In addition to its primary purpose as a bike basket, the multi-use Barkbay Pet Carrier Bicycle Basket converts to a backpack, shoulder carrier and car seat as well. Good ventilation is ensured with the roll-up window cover, plus your pet will have a view and not feel trapped. The adjustable opening, removable fleece mat and safety tether complete the attractive features and will provide your canine companion a soft, comfortable yet still economical ride. This one’s a customer favorite.

Our Review

The Snoozer Pet Rider Rear Bicycle Seat keeps the weight to the back of the bike instead of the front ensuring a more stable ride for pets and humans alike. The basket is made only of memory foam, and it does include a tether; however, there have been cases of pups jumping out which is frightening and dangerous. Additional measures need to be taken if you have a “jumper,” so buyer beware.  Still, this is a very popular bike basket. (Bike rack not included but recommended.)

Our Review

Here is a decent, basic bike basket for dogs. The Walky Basket Pet Dog Bike Basket & Carrier can be converted to a pet carrier using the adjustable padded shoulder strap. With sufficient storage, interior tether, and a mesh zipper cover, all of the basics are covered. The biggest complaint is about the brackets, which are plastic and can break after a few uses if not installed properly. (The manufacturer recommends installation by a bike shop, which could be inconvenient, but would provide peace of mind.) On the other hand, additional brackets may be bought separately as replacements or for use on a second bike.

Our Review

Amazon’s No.1 Best Seller is a nifty little bike carrier which continues to get rave reviews from users. With its sturdy, reinforced frame and durable fabric, the Petsfit Dog Basket/Pet Carrier for Bicycle converts from bike basket to portable pet carrier in an instant using the padded shoulder strap. The pockets carry pet and human essentials, and the padded bottom lifts out when cleaning is necessary. The main complaint is that the interior tether is too long, and escape artists risk dangling themselves when they jump out. Either keep the drawstring top closed around the dog’s neck (it’s padded) or shorten the tether. Either way should contain squirmy pups nicely. We recommend this basket only be used for dogs 10 lbs and under as this attaches to your handlebars with straps.

Looking more like a fashion tote bag than a pet carrier, the Petall Dog Bicycle Carrier/Basket is the fashionable way for your precious pooch to accompany you on bike rides.  There’s no interior safety tether, but the drawstring “lid” will do the trick of keeping your frisky pup inside where he/she belongs. In 3 trendy color prints plus solid black, the coordinated double hand strap keeps the eye on style whether you’re shopping or biking. The convenient one-touch easy on/off bracket is replaceable.

Our Review

Here’s another bike basket for larger dogs (up to 28 lbs) that fits on the front!  If you prefer to have your pup up front with you, the Beach & Dog Co. Large Willow Bicycle Basket is the basket for the job. Made of earth-friendly natural willow, this basket is designed around a metal frame for strength and durability with a wood bottom so your dog won’t blow out the bottom. And it’s coated with a clear resin to protect against sun and salt air. The handle is steel-reinforced for added strength as well. The twin tethers will anchor your pup from either side, ensuring a safe, secure ride for you both. You’ll need to put a blanket or folded towel in this basket as there is no cushion provided.

Our Review

Here’s a nice multi-purpose bike basket suitable for smaller pups up to 11 lbs.  The Anzome Carrier Bicycle Basket is enjoyed as much for its pet carrier qualities as it is a grocery basket. It takes a bit of fiddling to get the unit attached to a bike’s handlebars, but it’s easy on, easy off after that.  A nice, serviceable basket all around, and budget-friendly to boot. Might need to put a padded cushion inside for your furry friend, but that’s part of the economy of this basket. We like that it’s waterproof and easy to clean in case it rains outside or your little friend has an accident.

Our Review

Don’t let the horror movie looks fool you – this is a sturdy bike basket for dogs but we don’t feel it’s strong enough for dogs bigger than 10 lbs or so. Attached to handlebars for smaller dogs or the back rack for larger pups, the Sunlite RackTop/Handlebar Pet-Friendly QR Basket  is also a snap to clean – just hose it off and you’re ready to go. While it does come with a padded insert, it’s on the thin side.  You’ll want to consider putting Fifi’s blanket with her for added comfort. The carry handle is thickly padded, which makes this a nice basket for carrying groceries, too.

Our Review

This super-cute bike basket gives you traditional picnic vibes so your pooch can ride in style. It’s made of breathable wicker and lined with faux sheepskin. The interior is very soft and comfortable, as well as removable and machine-washable. If your pet wants to cozy up and lie down, there’s enough space for a cozy siesta. However, keep in mind that this basket can only handle so much weight and is definitely ideal for smaller dogs. On sunny days, you can keep your pet cool with the basket’s matching sunshade.  If it’s not too hot, your pup can also cruise with the top down. This product boasts quick and easy installation, and for some, that may be true. Depending on the bicycle you have, this basket should quickly snap into place with the three-way adjustments on the bracket. However, many people experience issues with securing the basket. There are extra straps included with the product that should help you latch it on correctly. If you don’t, the basket may shake and bounce on your bike ride. This can be very dangerous, so be careful and make sure your pet is safe and won’t fall out.

Our Review

This is a great little basket for a smaller dog. The manufacturer says 13 lbs but we don’t think we’d exceed 10 lbs at the very most and a well-behaved one, as the interior tether can get torn. The bottom of the basket is sturdy so we don’t think your dog will blow out the bottom but the bottom strut holding the basket upright against the fork of the bike and off the tires can get dislodged if your dog gets too excited and if your bike doesn’t have a big fender over the front tire, the basket can get a little shredded coming in contact with the front wheel. We love the overhead canopy for rainy or sunny days. This is not a bad product, we would just like to see the attaching hardware made from more sturdy materials.

Our Review

Another classic from Beach & Dog Co, the Cape May is a rear-mounted basket. We love the wire cage but beware, squirrely or escape artist dogs might get hurt getting a paw stuck in it, so this one is meant for a well-behaved dog. The 1/2 inch thick wood bottom will support a larger dog (or 2 smaller dogs) and the wicker allows air circulation. The faux leather straps are cute but if your dog chews they won’t last long.
The Cape May is meant to fit a rear bike rack up to 6 inches wide. Overall, this is an outstanding option for a smaller/medium sized dog to travel with you with the weight shifted to the rear of the bicycle (bigger dogs on handlebars can be a little insane, trust us on this one!), all in a vintage-style attractive basket.

Our Review

Between the Regular and XL sizes, the DoggyRide DRCCPCXL-GR Cocoon Pet Carrier will support dogs up to 20 pounds. Talk about versatile – this basket can be used both front and back, though to use it on the back of the bike requires the Dutch Dog Britch, purchased separately. It includes a mesh cover and a rain cover, making this an excellent all-weather carrier. It can also be used as a car seat with the attached car seat straps. It even meets airline carrier size requirements. This bike basket seems to have it all! Except for one thing – the attachment bracket itself.  Most of the complaints center around the fact that that the attachment bracket doesn’t come with the basket and must be purchased separately, even though the bracket is shown to be included on the product box. For this, we’ve lowered our rating substantially; however, if you don’t mind purchasing the bracket separately, this basket is one amazing pup carrier.

How to Choose a Dog-approved Bike Basket

Choosing a bike basket for your dog is pretty easy when you remember a few basics.

  1. The size and weight of your dog determine if you can or can’t use a bike basket. This is an ideal way for sharing a bike ride with a small dog. It is not so ideal for a large one. (Imagine your Mastiff sitting on the bike’s handlebars. We couldn’t either.)
  2. Most bike baskets are geared for dogs under 15 pounds. There are a few for slightly larger dogs, but not many. For anything larger than 26 pounds, you’ll need a trailer that attaches to a bike, but that’s another article.
  3. You’ll need to measure your dog sitting up. If you want your little Fido to be able to lie down, you’ll need to measure him in that position as well. But most dogs sit up so they can enjoy the breeze and the view.

Now let’s visit the types of carriers.

Which type?

There are basically three types of carriers: wicker, metal, fabric. Wicker is the most earth-friendly material, plus it has a charming vintage look to it. But don’t be fooled – wicker is very durable and strong. Its downside – it’s difficult to clean if your dog has an “accident.” With wicker’s porous nature, it will take some scrubbing to get messes out of the pores.

Metal baskets look a little scary, but they’re the strongest as well as the easiest to clean. Just hose them off and you’re ready to go. Just be sure your dog doesn’t flip out on bike rides as his leg or paw could get caught in a metal grid and get hurt.

Both wicker and metal baskets have the best air circulation too.

Fabric baskets are the ones with the most bells and whistles. Generally made from tough fabrics like canvas or parachute nylon, they come with padded inserts, pockets, and carry handles or shoulder straps. While fabric baskets look cool, they’re also the least rigid and a dog that’s too heavy could blow out the bottom. In addition, fabric baskets are also the most likely to sway while on the ride, which can be disconcerting for your dog.

Things to consider

  1. As mentioned earlier, weight is not the only consideration when choosing a bike basket. Length (whether the pup is sitting or lying down) is equally important. Measure to be sure. Then measure again.
  2. No matter how durable you think the basket is, bike baskets are not for mountain biking or off-roading. Every tiny bump you feel will be magnified for your precious pup. Not only can this make the ride uncomfortable, but it can also seriously traumatize more nervous breeds. This could be downright dangerous if you hit a bump and sent them airborne. Stick to smooth paths, sidewalks, or streets.
  3. Most baskets come with a safety tether attached, and we recommend choosing one of those; however, if you go with one that doesn’t have a built-in tether, plan on adding your own for your safety as well as your furry friend’s. Accidents happen when a dog launches himself out of a basket, which can happen when he sees a squirrel or another dog. Not only can he injure himself when he lands, he can injure you too when you find yourself suddenly off balance and crashing to the ground. Tether your pup. If your dog has a high prey instinct or extremely nervous, be open to the fact that some dogs are just not going to be safe in a basket.
  4. If your basket of choice doesn’t already come with a washable padded insert, plan on adding your own. This not only adds to your dog’s comfort, but it also absorbs whatever your pup might want to roll around in when you’ve reached your destination. Because as any dog owner knows, dogs will find the raunchiest substance around to roll in.
  5. As with any new dog accessory, conveyance, or contraption, get your dog used to it before using it. Don’t just toss her in and expect her to be ready to roll. Set it on the ground in your home first and let her explore it. Then put it on the parked bike and put her in it. Then, when she’s comfortable, walk the bike around a bit, maybe down the street and around the block. Only then should you attempt to ride with your canine companion in the basket. You’ll both be better off for taking the time to get her adjusted to it.
  6. Understand that having the added weight of a basket plus a dog on the front of your bike will make steering harder. Go slow and get used to it before taking off on a 5-mile ride. Use the back brakes first (before the front), and lean back when braking. Dogs in baskets on the back of a bike add stability. Not so the front.
  7. If you regularly use your bike without your dog along for the ride, choose a basket that detaches easily.
  8. Do not ever ever EVER leave your bike unattended with your pup still in the basket.
