Best Dog Litter Box

Best Dog Litter Box

After 65 hours of research & testing, we’re comfortable recommending the Fresh Patch Disposable Dog Potty with Real Grass as the best indoor dog litter box currently on the market in spring 2020. The Fresh Patch is our top pick for the second year running due to being environmentally friendly than puppy pads, being available in several sizes, and how easy it is to train a dog to use it. For owners who want their dogs to go both indoors and outdoors (preferably outdoors) the Fresh Patch is the best bet.  Read further to find out what we found out when testing & reviewing all current models.

Some dogs need to go to the bathroom indoors, whether it’s for health reasons or owner preference. We’ve chosen our favorite doggy litter box solutions. Most indoor potty dogs are smaller breeds and indoor dog potty solutions are generally geared for them but there are a few exceptions for larger dogs.

We like this litter box because it is deep enough to continue messes but still has a lower entry point for the dog to access the box.  It may not solve the problem for a male dog needing to pee against something but the higher walls will make this easier to clean and will contain more of the mess. you will need to plan on using puppy pads with this and changing them often because there is no grid to protect the dog’s feet from any moisture or waste on the pad. We like the choice of sizes that allow this to be used in crates with different orientations (entry on end or on the side).

This is one of the best dog litterboxes with enclosed sides we’ve come across with clips to hold pee pads on the sides for male dogs. It does not have a grid on the bottom, so once the pee pad has been used by the dog his feet will get wet if he goes in to use it again. But for male dogs that lift that leg, this litter box is brilliant.

This interesting concept is essentially a tent with nylon sides, a metal frame and a plastic tray below for puppy pads, grass pads, or litter. We like the add-ons that are available for it such as the three-sided hard plastic walls that can be used with male dogs that need to pee against something but it is a little bit flimsy and not all dogs are going to want to go into a structure to relieve themselves.   the problem with this structure is that any dog waste ends up on the side of it will end up on the floor unless you purchase the wall guard. It’s definitely not suitable for medium to large sized dogs.

This is a great indoor potty solution in theory, but it has some weak points. We do like that the grid keeps the dog’s feet off of the wet pads and keeps the pads from getting pushed all over the floor. It just may not be suitable for all dogs and this is definitely a trial and error one.  We are a big fan of the snap-on function that keeps the unit from being separated by an overzealous dog. It’s not suitable for solid dog waste as this can get lodged in the squares and be extremely difficult to clean up not caught in time. A dog’s claw can get stuck in the grid and it may be uncomfortable for them to walk on.

This is an excellent design concept and we like that the urine doesn’t stand and is collected into the receptacle filled with powder and it turns it into silica. There are some definite flaws with this product. The grass is not the best quality, does not drain effectively and will retain odors over time.  The rubber base of the grass breaks down quickly with pet urine. For smaller dogs with a smaller volume of pet waste this isn’t an issue but for larger dogs, this product definitely will not stand up to. The clips are weak and will not hold the grass mat on securely if the dog moves around a lot while relieving himself.  For the price of the unit and the price of the products needed to keep using it effectively, we would’ve liked to see better quality components included.

We like this unit because the mesh holes are smaller and less prone to snag a dog’s claw. This unit is big enough to accommodate multiple puppy pads be used by larger dogs. Solid waste could get caught in the grid. We would like this unit a lot better if there were clips holding the entire thing together because too much movement could easily separate the unit. This is a good solution for large litters of small puppies.

This is a poorly designed turf pad style solution. This one is comprised of a flat plastic tray, a porous tray with little plastic spikes on it and a synthetic grass layer. Because there are no clips holding the synthetic grass in place (just the spikes on the porous tray) the whole thing comes apart very easily. The two top layers are actually not even very porous and the lip around the bottom tray barely holds the in any liquid.  We cannot recommend this for anything bigger than a toy size dog.

This is one of the better designs we’ve seen for a  puppy pad grid style litter box. It has high sides. It is fairly lightweight which means that it can slide around easily so it may need to be placed against the wall or a rubber mat placed underneath it. Some dogs may catch their claws in the grid. It can be easily cleaned.  This solution is best for small dogs.

When you’re visiting friends, traveling, or experiencing an emergency this is an excellent solution for an animal that is already trained to use a box with litter. This is a small box and best suited for very small dog breeds.  It’s probably not going to work for a male dog as the sides are not very high and cleaning up accidents that may happen on the side of/ outside the box could be inconvenient.

We’ve seen the LitterMaid box in action with cats and this box is definitely designed for their behavior and potty habits.  Use of this box would necessitate a lot of training with your dog and it will not be appropriate for a larger breed. The grooves and moving parts on this box will be very difficult to clean if you have a male dog or a dog that doesn’t relieve himself straight down into the middle of the box.  Dog waste may be sized too large for this box. Due to the high expense of initial purchase and then the need to replace receptacles every week we do not recommend this box for dogs.

This indoor dog potty solution is better than many of the grid style products. We like the anti-slip rubber feet. However, it does have a few drawbacks. It is a smaller size, but the grid clicks into the base to keep it from getting separated. The grid is a little softer on the dog’s paws but dogs with claws that are clipped to get them caught in it. This is a great size for smaller dogs or puppies.

This expensive solution is definitely not appropriate for most dogs. It’s a bowl containing washable plastic granules that flush into your sewer system and then has a drying cycle. This can be configured to drain into your toilet or in the laundry room, into the washing machine drain pipe. You will be constantly flushing your toilet and drains. The mechanical scoop that comes through the litter after the animal has used this frequently misses solid animal waste. Unfortunately, the cleaning cycle pulls a lot of the litter into the grinder and into your sewer system. The grinder that supposedly liquefies solid waste releases the odors of this waste into the air. The inside of both the bowl, the self-contained grinding part, and the pipes will soon become extremely dirty and gross. There are just too many places for pet waste to accumulate and this is very difficult to take apart and put back together when this happens. If this wasn’t a big enough problem, the cleaning cycle lasts over half an hour.

This puppy pad tray started out with good intentions but it has some pretty major design flaws. The hinge in the middle is poorly engineered, allowing the tray to leak and creating a bulge that prevents it from sitting flat on the floor. The moisture from the puppy pads can flow underneath the grooves that hold the pad in place and create buildup. This is difficult to clean particularly in the crevices of the hinge in the center of the tray. There is no grid protecting the dog’s feet from the moisture of the pad once it has been used. While we like that the tray can be folded up against a wall for a male dog to use,  the other flaws make this a less than ideal choice.

This is another potty solution with a great idea but poor execution. It is essentially a long roll of puppy pad that gets rolled up as it is used. Unfortunately, it is useless for a male dog, makes a huge mess with solid dog waste, is not as absorbent as standard puppy pads, and is impractical for any dog bigger than a toy size breed. The pad rolls are expensive and difficult to manage if the unit becomes jammed. The pad roll does not encapsulate odors as the manufacturer claims it will and as it rolls up the smell becomes worse over time. The pads can become torn once they are wet requiring a reset and extensive cleaning. Solid waste is either pushed off of the pad or gets clogged up inside the mechanism. The entire thing is made of recycled plastic that is brittle and highly attractive for dogs that like to chew.

This is another potty mat meant for very small female dogs. The grass sheds, easily retains odors, is very difficult to clean, and can be pushed off of top of the unit easily. The tray is shallow, and if you were to purchase this unit we would recommend putting in a trim down puppy pad because it easily spills and leaks. Solid waste and this unit are not compatible as once it gets into the grass and the porous mat is difficult to clean out.

For little dogs, this puppy pad grid system can be an effective way to secure the pad and keep the dog’s feet dry. It has a removable column and back wall for a male dog to pee against. While it’s best for a small dog, it is still a great solution and one of our favorite grid systems. We wish there were walls on 3 sides instead of just 1, and that there were clamps to hold the grid in place but for a puppy pad grid system this is one of our favorites.

This is a great solution if you want to avoid confusing your dog about where it is acceptable to relieve himself. This is essentially a patch of hydroponically grown grass in a waterproof cardboard box. There is no wall for a male dog to pee against. These last about two weeks depending on how often your dog uses it. Because it is hydroponically grown bugs and insects are not a concern. Solid waste will still need to be scooped, and the grass will need to be watered daily. The box is made of waxed cardboard so may also need additional protection below it such as a plastic tray. These are not suitable for dogs bigger than 25 pounds.

This potty solution is another synthetic turf grass over a tray design. Not only does this one not have a layer between the synthetic grass and the tray, but there are also no clips or any way of holding the grass into the tray. The tray with drawer option channels the urine down through the tray into a drawer that can then be emptied, lessening the amount of urine that the grass sits in. This is still a flawed product and will be difficult to clean. The grass sheds and retains odors. this product might be more usable with a potty pad below the grass, but does not resolve the problem of the grass sitting in the urine after the dog has used it.

This potty solution relies on the use of chemical attractants to train a dog to use it. The woven mesh pad holds onto solid dog waste and is almost impossible to clean once it becomes soiled. It holds on to odor and is dangerous for a dog that might chew it up and therefore cannot be used without supervision. The lid does not stay on it easily, and the reservoir for urine is also difficult to clean if it gets clogged. The green mesh mat can be moved out of the tray as it is not fixed in or held in by clips. The tray drains with one small opening and if this clogs and tray does not adequately drain, the mesh will be floating in urine. Containing the urine in a sealed reservoir is a good idea, but you will never be able to get it fully clean.

This is an excellent puppy pad style litter solution. We are a big fan of the sturdy plastic construction, high sidewalls, and the large back wall that can be removed for male dogs to be against. The grid is also sturdy with multiple support columns below it keeping it from wobbling which is good for nervous dogs. And it’s held in place with a clip that will prevent it from coming off the unit and keep the puppy pads securely inside. The nonskid pads on the bottom of the unit are a thoughtful touch.

How to Choose a Dog Litter Box

Consider carefully your surroundings and how your dog will be trained. If you are in a very small space such as an apartment and your dog will need an indoor potty solution you will want to choose a solution that protects nearby furniture and floor surfaces. Some turf-pad style litter solutions can be used in tandem with enclosed litter boxes or puppy pads if this is a concern. Larger dogs will generally not want or be able to utilize small enclosed litter boxes so you will want to consider a turf pad style solution for them. Most of these are not suitable for solid dog waste and if your dog has loose stools or a runny butt, will be extremely difficult to keep clean.

We’ve narrowed our reviews into several categories for dog litter box solutions:

Turf Pad Style: Faux or real grass pad with a tray below to collect urine

  • These are extremely popular for all dog sizes and can be used indoors or outdoors
  •  Can be combined with a large enclosure
  • Can be used for large or small dogs.

Puppy Pad Tray Style: A tray with or without an enclosure for puppy pads

  • May include a grid above pads to keep feet dry.
  • Will need a supply of puppy pads changed out daily
  • Easier to clean

Litter Box Style: Similar to the pillow bed, but with raised edges or a nest-style

  • Generally best for smaller dogs
  • May require extensive training to teach a dog to use
  • Many dogs do not like traditional litter boxes

Turf pad style solutions can be difficult to clean if loose dog poop gets into the grass and dries. They are generally best for potty use only and will likely need to be replaced frequently because they retain odors. Buying fresh grass pads is an easier solution but also will retain more of the dog’s waste. Faux grass and real grass alike can shed and end up outside of the pad. Most turf solutions will need to be modified for male dogs with a plastic wall for them to pee against. Artificial turf solutions will typically retain odors far more than real grass.

Puppy pad tray style solutions are easier to keep clean but not very environmentally friendly. With proper use, you will use fresh pads every day. The puppy pad tray should have a tray deep enough to not spill out and should not have seams or hinged points where any liquid waste can spill out. We like pad tray solutions such as the Luckyyan Indoor Dog Training Potty that have high sides, a grid to protect the dog’s feet from a soiled pad, and options for male dogs to pee against.

The classic litter box solution is not as attractive to dogs as it is to cats, and due to the size and mechanics of these solutions, they are best for smaller dog breeds. Dogs do not always cover the same way cats do and the litter can be easily tracked out of the box and around. Male dogs may want to pee against something and might miss the box entirely. Automatic litter solutions are not generally appropriate for solid dog waste.
