Does your dog spend a lot of time in his crate, such as when you are away from home? Some dogs like to sleep in their crates even when their pet parents are home because they like a den and cozy place to get away from everything. Comfort and safety are key to choosing a good dog crate pad.

We love this chew-proof pad because it addresses the issues most owners have with their power chewers- they ruffle up a bed, get to the edges and begin shredding, chewing, and tearing. Before you know it (or get home from work) it’s in pieces and you’re panicking worrying how much of it they ate.
This bed has armored edges so it has all the appeal and durability of the famous cot style bed but can be slipped into a dog crate to keep your pup off the cold base of it. The padding is nice. Cleanup can be done with spot cleaning or rinsing it off with a hose but the edges look like over time if the dog has peed in it, there might be a little accumulation but a brush could likely get it out.

We love the soft plush material on the top of this bed and that it can be easily washed. It washes well and does not pill. The simple construction has minimal seams and weak points. Unfortunately, the material is not very strong and won’t hold up to a destructive dog.

The quilting on this bed is attractive and helps hold the padding in place. We like the soft fabric and non-skid bottom. Unfortunately, the pad isn’t as thick and plushy as shown in the images. Some dogs may be attracted to chew on the little nubs on the non-skid fabric on the back of this bed. It is easily washed and dried. As long as you don’t have a dog that enjoys chewing beds, is a great option.

We like the shape of these odor control dog crate pads because the notches in the corners allow for it to fit any size of crate even the ones that have odd shapes in the tray or protrusions in the bottom. While we appreciate that the mesh is breathable this could snag the claws of some pups and may collect fur and detritus more than a less porous fabric on the top. It is easily washable and infused with charcoal to help absorb the odors from your dog’s sweat.

Microfiber velour eggcrate foam |

small (24 x 18 x 2) medium (30 x 21 x 2) large (42 x 28 x 2) |
COLOR CHOICES | 2 |
This is a great crate pad for dogs that may need a little more support. Consider though that there are compromises with using a foam crate pad that may be more absorbent and not as easy to clean. If your dog frequently has accidents you will need to invest in a water-resistant cover to put over this pad. While the zip-off cover is machine washable it will not block moisture from reaching the foam interior and this might be difficult to clean and get odors out of. It is a well-made bed that will hold up well as long as your dog does not like to chew up his bed. While it’s rated as “orthopedic foam” it is egg crate foam.

We like the simplicity of this design and the wide range of sizes available but the materials leave a lot to be desired. This crate pad does not hold up as well in the wash as we would like, has very little padding, does not have a non-skid bottom, and has weak seams that can come apart easily with scratching. The smaller size options are inexpensive and could be a good choice for a smaller dog that does not chew or scratch.

This is a great crate pad for all sizes of dogs. It can be thrown in the washer and dryer and holds up pretty well. The reverse side with piping, seams, and bolsters may be attractive to dogs that like to chew but if this is not an issue for your dog, this is a soft, low maintenance solution to keep him cozy in his crate. The furry bolster discourages the dog from trying to flip this one over or push it around inside the crate and many dogs are comforted by something to snuggle up against.

This crate pad comes in 6 sizes. We like the simple design, the soft material, and the lack of extra trim and other things that encourage dogs to chew. This one held up okay in the wash but the seams don’t hold up well with dogs that like to scratch and push their crate pad around. It does flatten out fairly easily and the material is relatively thin. For the price it’s a decent crate pad but may not hold up long-term.

This is a nice crate pad that comes in lots of sizes. We like the idea of breathable mesh and antimicrobial materials but this one cannot be machine washed and the mesh may snag on dogs’ claws. It has a handle on it sewn into the border of the pad that might encourage inappropriate chewing. We’d like it a lot more if it could be machine washed.

COLOR CHOICES | 2 |
This material starts off absorbent and water resistant but over time in the wash starts to break down. It’s basically a cut-to-size washable puppy pad. It could be a great solution when used in conjunction with another pad as it offers no support. We do like that it’s made in the USA and can be cut to fit. This is also a great product to put down near water and food bowls.

This is an attractive looking bed but has a lot of flaws. The Teflon side of the bed is not comfortable and most dogs will not sleep on it. It is not waterproof and the foam inside is highly absorbent but cannot be cleaned. The zipper to remove the cover is only on one end of the bed so putting it back together is an adventure. If you don’t have an accident-prone or chew-happy dog this bed may work for you.

These are reusable puppy pads designed for use in dog crates. They are well made and we are a big fan of the rubberized grips below to keep them from sliding around. Unfortunately, the rubber nubs are irresistible to dogs that like to chew. These do absorb a fair amount of liquid but should be changed as soon as they are soiled.

While this dog crate pad is listed as tough and chew-resistant, it is not chew-proof and anxious or chew-happy dogs will be able to rip it wide open. The zipper is the weak point. That being said, this is thick, high quality foam and it will be comfortable and give more support than polyfill dog crate pads that go flat quickly. We do like the sturdy nylon material that’s waterproof. If your dog likes softer surfaces you might be able to combine this with blankets for support and coziness.

This crarte pad features 4-inch thick CERTIPUR memory foam which is also used in human beds. The soft plushy cover of this dog crate pad is lined with TPU coating for comfort and waterproof protection. While we love that feature it can also lock moisture and dampness inside the pad, so we recommend checking it frequently to ensure mildew does not form. It has a cheap zipper. We love how soft and supportive this bed is but the cover is the weak point. We’d recommend getting a secondary cover if your dog likes to scratch and ruffle his bed.

How to Choose a Dog Crate Pad
Consider the needs of your dog. Is he still housetraining or does he have health issues that cause him to have accidents in his crate? Is he anxious and nervous about being left alone in his crate? You want to be sure that the pad fits the inside of the crate, will hold up to his claws (especially if he likes to scratch and ruffle his bedding before lying down for a nap!) and that it is not made of anything toxic in the event he chews it up while in the crate. Dogs with separation anxiety should not be crated with toys, pads, or blankets as they will almost always destroy them.
Even if your dog is not overly destructive you will still want to find a crate pad that will hold up over time but is still comfortable. Most crates are hard with metal or plastic floors or even grates. Enhancing the crate with a pad will help your dog stay warmer in cooler temperatures and help him feel cozy and safe.
Our categories for dog crate pads include:
Mat Style– flat with less padding, tufting, bolsters
- Offer less support
- Usually less absorbent
Bed Style- Usually have more substantial padding and cushioning, or bolsters
- Can be more absorbent and require frequent cleaning
- Usually less durable and easier for dog to chew and destroy
Cushion Style- Between the bed and mat style, no bolsters, light padding
- Usually comes in more sizes to fit more crate types and sizes
- Often more difficult to destroy
Finding the right dog crate pad will likely be a trial and error process as you find out what works best for you and your dog. There are compromises to be made here- Cheaper crate pads that you can throw in the wash all at once will often have little to no support for your dog but thicker pads will often be more absorbent and harder to keep clean.
In a confined space your dog will sweat, pant, and sometimes have accidents. It’s important that you are able to keep his crate pad clean and sanitary. In warmer weather, it’s important to have a crate pad that is not going to make your dog warmer, and many of the crate pads on the market today are synthetic fleece, velour or sherpa and these materials can make your dog hot and sweaty.
You may find that the best solution is a combination of products such as a washable absorbent pad with a softer bed on top of it or a thick supportive foam mattress with a reinforced cover to protect it.
