy for your pet!

Things to Consider When Choosing a Pet Heating Pad

Here are some additional features to consider as you shop for a pet heating pad.

Heating Method

We discussed the various heating methods above when we talked about the different types of heating pads. Here is a quick summary of each one:

  • Electric heating pads use coils to heat the surface of the pad. This type of pad needs to be plugged in and is the most dangerous.
  • Self-heating pads reflect your pet’s body heat to keep the pad warm. This isn’t fast, but it is the safest method.
  • Microwavable pads must be heated in the microwave before use. Some can last for hours after being heated.

Choose the method that is most comfortable for you to use and will work best for your dog.

Size

You should try to choose a heating pad that works best for your dog. Pictures can be deceiving, so always choose a pad based on the dimensions rather than any pictures featured in the product listing. If it’s helpful, make sure to measure out an area of the same size to see if your pet can comfortably fit on the pad.

It’s also a good idea to choose a pad that is slightly bigger than your pet so that they have room to sprawl comfortably out. Your pet must be comfortable first and foremost.

Indoor/Outdoor

Some mats are specifically for outdoor use, while some are for indoor use only. Choose whichever best represents where you’ll be using the pad. This is because outdoor pads are generally more durable and able to better stand up to the elements.

Indoor mats can be softer and may have to be plugged in, so they are better suited for use indoors. While you can use outdoor mats inside, it’s generally not advised to use indoor mats outside because they will break down a lot easier. Keep this in mind as you’re shopping for a heating pad.

Temperature Controls

There are multiple different types of temperature controls on pet heating pads.

  • Automatic temperature controls regulate the temperature of the mat based on your pet’s body temperature. This may or may not be pressure activated. Either way, you won’t be able to adjust this temperature yourself. Instead, you must rely on an internal thermostat.
  • In-line remotes give you the power to set the temperature or power level of the heating pad. You can often set timers and other features from the remote as well, but at the very least, you’ll be able to cycle through heat settings.
  • Control panels are rare on pet heating pads, but they occur on some rigid mats. On these options, the temperature controls are present on the surface of the mat in a ‘control panel’ format. It’s easy for your dog to change the temperature just by walking on the panel, so beware!

Cord

Many pets like to chew, and this can be a major issue when it comes to electric heating pads that have cords. Your dog may hurt themselves chewing through the cord when the heating pad is plugged in. If your dog is a chewer, look for heating pads with cords that have anti-chew measures, such as being wrapped in steel.

Dogs or Cats?

Whether the heating pad is made for dogs or cats doesn’t matter in the course of things. The heating pad will work the same no matter the target species. However, it may make a difference in terms of durability and size. Heating pads for cats are generally smaller and less durable than heating pads for larger dogs.

Safety Features

As mentioned above, safety features are one of the most important things to look for when you’re shopping for a pet heating pad. You don’t want your pet to get hurt, and choosing a pad with as many of the safety features listed above as possible (timers, temperature regulation, and automatic shutoffs) will lend itself to a better experience overall.

Waterproof

If you are using the heating pad for your elderly dogs, choose one that is waterproof. This prevents the bed from being damaged if there are accidents while your dog is using it. Most waterproof beds can also have the heating elements removed so that you can wash the cover.
