Our Review

Whether you are dealing with a flea infestation or have elected to consistently apply this product throughout the year, the mix of ingredients (Fipronil, (S)-methoprene, and Pyriproxyfen) are unique and compelling. Frontline Gold begins killing fleas and ticks within 30 minutes of application, may eliminate them on your cat within 12 hours, and continues to kill flea eggs and larvae for up to 90 days. Your cat will not have to suffer as many flea bites as the product kills fleas on contact. You and your family will feel safe touching your cat as the formula has been proven safe for human contact immediately upon application. For those living in areas where ticks are prevalent, the product will kill and protect your cat from four species of ticks and lice. The applicator is easy to use and control with a simple push, twist, pull, and squeeze. Frontline offers its Satisfaction Plus Guarantee making you eligible for a refund, replacement with a different product, and a Terminix in-home treatment if necessary. However, this guarantee is only in place if you purchase the product through a veterinarian. The two reasons we did not give this product a 10/10 rating is because it is not waterproof for 24 hours, making it a bit tricky to apply at the right time for outdoor kitties. Additionally, this product may be expired if purchased through sellers on Amazon.

Our Review

Revolution has long been the number one vet-recommended product for flea control. It has the added benefit of controlling ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms, and preventing heartworm disease by repelling mosquitos. Roundworms are the most common intestinal parasite of cats, affecting 25% to 75% of cats, with higher rates in kittens.(1) Ear mites can also be an issue for cats, and preventing heartworm disease (caused by mosquito bites) is especially important in some parts of the world. This product is safe for kittens older than 8 weeks of age, regardless of weight. Activate the applicator by pushing down, removing the cap, and applying the non-greasy formula with a squeeze. Your family won’t need to be separated from your furry family member as the product’s active ingredient, Selamectin, is safe to touch. Unlike our top pick, this product does not contain an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), so it will not provide continued protection from eggs hatching. Finally, for those living in areas where ticks are a concern, you may want to consider another product. We’ve chosen to include Revolution versus Revolution Plus among our top flea products for cats because Revolution Plus contains sarolaner (part of the isoxazoline class of drugs), which may cause tremors and seizures in cats, including those without a history of neurological issues. You can find out more about this issue from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Catego is a combination of three active ingredients: Dinotefuran, Fipronil, and Pyriproxyfen. These ingredients not only kill fleas, eggs, larvae, pupae, four types of ticks, and lice, but it protects your cat by continuing to kill flea eggs and larvae for up to 90 days after application. Like many of the other products, it kills fleas on contact versus through fleas biting your cat. It comes in a low-volume tube with an easy-to-use applicator. It is also quick drying and non-greasy. Unfortunately, the product does not kill ear mites, and it is only water-resistant versus waterproof. Adults and children should exercise caution during the application of the liquid and until the area is dry as it can cause skin and eye irritation through touch. Follow the manufacturer’s directions if contact does occur.

Our Review

Vectra is relatively new to the market and kills fleas, eggs, larvae, and pupae. Fleas do not have to bite your cat to die, and 98% of fleas on your cat die off within the first 6 hours. This product contains an insect growth regulator (IGR), which continues killing flea eggs and larvae for up to 90 days. The application is simple and doesn’t require scissors. Simply push down, then pull up and apply to the nape of the neck. The applicator also has a rounded end, making it less likely to cause any skin abrasions. The product is quick-drying, non-greasy, and waterproof. However, adults and children should exercise caution to not touch the application area until dry as it can cause skin and eye irritation. Follow the manufacturer’s directions if contact does occur. If you are also treating to kill or prevent ticks, mites, lice, and internal parasites, we recommend a different product.

Our Review

Cheristin is the only flea drop product to contain Spinetoram, which received a Presidential Green Chemistry award for low environmental impact on the agricultural industry in 2008. Your cat will be relieved that the product begins working in 30 minutes and extinguishes all adult fleas on your cat within 12 hours. Although it is effective for up to 45 days, veterinarians and the manufacturer recommend applying a dose every 30 days to ensure coverage. Another unique attribute is that this product is the same size for cats and kittens more than 8 weeks of age and weighing more than 1.8 lbs. Even a cat as large as 20 lbs will is protected with a single application. The product is quick-drying, non-greasy, easy to apply for you, and gentle on your kitty. Unfortunately, it only addresses adult fleas, not eggs, larvae, nor pupae. It is also not waterproof nor water-resistant. Adults and children should use caution to not touch the product until dry as it can cause skin and eye irritation.

Our Review

The broad-spectrum coverage of Bravecto Plus is a definite advantage in parasite control as it makes it easier for you to manage and less stressful for your cat. The killing speed is excellent, with 100% of fleas present on your cat killed within 8 hours. And the efficacy of 60 days means your cat is protected for longer than most flea products available. Coverage for two types of ticks, roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms, means you do not have to treat your cat with separate wormers and tick protection. Roundworms are the most common intestinal parasite of cats, affecting 25% to 75% of cats, with higher rates in kittens.(1) What we do not like about the product is 1) fleas must bite your cat to receive the parasiticide, 2) it is not waterproof or water-resistant, and 3) Furalaner, one of the active ingredients and a member of the isoxazoline class of drugs, has recently been known to cause tremors and seizures in cats, including those without a history of neurological issues. You can find out more about this issue from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Adults and children should use caution to avoid touching the application area for two hours as it can cause skin and eye irritation.

Our Review

This product offers protection from 6 common parasites in one monthly application. It is effective in killing fleas, black-legged or deer ticks, gulf-coast ticks, American dog ticks, ear mites, roundworm and hookworm eggs, and preventing mosquito bites which can lead to heartworm disease. The speed of kill is a bit slower than some at 98% of your cat’s fleas killed within 48 hours. Some studies do show faster velocity of flea elimination with this product. The applicator is simple to use and administered a quick-drying, small volume of liquid. The area of application is safe to touch, but the manufacturer recommends washing your hands if contact with the product should occur before it is dry. One of the active ingredients, Sarolaner, is part of the Isoxazoline class of drugs and may cause tremors and seizures in cats, including those without a history of neurological issues. You can find out more about this issue from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Additionally, this product is not waterproof or water-resistant.

This product combines two ingredients to kill adult fleas, on contact, within 12 hours, prevent mosquitos from biting your pet, killing and protecting from ear mites, and killing and protecting against roundworms and hookworms. The manufacturer has also measured the effectiveness of killing new fleas once the existing fleas have died off and determined that new fleas are killed within 2 hours. This product does not kill ticks and is not water-resistant. If you live in an area where ticks are a concern, or if your cat goes outdoors often, you may want to choose another flea drop treatment. Children should not be allowed to touch the application are for at least 2 hours, and anyone who comes in contact with the liquid should wash their hands with soap and water.

Unique combination of ingredients offers pet parents reassurance that product will continue to kill flea eggs past day 60, outperforming Frontline Plus. This formula essentially paralyzes the fleas, rendering them unable to take a bite out of your pet, lay eggs, or move away from the parasiticide. It is quick drying, waterproof and resists becoming ineffective due to shampooing. The insect growth regulator (IGR) prohibits eggs and larvae from becoming viable for up to 60 days. Indoxocarb is the main active ingredient in this product. According to Today’s Veterinary Practice, although this product is normally well tolerated, some report seizures and other neurological signs. Adults and children should use caution to avoid touching the application area until dry.

Bravecto is a newer product designed to provide flea elimination and protection for up to 90 days. It also kills black-legged ticks for 12 weeks, and American dog ticks and lone-star ticks for eight weeks. Its velocity is excellent, taking only 8 hours to eliminate 100% of the fleas on your cat. This product is the only one on the market that offers such a fast and long-lasting flea elimination. The disadvantages of this product are that 1) fleas must bite your cat to receive the parasiticide, 2) it is not waterproof or water-resistant, 3) kittens and cats must be at least 6 months of age before using, and 4) Furalaner, one of the active ingredients and part of the Isoxazoline class of drugs, may cause tremors and seizures in cats, including those without a history of neurological issues. Like Activyl, his formula essentially paralyzes the fleas, rendering them unable to take a bite out of your pet, lay eggs, or move away from the parasiticide. One of the ingredients, Imidacloprid, has a relatively fast speed of kill and is considered one of the safer parasiticides. The other active ingredient, Pyripoxyfen is an insect growth regulator (IGR) prohibits eggs and larvae from becoming viable for up to 90 days. The manufacturer claims the product is waterproof although we did find some research that indicates it may be susceptible to break down in water. Adults and children should use caution to avoid touching the application area until dry.

Only Natural uses peppermint oil, thyme oil, and geraniol as their active ingredients. Unfortunately, the claims that these products kill or repel fleas, ticks, and mosquitos are unsubstantiated by empirical research data. Also, per the Pet Poison Hotline, essential oils, including peppermint oil, can cause severe adverse reactions, even if applied according to the product label. These ingredients can also cause adverse reactions in humans, so exercise caution when using. If you are dedicated to using natural ingredients, please consult your veterinarian to ensure your pet’s safety. Understand you will likely need to be committed to using multiple products such as natural shampoos, sprays, and powders continually with no guarantee you will be able to get the flea problem under control.

These products all contain the active ingredients of Fipronil at 9.8% and (S)-methoprene at 8.80%. They are both known to be effective in killing fleas and deer ticks and preventing flea infestations by killing flea eggs up to 90 days after application. These products promise fleas will begin to die within 48 hours. However, none of these manufacturers indicate what percentage of fleas will be killed over time. Unlike some of the products listed here, these products are waterproof. Some claim to be safe to apply to pregnant and nursing cats. However, we advise you to consult with your veterinarian before using any of these topical flea products if your cat is breeding, pregnant, nursing, or has pre-existing health conditions. The only difference between these products is cost. All of the applicators are either plastic with a snap-off top or a plastic applicator that requires scissors to cut the top off the tube. Adults and children should use caution to not touch the product after application until dry as it can cause skin and eye irritation. Refer to manufacturer warnings for additional information.

How to Choose:

Flea drops are the most common type of flea control offered on the market for cats. We found more than 30 products available for purchase, both with and without a veterinary prescription. In reviewing the products, we found many could be combined into various classes based on ingredients. Carefully considering flea products’ active ingredients is critical when choosing the best flea drop for your cat. While we’ve provided thorough reviews, we’ve also attempted to explain the various classes of parasiticides so you can make more informed decisions. We’ve also attempted to address some common questions you may have regarding these products in the guide below.

Why should I care about the active ingredients in flea drops?

Some flea products, for example, Etofenprox, are part of a class of drugs called pyrethroids. Some studies, such as one from the Department of Entomology, University of California Riverside, show these products may be slightly less effective.

Flea drops containing fluralaner, and sarolaner are part of the isoxazoline class of drugs. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, these products have been known to cause tremors and seizures in cats, including those without a history of neurological issues.

One product, Cheristin for cats, contains Spinetoram, the only parasiticide to receive a Presidential Green Chemistry award for low environmental impact on the agricultural industry in 2008.

Products containing (S)-methoprene and Pyriproxyfen are known as Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) and help control flea populations by sterilizing eggs for up to 90 days after application.

I don’t like to apply chemicals to my cat. Aren’t natural alternatives a better choice?

“Essential oils, including peppermint oil, citrus oils (e.g., limonene, linalool), cinnamon oil, and lemongrass oil, can be found in some topical flea control products. Because these ingredients are derived from plants and touted as natural or organic alternatives to chemical insecticides, many pet owners assume they are very safe. However, both dogs and cats can have serious adverse reactions to some of these ingredients, even when the product is used according to label directions. Side effects can include skin irritation, agitation or lethargy, vomiting, tremors, and seizures.” says the Pet Poison Hotline. We’ve found no empirical evidence that products with all-natural ingredients are effective at repelling fleas, and none of the all-natural products we reviewed claim to kill fleas.

What are other factors essential to consider in purchasing a flea drop product?

Speed of kill, duration of efficacy, safety, and whether or not the drop is available over the counter or through a veterinarian are all factors to consider.

Why are speed of kill and length of efficacy important?

The best flea drops kill the vast majority of fleas in 12 hours or less. Most products available will continue to remain effective for up to 30 days. Bravecto and Bravecto Plus products are effective between 60 and 90 days. The speed at which the product kills fleas is especially crucial if facing a flea infestation. How long the flea drops remain effective determines how often it is applied. Some pet parents prefer to use flea medication monthly because it’s easier to remember, while other pet parents choose to apply products fewer times each year.

What do you mean by “safety”?

By safety, we refer to the minimum age and weight at which a product may be applied. It is imperative to remember that not all products are alike. Please read the instructions and apply per the manufacturers’ recommendations. Some products may be used to kittens as young as eight weeks of age while others advise waiting until kittens are six months of age before applying that particular product. Some flea drops are appropriate for kittens weighing 1.5 pounds or more, while others are only appropriate for cats weighing more than 5 pounds.

Another factor to consider is the safety of you and your family. Some products, such as Frontline Gold and Revolution, are safe to touch. Some products, such as Bravecto, require a waiting period of 24 hours or until the product is dry before it is safe to pet your cat on the application area. All product information advises people to wash their hands with soap and water after application and coming in contact with the liquid. Please refer to the manufacturer’s label warnings for guidance in this area.

Finally, please be aware that your cat and other pets should not ingest any flea drop product. It is recommended by most manufacturers that you isolate your cat from other pets for 24 hours or until the product is dry to prevent accidental ingestion. The two exceptions to this are Frontline Gold and Revolution–these products do not require separation.

Which products are safe for pregnant and lactating cats?

While some products such as Frontline Gold state they are safe for pregnant and lactating cats, we advise you always to contact your veterinarian for guidance. Your vet can help you assess the risks and benefits so you can make a more informed decision.

My cat has a health condition, which products are safe for her/him?

Some flea drop products are safer than others. Please consult with your veterinarian when choosing a product to ensure you have the best guidance possible for your cat’s case.

Are products available through my veterinarian better than products I can buy at Chewy.com or Amazon?

Not necessarily. For example, we’ve rated Frontline Gold as our number one product. It is available for purchase without a prescription, while our number two product, Revolution, requires a prescription. If treating fleas, ticks, and lice, an over the counter product will likely provide you with your desired coverage. However, if you are looking to protect your cat from heartworm (passed through mosquito bites), roundworm, hookworm, or ear mites, a product prescribed by your veterinarian would be a better choice.

Beware! We’ve found some products, such as ProVectra, listed on Amazon have arrived to consumers already expired or with expiration dates blacked out.

Frontline Gold offers a Satisfaction Plus Guarantee, making you eligible for a refund, replacement with a different product, and a Terminix in-home treatment if necessary. However, you must purchase the product from a veterinarian to be eligible for this guarantee.

Do fleas have to bite my cat to die?

With a few exceptions, flea drop products kill fleas upon contact. The exceptions are Bravecto products, which do require a flea to bite to release the parasiticide.

I’ve used flea products in the past, but none seem to work. Why?

The most common reason flea products do not work is that they are not applied consistently. For a flea infestation, it takes a minimum of 90 days to effectively eradicate fleas using not only flea treatments for your pet, but also flea treatments for the environment. It is much simpler, more affordable, and less stressful to be consistent and apply flea products monthly (or every 60 to 90 days for Bravecto products). Your cat is counting on you to keep him or her comfortable and free of parasites.
