Our Review

Many dog owners love this product because of its ability to remove large amounts of hair from undercoats during washing. This shampoo is free from parabens and artificial colors but contains preservatives and fragrance that cause skin irritations in some dogs. Many owners find this product significantly reduces shedding in dogs after just one use and is effective for dogs of all breeds and coat types. The best results, however, require this shampoo to be combined with the FURminator de-shedding conditioner and brush. Additionally, some owners find that this shampoo does not reduce shedding in their dogs even after multiple uses. The omega-3 and 6 fatty acids result in soft, shiny coats and the tropical scent leaves dogs smelling great. This shampoo contains artificial ingredients and causes sores and infected skin in some dogs. The de-shedding effects dissipate quickly, with some owners finding their dog shedding excessively again a few days after use.

Our Review

This all-natural shampoo includes moisturizing plant-based cleansers and omega-6 fatty acids. It also features shea butter, which is rich in omega-3 and vitamin E, and panthenol, a source of pro-vitamin B5. This shampoo effectively removes large amounts of the undercoat and strengthens the roots of the fur which prevents breakages. With no artificial ingredients, it won’t irritate your dog’s skin. The strong fragrance can be overwhelming but fades after a day or two. This product significantly reduces shedding in their dogs, particularly during spring and summer. Like Furminator, this shampoo has a respective conditioner and brush and is most effective when these products are used together. Simply brushing your dog after use, however, will result in noticeable reductions of shedding as well as a soft and shiny coat.

Our Review

This shampoo is made from natural moisturizing ingredients including vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids to help control your dog’s shedding. While not effective in every dog, this shampoo significantly reduces shedding in their dogs after just one use. Because it does not contain any harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances, this mild shampoo is safe to use on dogs with allergies and skin sensitives. The lack of strong fragrance, however, means that this shampoo will not leave your dog smelling excessively fresh or fruity, may be disappointing if you like a lingering odor on your dog after a bath. This shampoo does not lather easily, which makes bathing difficult, especially for larger dogs. Despite its shortcomings, this shampoo contains many beneficial ingredients to reduce shedding and support healthy skin and coats. With vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, this shampoo removes unhealthy hairs, soothes and nourishes skin, and reduces excessive shedding.

This de-shedding shampoo contains many ingredients that nourish the skin such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, D, and E, oatmeal and wheat proteins, and antioxidants. Like the FURminator, this shampoo contains artificial ingredients including colors and fragrances, however, it does not tend to cause any skin irritations in dogs. The ingredients in this shampoo can really help a dog’s skin and coat health. Like most shedding control shampoos, this product works by removing fur from the undercoat during use, making it easier to brush away excess hairs and resulting in a reduction of hair loss after the bath. It can take up to a month to notice results.

Our Review

This oatmeal based shampoo is formulated to soothe dry, itchy skin while vitamins and fruit oils work to reduce shedding. The unnatural fragrance in this shampoo is pleasing to many owners but can cause skin and eye irritations in dogs, especially those with allergies. While some owners find the oatmeal used in this shampoo relieves their dog’s itchy skin, many others find other ingredients in the shampoo trigger allergic reactions and exacerbate existing conditions. This product contains a mild scent that is not overwhelming and can be beneficial for dogs and owners who have sensitivities to strong fragrances. This shampoo does well to control shedding in many dogs, with many owners finding their dogs shedding significantly less after the first use. For many others, however, this shampoo causes severe reactions and has little to no effect on the amount of hair shed by the dog.

Our Review

This shampoo features a lime and coconut scent and includes vitamins E and B5 as well as omega-3 and 6 fatty acids to support skin health and reduce shedding. Many owners are delighted with how soft and pleasant smelling their dogs’ fur is after using this product. Owners whose dogs shed excessively find this shampoo works wonders to remove excess hairs and thin undercoats which results in noticeably less fur floating around the house. The fragrance is very appealing to many owners but does not last very long, as it fades within a day. Because it is not all natural, however, this shampoo can cause skin irritations or allergic reactions in some dogs. Additionally, some owners find this product has no effect on their dogs’ shedding and use it just because they enjoy the scent and how it shines and softens their dogs’ coats.

Our Review

This shampoo contains more moisturizing ingredients than most other shed control shampoos, resulting in exceptionally soft fur and healthy skin. The vitamin B5 and aloe vera nourish the coat and significantly reduce shedding in many dogs. Like many other products on this list, this shampoo loosens excess fur from the undercoat, allowing for easy removal during and after the bath. Similar to Tropiclean, this shampoo contains an artificial fragrance that many owners enjoy but that can cause skin irritations in some dogs. Many owners also find that, like Burt’s Bees, it is very difficult to work up a lather with this shampoo, which can make it difficult to bathe a dog without using a large amount of the product. Although it is not effective for every dog, many owners find this shampoo works well to reduce shedding while improving the overall health of their dogs’ coats.

Our Review

This shampoo can provide a deep cleaning even for dogs with extra thick and fluffy fur. Like many other shampoos, it is effective in removing large amounts of fur from a dog’s undercoat, although it works best the second time it’s used. This shampoo contains small amounts of nourishing ingredients to condition skin and fur, including omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, vitamin E, and aloe vera. However, like most Nature’s Miracle’s products, it is very vague about what makes up the bulk of this product- it clearly contains artificial ingredients as well, such as fragrances and preservatives, and some dogs develop dry skin after use. It’s almost impossible to find SDS sheets for Nature’s Miracle products and if you can, they are as vague as the ingredient list on the bottle. We don’t recommend.

Vitamins E and B5 work together with aloe vera and other moisturizing ingredients in this shampoo to promote healthy skin and coats in dogs while reducing shedding. Many owners find that this shampoo helps remove large quantities of fur from their dogs’ undercoats and significantly reduces the amount of hair shed around the house. The mandarin fragrance is pleasing to many owners but can be too strong for those with sensitive noses. Some owners complain the scent does not last long on their dogs, usually dissipating within a day. This shampoo contains artificial colors and fragrances, but they are very mild and do not usually cause any irritations to a dog’s skin. While not effective for all dogs, this shampoo can help reduce shedding in many dogs, though it does not contain omega-3 or omega-6, so is not as effective as other products.

This shampoo contains omega-3 and vitamin E as well as other skin nourishing ingredients to improve skin health and reduce shedding. Many owners like that this shampoo is easy to massage into their dog’s fur and does not require a large amount to lather the entire body. This product contains moisturizing ingredients as well as antioxidants that result in soft and shiny fur and healthy skin. As far as reducing shedding, many owners find their dog’s seasonal blowouts are much more manageable with the use of this product and that it can help keep shedding to a minimum all year round. While this product works well for many dogs, it contains artificial fragrances and colors as well as sulfates, which can cause some dogs to develop irritations after using this shampoo such as itchy skin or bald spots.

This shampoo is unique in that it includes goat milk in addition to other commonly found nourishing ingredients such as vitamins E, B5, A, and aloe vera. It also includes artificial fragrance and preservatives, but they are in low enough quantities so as to not cause skin irritations. Many owners find this product greatly reduces shedding in their dogs and that after using this shampoo, they noticed much less fur on their floors and furniture. This shampoo does not contain any omega fatty acids, so it will not be as effective as other shed control shampoos, such as Earthbath or Magic Paws, however, because it contains vitamin E as well as pro-vitamin B5, many owners find this shampoo does a good job at reducing shedding. This shampoo has a mild tropical scent that many owners enjoy and is not overpowering like some other shampoos such as Top Performance Shed Control. Its natural and nourishing ingredients support healthy skin and coats and do not dry out or irritate a dog’s skin.

Although this shampoo does not contain omega-3 or 6, it has both vitamin E and pro-vitamin B5 that nourish skin and fur. Many owners find this product removes most, if not all, of their dog’s undercoat resulting in almost no shedding after use. As with most shed control shampoos, this product works best when owners brush their dog after bathing, to remove the loosened excess fur. The shampoo does not lather well and may require using a lot of shampoo to fully cover your dog. Many owners find this product is more effective at reducing shedding than many other brands, including FURminator. Similar to the Natural Care shampoo, this product contains artificial fragrance and preservatives but does not usually cause any irritations. The scent is very mild, so it is unlikely to cause issues for dogs or owners who are sensitive to strong fragrances, but unlike the Burt’s Bees, it leaves a noticeable fresh smell on your dog.

This shampoo does not contain any of the common ingredients found in most shed control shampoos, relying on lemongrass and sage extracts as well as aloe vera to support healthy skin and fur. Despite this, many owners find it to be effective in reducing shedding. This product lathers well and rinses out easily, making it easy to wash dogs of all sizes without having to use a large amount of shampoo. This product is marketed as being safe for dogs with allergies, however, it contains several synthetic ingredients that cause irritations in sensitive dogs. Sulfate, fragrance, freshness assurer, FDA approved colors, and cocamidopropyl betaine are all included in the list of ingredients. Many owners find their dogs develop dry skin, rashes, and skin infections after using this shampoo. Many owners also complain that this shampoo does not soften a dog’s fur and will not leave a dog smelling clean.

This shampoo contains all natural ingredients including omega-3 and 6 fatty acids and vitamin E, which nourish skin and strengthen fur to reduce shedding. Similar to other de-shedding shampoos, this product loosens and removes excess fur from the undercoat. Many owners find this shampoo removes more fur than any other they have tried and that it results in noticeable reductions in shedding. Like Burt’s Bees, this shampoo is very gentle on your dog;’s skin, but while Burt’s Bees can be difficult to use because it does not produce any lather, this shampoo lathers well and is easily rinsed off. This shampoo is different from most others in that it must be diluted 32:1 with water before use. While this can be inconvenient, it also means that one bottle will last a long time. Many owners enjoy using this shampoo because it not only reduces shedding in their dogs, but also shines and softens their fur, maintains healthy skin, and does not cause any irritations.

Many owners are pleased with how soft and pleasant smelling their dog’s fur is after using this product and most find it to be effective in reducing shedding. Because it lacks omegas and vitamins, however, this shampoo is not as effective as many other products. This product also has more ingredients than most other shedding shampoos, including some that are known to cause skin irritations such as PEG-120. This shampoo is used by many professional dog groomers because of its ability to reduce shedding, its pleasant and long lasting fragrance, and its mild ingredients. Owners find that after using this shampoo, shedding is reduced by at least half. This shampoo works best when paired with the EZ out conditioner. This shampoo is made of all natural ingredients and features pro-vitamin B5 and vitamin E to nourish skin and fur. Similar to the EZ Out shampoo, this product is used by professional groomers who find their clients report significant reductions in their dogs’ shedding. Because it is made with all natural ingredients, this shampoo can be used on dogs with sensitive skin or allergies without causing any negative reactions. Many owners who use this shampoo find it to be very effective in keeping their dogs’ shedding under control, and claim it works better than many other shampoos they have tried. This shampoo is highly concentrated, so it must be diluted with water at a ratio of 50:1. This process allows the shampoo to last a long time, but some owners complain it is inconvenient and can be difficult to measure out. Besides helping to reduce excessive shedding, the nourishing ingredients in this shampoo result in soft, shiny coats, and the pleasant fragrance lasts for a long time.

Best Products Best Dog Shampoo for Shedding
Product Name Best for Rate
Earthbath Shed Control Best Overall 10
Coat Handler Undercoat Control Best Concentrate 9
Wild Animal Liquid De-shedder Best Concentrate 9

How to Choose:

To be effective, a de-shedding shampoo must contain ingredients that will nourish the skin and improve overall skin and coat health. These ingredients include omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, vitamin E, and pro-vitamin B5. The shampoo should not include any harsh chemicals or artificial ingredients, as these can cause skin irritations or allergic reactions. In addition to ingredients, the shampoo should be easy to massage into your dog’s coat and should be able to cover the whole body without having to use much of the product. The shampoo’s fragrance should be pleasant and should leave a dog smelling fresh and clean.

Who should buy dog de-shedding shampoo?

All dogs shed to a certain extent, but some breeds tend to shed more than others. Shedding can also vary seasonally, becoming more intense during certain times of the year. If your dog seems to leave a trail of fur wherever he walks or you find yourself constantly cleaning dog hair off your furniture, clothes, and floors, a de-shedding shampoo will be a great benefit to you and your dog. While these shampoos are specially designed to curtail excessive shedding, they also moisturize and nourish a dog’s skin and coat, which can help your pooch feel and look his best. Whether you are looking to reduce seasonal shedding or wanting to keep shredding to a minimum all year long, a de-shedding shampoo is a great tool to have.

What to Look For:

There are several important factors to consider when choosing a de-shedding shampoo for your dog. These factors include the ingredients used, the concentration of the shampoo, the consistency, and the fragrance. In the guide below, you can read about each of these factors in detail to help you decide what type of dog de-shedding shampoo is right for you and your dog.

Ingredients:

One of the most important factors to consider when selecting a dog de-shedding shampoo is the ingredients that are included in the product. There are many different brands that offer de-shedding shampoos, and they each use a unique formula with different ingredients. With so many options, it can be hard to decide which product is the best for your dog. The first thing you want to look for is a shampoo that uses all-natural, or at least, mostly natural ingredients. This is because artificial ingredients can irritate your dog’s skin and cause allergic reactions. Artificial ingredients are also unnecessary, as they do not provide any benefits to your dog’s health and can cause serious reactions in some dogs. When selecting a de-shedding shampoo for your dog, look for shampoos that use natural ingredients such as aloe vera, vitamin E, pro-vitamin B5, and omega-3 and 6 fatty acids. These ingredients nourish the skin, providing relief for dogs who have dry, itchy, or sensitive skin without causing any adverse reactions. In addition, these ingredients will strengthen the hair follicles, which will reduce breakages and thus, reduce shedding.

Using a product with natural ingredients will provide the same benefits as those that contain artificial ingredients without the risk of causing negative reactions in your dog. Not many de-shedding shampoos are all-natural, however, and often include at least some artificial ingredients such as preservatives or pearlizing agents. Although they are artificial, these ingredients are usually in low enough quantities that they do not cause any issues for your dog’s skin. While it is always a good idea to select a shampoo that uses only natural ingredients, many owners find their dogs do well using shampoos that contain a few artificial ingredients. Some owners prefer to use artificially created shampoos because they claim the chemical cleaners are more effective at removing dirt, odors, and stains than natural shampoos. As long as a shampoo does not contain a long list of artificial ingredients or any harsh or harmful chemicals, it should be safe to use on dogs with healthy skin. There are some artificial ingredients, however, that you should always avoid, due to their high likelihood of causing skin irritations and allergic reactions in dogs.

These ingredients include:

Sulfates

It is always a good idea to avoid this ingredient because it can cause damage to your dog’s fur. Sulfates are commonly found in shampoos because they are used as lathering agents which can help to remove dirt and excess oils from the skin and fur. In doing so, however, sulfates will often dry out the hair follicles which leads to weakened roots and an increase in breakages. Sulfates also buildup over time on your dog’s coat and can cause major irritations to the skin when they are in large enough quantities. In addition to this, sulfates have been known to be contaminated with dioxane, a carcinogen.

PEG

This ingredient is found in many shampoo products and stands for Polyethylene Glycol. When listed in the ingredients, it is often followed by a number. This number refers to their molecular weight. This chemical is used to create the texture of a shampoo product. It should be avoided because not only is it damaging to those with sensitive skin, but it is also often contaminated with heavy metals and even carcinogens.

Fragrance

When selecting a shampoo for your dog, it is important to look to see where the fragrance of the shampoo comes from. Many shampoos include the word fragrance in their list of ingredients, without specifying how the fragrance was created. This is a problem because many times, unspecified fragrances consist of harsh chemicals that produce a pleasant smell but can harm your dog’s skin. It is always a good idea to choose a shampoo that uses natural ingredients to produce its scent. Natural scents will often have a more mild aroma than chemically produced ones, but this is often preferred by owners. Although artificial fragrances may be more appealing in the bottle, they often result in an overwhelming smell when applied to a dog’s coat.

Concentration

Another important factor to consider when selecting a dog de-shedding shampoo is the concentration. While most shampoos are formulated to be safely applied directly to your dog’s fur, other products have a high concentration and must first be diluted with water. Many owners prefer a shampoo that can be directly applied to their dog’s skin, but selecting a higher concentration shampoo has its advantages. By diluting the shampoo before use, you can greatly extend the life of the product and can go much longer without running out than you could with traditional shampoos. Shampoos with higher concentrations also tend to be used by professional dog groomers, both for their longevity and their ability to thoroughly clean a dog’s coat and remove tough stains.

Consistency

It is important when selecting a dog de-shedding shampoo to look for a product with the right consistency. Some shampoos tend to have a very thin, watery consistency that is not effective in penetrating a dog’s fur. The ideal shampoo will have a consistency that is not too thin or too thick, but somewhere in the middle. Having the right consistency will help a shampoo to be easily massaged into a dog’s fur, as well as being easily rinsed off with water. Unfortunately, it can be hard to determine the consistency of a shampoo until you use it on your dog, but this information can often be found by reading online reviews of the product before purchasing it.

Fragrance

Although it may seem trivial, choosing a fragrance that is pleasing to you is very important since you will have to smell it for a long time after you bathe your dog. While it is always a good idea to choose a shampoo that uses natural fragrances, there are so many different options, it can be hard to decide which one is the best for you and your dog. Which fragrance to choose is a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer fruity scents while others enjoy a refreshing lavender aroma. There are also options for those who prefer no scent at all. No matter what fragrance you choose, always make sure you know what ingredients are used to create it.
