Best Cat Deterrent

Best Cat Deterrent

We’ll do anything to keep our cats safe, but we’d like our furniture to be in one piece, too. Cat deterrents need to be humane but effective and easy for humans to operate. The PetSafe ScatMat is our winner because it gets results with minimal setup, increasing intensity levels, and a long-lasting battery.

Our Review

The PetSafe ScatMat Electronic Pet Training Mat is a highly effective deterrent that can help train your cat without human supervision. Made from durable nylon and plastic, you can choose between sizes: a strip, medium, large, or sofa, depending on the size of the surface that you are looking to protect. Simply switch the mat on to start or off to preserve the battery, which is designed to last up to six months or for a total of ten thousand activations. When your cat steps on this mat, he will experience a harmless three-second static pulse to startle him away. For those training kittens and new pets, the indicator light will tell you how many times this process occurs. If the lowest level isn’t getting the job done, there are two higher levels of intensity. The mat can be safely used in any area inside a home but should not be used outside. The battery is not included, but if you would prefer to avoid replacing batteries in the future, consider purchasing a separate PetSafe ScatMat Power Adaptor.

Our Review

This deterrent/repellent is designed for outside use. This humane repellant can help guardians keep unfamiliar cats and wildlife away from their yards to ease the territorial anxiety of their own cats. It uses a motion sensor to detect moving objects before triggering ultrasonic alarm sounds and a flashing light to frighten off furry intruders without harming them. Humans and inside pets will in theory not be disturbed, but some pets may still hear it and become agitated. This repellant is also designed to be portable so it can be easily pushed into the ground, hanged from a wall, and even transported on camping trips. This device wins points for convenience with its solar-power capacity and backup rechargeable batteries, all included in the original purchase, unlike some competitors’ products that run on separate disposable batteries. While it’s designed to be waterproof, soaking rains could interfere with its functionality.

Need to keep your cat or maybe the neighbor’s out of your garden? The ScareCrow Motion Activated Animal Repellent can be staked into the ground and humanely deters animals with a combination of sound and a burst of water. The three-second blast of water startles but doesn’t harm and is environmentally friendly by using just three cups of water per burst. The repellant requires no human monitoring because it is motion activated and can detect motion up to 1,200 square feet. The single 9-volt battery is not included and will need to be replaced at least every six months, though users will know when it’s time to change thanks to a low-battery indicator. Be prepared to carefully follow the installation instructions to make sure this repellant gets the job done.

Our Review

Training a cat to stay out of certain areas inside the home? Consider the PetSafe Pawz Away Indoor Pet Barrier, which delivers a harmless but annoying high-pitched tone and a gentle static correction through a lightweight, waterproof receiver collar. The static correction is progressive by starting at the lowest level and increasing to the maximum in three seconds, but for a total of no more than fifteen seconds. The transmitter may be set up to define an invisible barrier that can range from two to twelve feet. While the collar comes with batteries, the transmitter requires three AA batteries which must be purchased separately. The Pawz Away Indoor Pet Barrier is only safe for pets over 5 lbs. and the collar should not be used for more than twelve hours per day. For multi-pet households, one transmitter can be used with multiple collars by purchasing additional collars.

The Trusted Pets Sofa Scram Pet Deterrent Mat is a great training tool to keep cats off furniture and prevent scratching. Pets are deterred when the 85-decibel beep from this mat sounds upon contact. With two sizes to give you the most flexibility, this can be used on sofas, chairs, countertops, beds, near trash cans, and any other areas you don’t want your cat to go. The durable nylon exterior may be cleaned by hand, but is not waterproof, so we would not recommend this mat to discourage territorial marking. Humans can control the Sound Output Switch and Radio Output Switch for their own comfort. There is no battery included and a 9-volt Alkaline Battery will have to be purchased separately.

If you want to avoid the mess of a spray and the complicated assembly of an electronic deterrent, the Homarden Cat Repellent Outdoor Plastic Mat may be a good compromise. This transparent plastic mat is made with a simple concept: a raised surface, similar to spikes, is uncomfortable for paws to walk on, leading to indoor and outdoor pets or outside creatures avoiding the surface it rests upon. This pack of six mats can be laid out together to form a pattern large enough to cover a sofa or a patch of your garden up to 8 feet long and 13 inches wide. These plastic mats can also be trimmed down to target a smaller area. For outdoor use, you’ll want to anchor these down with stakes or staples.

Our Review

The De-Bird Defender Spikes are an easy to configure, inexpensive and humane option for those looking to deter inside cats or outside visitors away from furniture, kitchen countertops, or gardens. There are a total of twenty one-foot strips which can be used separately or snapped together to cover a large surface. These plastic strips form anti-climb spikes that are meant to be uncomfortable for your kitty to walk on without causing him pain. These strips can be glued, stapled, or screwed to a surface, but this will present an added expense. While these spikes might prevent wildlife and cats from walking or sitting where they are installed, they may not actually be an effective deterrent from the rest of the area without completely walling it off for you as well.

Our Review

When you can’t get your cat to stop scratching your furniture or curtains, it’s time to consider something they can’t stand: a sticky texture. Sticky Paws Furniture Strips are constructed from a simple adhesive that can be safely applied to upholstery or other textiles and removed again without damaging it. Made in the USA, these 2” x 12” strips come in a package of twenty-four for customizable coverage and are transparent to avoid sticking out like a sore thumb. They will need to be replaced at least every ten days to maintain adhesion. They are not foolproof on painted or wallpapered surfaces as they can cause peeling. They also won’t work with nonstick surfaces or stain-resistant fabrics, so be careful where these are used. We know that there are some cats who like to chew tape. Be sure to keep an eye on this product for the first few days after implementing it in your home to make sure your cat isn’t trying to show you who’s boss by eating this product.

Our Review

If you don’t want to utilize an electric or physical cat deterrent in your home, consider a spray alternative like the Pet MasterMind Claw Withdraw. This spray is all-natural, containing pleasant-smelling, plant-based ingredients like rosemary, and astragalus in a water base. While you won’t mind the smell, your cat should be repulsed and hopefully avoid a repeat of this experience. Spray a small amount on places for kitty to avoid like countertops and furniture – this spray can be used on fabrics without staining. With no artificial chemicals, this product can be used as often as you’d like and comes in two sizes for you to choose from, depending on the frequency that you’ll need. Be advised that the scent doesn’t last long and you’ll need repeat applications. Olfactory deterrents are not effective on all cats, so this is a trial and error product.

The Stelucca Amazing Shields Furniture Protectors may prevent cats from going to town with their claws on your furniture or other upholstered and carpeted surfaces. These thick vinyl shields are transparent so they won’t clash with your decor. They’re flat and can be cut into a variety of shapes and sizes for customization. Each package contains six extra-large protectors designed to be flexible enough to cover larger contoured areas like sofas. Installation is easy with self-adhesive sheets and included twist pins for extra stability, though sometimes an ambitious scratcher can dislodge these sheets, even when screwed on. Don’t leave these protectors on furniture for more than three months at a time to prevent damage.

Our Review

Do you like the convenience of a spray but can’t monitor your indoor cat every minute? The PetSafe SSSCAT Deterrent Spray is motion-activated so your kitty won’t be able to sneak past your defenses. The infrared can monitor movement up to three feet away where it will emit a safe, odorless spray to scare your cat off a countertop or off-limits area. The spray will not stain upholstery, and the nozzle is adjustable for more precise angling. You will need to purchase four AA batteries separately and replace them throughout the life of the product. Kittens and small cats might be too small to trigger the motion detection sensor, and humans might find themselves in the line of fire if they get too close.

How to Choose:

Keeping a persistent cat off the counter or furniture (or anywhere else he wants to go) can be a frustrating endeavor. Before you go broke consulting your veterinarian or hiring a professional animal behaviorist, consider using a cat deterrent. These products are designed to reduce or preferably stop undesirable feline behavior.

Consider the behavior you are trying to stop before looking for the right deterrent.

Who do you want to deter, and where from? Your own kitty destroying furniture or is there a stray or neighbor’s cat who sneaks into your yard and pees all over your porch?

Some products are designed to stop furniture scratching, others to prevent jumping on counters, and some are meant to work outside to stop cats from entering a yard or garden. Outdoor products need to cover a wider range of territory, while countertops and sofas need only a small amount of coverage but also must be protected from damage.

In addition to being effective at stopping a problematic behavior, a deterrent also needs to be worth your investment. Look for something that is durable, long-lasting, and preferably doesn’t require frequent maintenance. Some deterrents need to be plugged into an electrical outlet or require batteries that will have to be purchased separately.

The Most Common Cat Deterrents:

There are three types of pet deterrent, depending on your needs and budget:

Chemical/Olfactory Deterrent:

Cats are creatures of delicate sensibilities and are estimated to have a sense of smell fourteen times stronger than humans. This can be a blessing or a curse for our furry friends. With such effective noses, they are more susceptible to offensive odors that they will want to avoid.

Many cat deterrents are simple liquid sprays that are harmless but contain scents designed to drive away cats. Some stronger sprays are weather-resistant and can be used outside to scare off neighborhood cats. Others contain more gentle and naturally occurring aromas that can be sprayed safely in a home without overwhelming humans with the odor.

If you are looking for a spray for furniture or drapes, make sure the product won’t stain upholstery with repeated application. You can always spot test a fabric or surface before applying fully. For best results using most olfactory deterrents, spray the off-limits area three to four times daily for the first two weeks, and then lessen the frequency as your cat learns to avoid the spot.

Electronic Deterrent:

Whether you are tech-savvy or just looking for a way to keep your cat in line while you’re otherwise occupied, an electronic deterrent is a solid choice. These deterrents cost more than sprays and physical deterrents, but often prove to be the most effective training method. Electronic deterrents require either access to electricity or batteries to operate and are almost always motion detectors. These products can cover a range of territory either inside or outside.

For outside coverage, consider an ultrasonic deterrent. These are triggered by motion and produce an ultrasonic alarm sound that can’t be detected by humans but frightens off animals with no permanent harm caused. Some also utilize flashing lights or a spray of water as an extra level of protection.

For inside cats, there are products that similarly emit a harmless sound or a brief static emission at the touch of a paw, causing cats to scatter. These are simple mats designed to cover furniture and often come in different sizes depending on how large the area in question is. If you need more targeted coverage, consider a wireless collar that communicates with a transmitter when your cat gets into a place where he shouldn’t be. These electronic deterrents all work well for multiple cat households, too.

Physical Deterrent:

If you want your cat to be discouraged from bad behavior even when you’re not around but aren’t up for the hassle of a high-tech deterrent, consider the middle ground. A physical deterrent requires little assembly, no monitoring, and often is the most affordable choice. Cats are sensitive to textures and won’t enjoy uncomfortable feelings on their paws.

Surfaces containing plastic grooves and spikes are not harmful but will still chase felines away. For furniture vulnerable to scratching, vinyl sheets can be applied to keep cat claws from doing damage. These physical deterrents need only be placed once and left alone in the spot being protected, whether inside or outside. Similarly, sticky surfaces like adhesives will lead to kitty avoiding another exposure. Adhesives meant to deter pets are specially formulated to be placed on furniture without causing damage to fabrics like other types of tape would.
