Our Review

The Prima Pets Bowl comes in a variety of different colors and 2 different sizes. Both fold down small for travel, so you can take them with you in the car, on the trails, or tuck it away for an emergency. The bowl is wide enough and deep enough for larger dogs (provided you choose the larger size), but it folds up small enough that it won’t impede you on longer hikes or camping trips. The bright colors make it easy to choose a personalized option for your dog. You can even purchase them in packs of 2 so you have a bowl for food and water when you need it. The silicone is of good quality, but the folding points can be weak and can tear after extended use.

These collapsible silicone bowls by Mr. Peanut come in packs of three. Each bowl holds between 1.5 and 3 cups, depending on the size option you choose. Keep in mind that the colors that are advertised won’t necessarily be the same you get, so if you’re looking for those specific colors you may be disappointed. These bowls are 0.5” inches wide when collapsed and over 6 inches tall when fully extended. They may collapse easily, especially if your dog is an exuberant eater. Each cup comes with its carabiner clip to attach to your dog’s collar or your backpack. The color of the carabiner matches the cup. The silicone is food-grade and is easy to clean and store for your next adventure, wherever it may be!

Our Review

The Kurgo Zippy Bowl is extremely durable and portable, with a zipper feature that allows it to become smaller than ever when you aren’t using it. The small triangle it zips down into attaches to your pack, your dog’s collar, or any other clip with the included carabiner. The loop where the carabiner rests may be a bit weak but lasts longer if you are careful with it. It’s a watertight bowl that is made of nylon, but it can be used for food or water. Keep it in an easy-to-reach location on those long hikes so that your dog can have water easily. The size of the expanded bowl is not ideal for large dogs, however – it may not be large enough for them to get their noses inside.

The Ruffwear Quencher Cinch Bowl is a dog feeder or water bowl that doubles as storage. You can keep your dog’s kibble in this pouch when it’s not in use. The cinching top will keep it safe and prevent spills. When it’s time to eat, simply untie the strings and it doubles as a convenient bowl. On the other hand, you can also collapse this bowl entirely and keep it in your pack (or attached to a clip). The waterproof nylon/polyester blend is waterproof, so this bowl works for both food and water. It’s extremely light and folds down small when not in use. Also, there are two different size options so you can choose the best for your dog. There are also 3 color options so you can choose the one you’ll be most likely to spot on your adventures.

The BarkBowl by Ruff Products comes in a few different size options, as well as 5 different vibrant color options. This eco-friendly silicone dog bowl folds down small and is extremely lightweight, but it’s much larger than the standard collapsible bowl. This makes it ideal for larger dogs or dogs with wider or flat faces. It comes with an aircraft-grade carabiner that isn’t going to bend or snap off any time soon. The best part is that this collapsible bowl is heat and cold resistant. You can use it in extreme temperatures without worrying about it becoming damaged, as the thresholds for damage are very high. The silicone may be a bit weak at the folding points, but overall this collapsible bowl is a solid, constant companion for your adventures.

Our Review

The Port-a-Bowl by Outward Hound is another bowl made of durable nylon with a wide base to hold food or water. The only downside to this bowl is that there is no size option. One size is meant for all breeds, which may not be possible with extremely large dogs or dogs with flat faces. When you aren’t using it, you can fold it down extremely small and use a clip to attach it to your bag. While it isn’t suitable for use as your dog’s everyday bowl (or for long periods, as it may leak). However, it dries fast after quick water breaks so you can fold it right back up and keep the walk going. It’s a durable bag that you can use for food as well as for water.

Kurgo’s silicone collapsible dog bowl is made of food-grade silicone. It has a rigid bottom that won’t collapse under the pressure of your dog drinking. The diameter of the cup is wide enough that your largest dogs will be able to get a drink. The cup is perfect for long hikes, camping trips, and other adventures. You can clip it directly to your bag or your dog’s pack so that it’s easy to get to, and it’s easy to store just about anywhere you need. Even if you’re just going on a walk, it can be an amazing way to keep your dog hydrated. There is no ring around the top, so it’s less likely to separate from the rest of the bowl. There are 3 color options for this dishwasher-safe bowl.

The Friends Forever Collapsible Dog Bowl comes in a set of 2, but the bowls are different sizes. While this might work for some, the disparity in the sizes is a little confusing. However, these bowls are good for both food and water, with a waterproof interior that won’t leak or spread. They dry quickly when you’re ready to pack up and go, so you don’t need to worry about getting water on your other gear. It’s easy to clean these and fold them flat when you’re ready to go again, and they are extremely lightweight as well. They don’t have a storage feature, which seems an oversight with a bag-like portable water bowl. However, these bowls are sturdy, and they won’t spill easily while your dog is using them.

This travel set is a bit different from the other collapsible dog bowls on our list. This option comes with a ton of other accessories, including a large bag where you can store all of your dog’s favorite items. This is a great overnight bag or travel bag for your dog. It can be a perfect car camping bag to keep all of your pup’s favorite things together on the go. It even has a mat for the dog bowls and additional food containers for storing kibble and even wet food! This luggage set can be great in situations where you have room to spare, as the bag is pretty bulky. Still, it can be extremely convenient for keeping all of your dog’s gear together no matter where you’re going.

Ruffwear’s Bivy Dog Bowl is great for hikes or backpacking, as it is extremely lightweight and folds down to a very small size. Its single-walled construction makes it portable while remaining waterproof over short periods. It’s great for food or water, and the reflective trim on the outside also makes it easy to find in the dark. The nylon is extremely durable and won’t rip easily. The only drawback is the hefty cost. The opening also isn’t reinforced, making it easy for your dog to push it closed while they are trying to eat. Still, it dries quickly and cleaning is a breeze if you can get past these minor quirks. There is only one color available, but we’re sure that your dog is going to love this bowl anyway.

The Tuff Pupper Collapsible Dog Bowl comes in three sizes, the largest of which is impossibly large. Still, the bowl folds down quickly and easily to make it easy to store while you’re out. Even the largest dogs deserve food and water on the go, so why settle for smaller bowls that they can barely drink out of? It’s rare to find a collapsible bowl in this size, but Tuff Pupper’s bowl folds down flat and smaller than you’d think it could. This larger size can hold up to 100oz of water or food, but the smaller sizes are great for less. There are also 4 different colors for each of the sizes. This bowl is incredibly sturdy, but it may collapse easily after being folded many times.

LumoLeaf’s Collapsible Dog Travel bowls come in a set of two. The bowls are different sizes, with one holding up to 10 cups of food and the smallest only holding 8. Either of the bowls can be used for food or water, as they are leakproof, dry easily, and are easy to clean. When you’re ready to get back to the adventure, simply fold this bag back up and zip to closed, making a small half-circle carrying option that will easily store just about anywhere. The fabric that these bowls are made of is sturdy and can easily hold up to use while camping, walking, or otherwise traveling. Each of the bowls’ diameter is plenty wide enough for larger dogs, and there is an XL option for your largest friends.

Bonza’s large collapsible bowl is larger than some of the other bowls we’ve seen. It still collapses flat, but there’s enough space for two dogs to get water or food. There’s even an extra-large version for larger breeds. Even your larger pets will have an opportunity to drink or eat! This silicone bowl won’t slip around during use and is made of entirely eco-friendly silicone. The included carabiner clip is sturdy but beware of the separate rim on this bowl. If you tug too hard, the rim can separate from the silicone, rendering this bowl useless. While this bowl is lightweight, it’s also considerably flimsier than some of the other options we’ve looked at. The size is well worth it if you treat the bowl gently.

Leashboss’s Collapsible Dog Bowls can hold a lot of water or kibble, but they have some design flaws that make them less appealing. This package contains 2 bowls, one for food and one for water. The difference in these two bowls is apparent due to the drawstring storage cover on the food bowl. This is a useful addition that makes these bowls unique and great for camping or hiking. However, the water bowl can’t hold that much without collapsing, so smaller sips are best here. They also seem to ship with a strong plastic smell sometimes, which means that your dogs are less likely to drink from them at first. Still, the drawstring closure and large capacity warrant a second glance at these nylon travel bowls.

How to Choose:

A collapsible dog bowl is a simple solution to feeding or hydrating your pet on the go. Whether you’re on a trail, at a campground, or out for a long walk, a collapsible dog bowl can be easy to take with you. Weight is an important measure of quality in an item you may be carrying or packing with you.

When to Use Collapsible Dog Bowls

A collapsible dog bowl can be an asset, but there are definitely times when it’s more appropriate to use them. Let’s take a quick look at some of the times when a collapsible dog bowl might come in handy.

  • Hiking Trips: Whether you’re taking your dog with you on a day hike or a months-long long-distance hike through the mountains, a collapsible bowl can be your dog’s best friend. They are small, fold down easily, and can be convenient to get to. When you need to stop and get a drink, popping open the collapsible bowl to give your buddy a drink as well has never been easier.
  • Camping: We understand the need to save space in your camping gear. Tents, supplies, and firewood take up a lot of room in your car, so why not use something small for your dog’s food or water bowl? They pack away easily, dry quickly, and are easy to clean without a water source around.
  • Long Walks: There’s no reason to drag your dog’s bulky water bowl around with you on a long walk in the park. A collapsible bowl is easy to put in your pocket or clip to your belt, and giving your pup a drink can be important on hot days. Keeping a bowl with you can help keep you both happy, without too much hassle on your part.
  • Travel: Long car rides can be fun for some dogs, but keeping your dog hydrated (and fed, if they’ll eat) is important. It’s easy to pop open the collapsible dog bowl at your next rest stop and let your dog get a drink or a snack before you get back on the road.
  • Emergencies: When there’s an emergency, sometimes having water on hand can be important. That’s why some canine first aid kits include collapsible water bowls. Keeping one on hand wherever your dog goes can help you keep them healthy if you happen to get caught out without another option. While it’s hardly lifesaving, having a collapsible bowl is still beneficial in case of an emergency.

Why is Weight Important?

If you are camping out of your car or using these bowls at home, you may not understand why weight is important. For hikers, campers, and other travelers, however, weight is one of the most important measures when it comes to their gear. Let’s take a look at how weight affects hiking in particular.

Through-hikers often spend days or weeks on the trail without coming back home, and many of them appreciate the constant companionship of their trail dog. However, maintaining a pet with standard pet products can get heavy and unwieldy fast. These hikers often carry everything they need with them, including their trash. Every piece of gear is another pound that they have to carry on their hiking packs, and even the slightest overbalance can make it a miserable trip.

That’s why professional outdoorsmen and long-distance hikers prefer gear that is lightweight and durable. So when it comes to the bowls you’ll use to feed and hydrate your dogs, weight is important. You want the lightest possible bowl that is small, convenient, and won’t hassle you unnecessarily. That’s why many hikers choose collapsible bowls for their dogs.

While car camping and other activities may not require as much thought, a lightweight and portable bowl can do a great deal of good for any dog on a longer camping trip as well. Consider the weight of the collapsible dog bowl you choose before considering any other factor, especially if you plan to go on hikes that last days, weeks, or more.

Things to Look for in a Collapsible Dog Bowl:

Here are some more factors you should consider as you shop for a collapsible dog bowl.

Weight

As we discussed above, the weight of the dog bowl is extremely important. However, your needs may vary. If you aren’t planning on doing any long-distance hikes, you can afford to choose a bowl that weighs a little bit more. If there’s plenty of room in your camping gear for a larger collapsible bowl, weight shouldn’t matter!

But long-term hiking, camping, and backpackers with pets have to consider the weight of all of their gear, collapsible dog bowls included. If this is the case, consider choosing the most lightweight option that is large enough for your dog.

Materials

What the bowl is made of can make a huge difference when it comes to a dog bowl. The most popular and simplest collapsible dog bowls are made of silicone. They aren’t as sturdy as others, but they get the job done and fold down extremely small and flat for travel. Silicone may be flimsy or weak, but there’s no chance that the water is going to spill out unless the silicone rips.

On the other hand, you have nylon or polyester dog ‘bowls’. These bowls look more like bags with a stable, flat bottom, and you can fold them up very small or sometimes use them to store kibble for your next stop. These bags are sturdy for the long haul, but they may take up just a little more space. You also can’t use them for water over long periods, as many will eventually being absorbing water or leaking.

Choose the material that’s right for your dog and the purposes you have in mind, but keep an open mind as you search for a collapsible dog bowl to purchase.

Capacity

Capacity refers to how much the bowl is capable of holding. It’s important to choose a bowl that is large enough for your dog, but not just in size. A larger dog is going to need a larger bowl, and you may just have to frequently refill a smaller bowl for a larger dog.

Size

Because collapsible water bowls are often smaller, it’s important to consider the size of the bowl itself. The dimensions are just as important as weight and capacity. When you have a larger dog, the diameter of the bowl is just as important as some of the other measurements, as larger dogs or dogs with flat faces may not be able to get to the water or food. If you have a larger dog, always choose the largest available bowl for this reason.

Food or Water

Be mindful of whether the bowl can be used with food or water. While most collapsible bowls can be used with both, some won’t’ be water-resistant and may leak or absorb the water that your pour into it. Be aware that bowls that are made for water can also be used for food, but not all food bowls can be used to hold water. If you need a bowl that does both, pay very close attention to whether you can use both with your selected bowl.

Included Carabiner Clip

A carabiner clip allows you to securely fasten gear to your backpack, your dog’s collar, or any other available loop. For a water bowl, this is ideal so the bowl can air-dry before you put it back in a bag. If you are taking the bowl with you on the go, it’s important to be able to clip it to your gear, your dog, or yourself. This way you won’t have to carry it! If this is the intended purpose for your purchase, consider a collapsible bowl that includes a carabiner clip.

Collapsed Size

When you’re trying to save space, every little bit counts. The collapsed size of the bowl can make a big difference, so be sure that you are considering this factor before you make a purchase. If storage space is important in your home or on your adventures, make sure to choose the bowl with the smallest possible collapsed size.
