How To Choose
Material: When you’re considering a dog diaper, you need to know if it’s going to do its job. This is almost completely dependent on the material. It needs to be absorbent enough that urine doesn’t put your dog’s health at risk.
Wetness Indicator: Knowing if your dog has done their business in their diaper can be tricky. However, there are some options out there that have indicators in place so that you don’t have to take them off to check. It’s a very useful feature that can save you some trouble!
Design/Fit: The diaper products out there for canines come in a variety of designs and fits. Many of them are specific to either males or females, while others can be used for both. For females, a more traditional diaper is used and for males, a belly band design is preferred.
Points of Adjustment: It’s important to consider the points of adjustments and how easy the diaper is to take on and off. The last thing you want is to have issues putting a diaper on your dog and taking it off.
Color Choice: Making sure your dog looks good while wearing a diaper many not be the most important (in terms of function), but if you don’t want a dog diaper to resemble that of a baby diaper, then this is something you really need to look into.
Types of Diapers
Disposable: Obviously, disposable diapers are ones you can just throw away–no questions asked! Though this may make clean up for you easier, it leaves a much bigger environmental footprint and means more waste will end up in a landfill. Additionally, although they may be a smaller investment up front, over time, disposable diapers will run up your bill.
Washable: This is a more eco-friendly diaper solution that can help keep costs down. Washable diapers typically come with a microfiber core designed to absorb any accidents your dog may have. The downside with these is that you will have to wash them after a single use (and we recommend bleach!).
Male Diapers Vs. Female Diapers
It’s important to realize that you will need to get different type of diapers according to the sex of your dog.
Female Dog Diapers: The diapers for female dogs are designed with their anatomy in mind. Female dogs may encounter health issues just like a male dog, but you also can have the added monthly concern of your dog being in heat (if they aren’t spayed).* A female dog that is menstruating can be messy, but fortunately, female dog diapers are designed to help with that. This type of diaper typically resembles a traditional diaper, expect for the tail hole.
Belly Bands: This is a design of diaper with male dog anatomy in mind. They wrap around the midsection of a dog to give them looser coverage. This design in particularly also helps them keep clean and is very easy to put on.
*We always recommend spaying or neutering your pets when possible.
Dog Diapers vs. Human Diapers
This may seem like a silly thing, but it’s a question we get more often than you’d think: can you just use a human diaper for your dog? Though human diapers may have the ability to contain the accidents your dog may have, it doesn’t make it a good fit.
Dog diapers are designed to fit the anatomy of dogs. If you choose to use a human diaper, you’ll need to cut a hole for their tail, which could compromise the whole diaper. Additionally, you’ll find that the sizing is off and that, often, human diapers are unable to contain doggy messes.
We recommend sticking with diapers designed for dogs except maybe in the most urgent of emergencies.
